Got 20 minutes until it downloads, I so freaking hope it's gonna be worth the wait.
Gamers hell seem to have the fastest DL speed atm, currently cruising at a reasonable 12mb/ps.

Just played it and it runs amazingly well . It runs smoothly on my amd 3200, 1 gog o' ram, 8600gtx (win xp), that was at 1200x1024 with all settings at full, getting an average FPS of 30+.
The demo is short and pretty damn good. I'm suprised at how tense the atmosphere is, the intro is kinda like a more emersive, horror(ish) halflife.
It's well worth a bash if you're into FPS, survival horror affairs. I thinks it's something like that anyhoo's
I think I shall purchase game on friday if i can find it for ú20.
Great news. I'm downloading the demo right now. I have some high expectations. |

Barring spoilers, get it. Get it now.
No buts, just get it.

Just had 5 mins on it but not playing it any more. I hate playing through what I've already done only a day or 2 later.
It was very nice. __________________________________

I'm about to play it, got all my snacks and everything ready. Thank god for Steam. I'm so excited. Shock 2 was my favourite game of all time and finally it has a spiritual successor.
Will edit post with feedback on the demo. |

No kidding. Played the demo and I have to say it is the scariest game I have ever played. Just downright disturbing (in a cool way). The comments from the residents, the mother and her baby, the Slicer after the Little Sister to name a few notable moments (and trust me those are not really spoilers...you have to experience it).
The place oozed atmosphere and really does an impressive job drawing you in. Game is due for delivery here in a few hours. Looking forward to it.

Amazingly enough , Bioshock runs on my woefully inadequate PC. However , I can't get past the starting area due to it being pitch black (save for the fires and water effects) and ugly rendering bugs blocking my view half of the time. I tried to move close to a red light thingy but it does nothing special. Help ?

*edit* oh , and I have no mouse pointer in menus , rather annoying.
All I can suggest is the latest drivers (Bioshock told me my latest driver was problematic and pointed me to a beta driver of all things).
I'd also go into the settings and lower the resolution and turn off all effects you can. Adjust the gamma/brightness as well here. See how that goes then turn on effects as you like for best experience while remaining playable.

Well , there is no new driver for my integrated chipset video cards unfortunately I started the game on lowest settings , tried to adjust gamma as well - but all it does is change the empty black background into a dark grey one it seems that my PC refuses to render anything besides the fire , smoke and water effects. There was no noticeable slowdown when I switched settings to highest details - the water effects look prettier , but the rest still seems... missing

What video card do you have? Bioshock does NOT support Shader Model 2.0 (uses SM 3.0) so an older card that cannot handle SM3 is SOL looks like.

Originally by: Imperator Jora'h Upon further reading your problems sound exactly like those described by people with x800 video cards (they do not support SM3). There apparently is not fix for this except a new graphics card. Note I am not saying this is why your game will not run...just a possible suggestion.
Thanks , that must be it. Trying to bend minimum system requirements doesn't always work , even when the game doesn't crash
Thing is , I have the required 1 GB of RAM , but part of it is used by the integrated graphics card so it wouldn't have worked well anyway. Time to get a real card...

Release day is today. UPS just delivered mine. Installing it as I write this. Think I will be out of EVE for a bit.

I've never been a fan of integrated anything (audio or video). Sucks to think you have to buy a new video card just to play a game but assuming your problems are as I mentioned earlier it sounds like it is time for you to take the plunge anyway. Video cards have a roughly 2-3 year lifespan if you play games and yours, I think, is a bit out of date.
On the plus side you need not buy the most expensive video card out there to run this. I'd be surprised if a video card sold today did not support SM3 (but double check to be sure).
Just the way of the computer world. I have had several uber PCs I built that today couldn't run Windows XP much less a bleeding edge game like BioShock. Endless upgrades and thinning of my wallet seems to be a gamer's lot in life.
Note that a video upgrade will help when EVE updates their graphics engine as well (not to mention most any other game you play depending on what card you buy).

Kinda felt the same as Chode about it tbh. The art is gorgeous, and I'll play it for that alone. The demo was very linear, