think it's a system like HL2 where you need to be online to activate/run it.
Yeah I think if you buy it through Steam you could re-install it indefinitely because of Steam. And I am with Sereifex, I despise those stupid anti-piracy sa***uards because the punish the legit guys who buy them. Which in turn makes people like me who do buy them to go and find *****s to get rid of crap like that.
I remember when Battlefield required you to have the CD in tray in order to play....which was stupid as **** because you only played it online anyways which in turned required authorization in order to play it anyways! Not to mention starting up the game was slower because it kept checking the stupid CD before it loaded. A ***** got rid of that and it cut my load time down by half which was huge when you were playing on less than a gig of RAM.
TBH they just need to give up the anti-piracy thing with all the copy protection crap because it just doesn't work. It's an arms race and like all arms races, no one wins.
OK, mini-rant over with lol. When I installed the demo and start to play it my mouse is invisible and I can hear the game just fine and I can see the fire but I see all these yellow squares floating around instead of anything else. Maybe it's my drivers I don't know.

Edited by: Reiisha on 23/08/2007 20:19:51 I just got it. So far, i'm not regretting it... I hope it lasts a good 15+ hours at least, not the kind of wishy washy incredibly short stuff like Prey or similar.
Also, i'd not advise to buy this game if you're not prepared to deal with some installation issues. ATM you can only activate it on 2 different machines - And uninstallation reputedly does not clear up a licensed activation. At the moment, the retail version can be installed only twice, and if you lose your Steam version through a crash, you've lost 1 of your 2 installations there too.
At the moment it's a risky buy, and i'll be looking for a ***** to get around the activation issues myself to be safe.
edit:
I'm running a Core 2 Duo E6550, 2GB 800MHz DDR2 and a GeForce 8600GT. The game runs fine at 1024x768 at max settings, although barely (30-35+ fps, maybe a bit more. but not less). Should be safe to run for most people :)

If anyone hadnt guessed, im a bit cheesed at them. How dare they install this stuff on my Pc without prior permission and notice. Its not in the EULA. Its kinda useless as theres a pirate copy on torrent already. really hope they remove this stupid nosense and let me go buy the game i want to play without being treated like a criminal.. only ones wining so far are pirates.
That's it! I'm downloading it illegally to bypass all that ****. They had their chance, but they have made me too scared to pay for their game. So **** them right up the ass.

Would you forgive me if I said that your decision was financially motivated? You probably just wanted it for free anyway, unless this is your idea of meting out some capitalist justice.
If you really wanted to be fair-and-square ethically, you'd buy the game, so the developers get something for their work, and then you'd download the pirated version, so you can play the game you want.
Are you telling me the developers deserve to lose some hard-earned money just based on one mistaken decision concerning copyright fraud? They probably didn't make the decision anyway, it could have been the publishers or an exec. Who knows?
I think you're behaving like a freeloading parasite. If you value their work, your integrity, and the gaming industry in general, you won't use pirated software without paying for the game. But do what you want. I can't stop you. Just drop the righteous indignation bullcrap as a reason not for paying them to use their product. |

Not really, the game companies are going to far in their zealous attempt to prevent copying of their products. The only way they will ever learn is through failure. If I paid for the game and then illegally downloaded it that wouldn't get the message across now, would it? As for the devs, I don't like robbing them of success like this but it's their fault for working for a company that is run by people who are so inept that they don't realise that these precautions actually increase internet piracy.
I actually preordered this game on Amazon, but I quickly cancelled that once reading the last few posts in this thread. If I'm going to be punished for legitimately buying a game then it's not my fault. I shall ilegally download it because I know that there will be no neo-criminal 'anti-piracy' viruses waiting to infect my computer.

Not 100% sure on this but this sounds like what happens when your video card does not support Shader Model 3 (SM3). I have read a lot of complaints from x800 card owners (apparently a lot of them) and this sounds like what they experience and this is due to the x800 card not supporting SM3 (only supports SM2).
There is no fix for this save buying a new video card. I think pretty much everything on the market today should support SM3 but I'd double check to be sure before spending money on it.

So you're saying that your chosen response is the only one that will get through to them? Have you seen the 2K forums? There is a sticky at the very top of their BioShock general forums created by the community manager to discuss the issue. The same thread contains links to pirated versions of the game free for download on torrent sites (already ahead of UK release, mind you). It had to be created because the forums were clogged by similar threeds. Both PCG UK and US have published web articles criticizing the decision to use secuROM.
What I'm saying is that they're probably already wise. They know that they've messed up big time. They've certainly alienated their hard-core fanbase. Also, there are other ways for you to get the message across to whom it may concern. You could write them a letter. You could write them angry e-mails every day. You could create an online petition. You can do all these things, and still pay for the game, but use a pirated version that's free of a rootkit. But no, you decided to choose an option that involves you playing the game for free, effectively stealing their work.
I have nothing more to add. I'm just calling BS on your ethics. But it'll be interesting to see how the general secuROM issues plays through in the following months. |

Oh come on, no they won't say "Daku stole our game, let's change tactics!" but hopefully I won't be the only one and they will say "well...a lot of people stole our game, the irony would be funny if my boss wasn't firing me for being incompetant".
So what if they are already aware of the damage they have inflicted upon themselves? I won't stop until they cease these foolish schemes. When I spend my money on a game, I expect it to play no matter how many times I've installed it, and I certainly don't want any surprises. This is like hiring a hooker that specialises in giving her customers aids...
So there we have it. I'm simply doing this to gain something without being 'hurt' in any way, if the game was free of that ****e then I would gladly pay for it. But this game, as well as many others has been poorly designed, and I will not reward people for trying to screw me over.

SecuROM does NOT use a rootkit in its implementation. If you have one it came from somewhere else. Granted, like many other people, I am not thrilled with the whole SecuROM thing but they are falling over themselves to say rootkits have no part in their software.

Yeah...you and a few thousand other people it seems.
SecuROM seems to get ****y if certain things are running on your PC. In particular I have seen reports that AVG needs to be stopped or entirely removed (unacceptable of course and may have been resolved with an update...I have AVG and all runs fine but many report this). Daemon Tools seems to **** it off and even some legitimate Microsoft tools such as Process Explorer screws it up.
Of course there may be many more I am unaware of and I am in complete agreement that including SecuROM was a HUGE mistake on 2Ks part. Legitimate buyers are getting hosed in droves. Pirates got around it before it was even officially for sale. Who knows how much 2K had to pay SecuROM for use of this software? Now people are returning their games or avoiding buying it and many are turning to pirated versions as an option. While the pirates were fine all along. I'd wager 2K has lost a good deal more money over all of this than they have saved because SecuROM foiled a would-be pirate.
I appreciate their desire to protect their work and make a profit from it but I cannot see how this helps at all.

Awesome about the tool/increase.
Rootkit Revealer revealed the SecuROM rootkit on my fresh, new PC... Hate to burst your bubble, but Bioshock *does* install a SecuROM rootkit.

So far it's good, the graphics are very stylish, so far havent gotten to the bits that seem to have got the reviewers into gobsmacked mode but it's a very enjoyable game

You need to read up more on what a rootkit actually is. What SecuROM is installing is not a rootkit. Rootkit Revealer spots the registry entry from SecuROM as a possible rootkit because of the asterisk at the end but it is still not a rootkit.

my pc so wont run this

but then, I've had it a god 4 years, so it's done well. ram and gfx have been upgraded since I bought it, but not the processor.

Get a new PC :P
I'm betting the 7600 is also agp...
Anyway, i just finished the game. No spoilers from me, don't worry :)
FYI: For the entire game i ran it on 1024x768, on max detail (Windows XP though, so DX9 only). It ran at a nice and constant 25-30+ fps, with very, very few hitches here and there where it got a bit below 20.
Specs: Core 2 Duo E6550, 2GB DDR2 800, GF 8600GT. Nothing too fancy. Also: I did not update my vid drivers as was instructed - I didn't need them. Didn't want to install them either since they weren't on the NVidia page. The game works fine without them.
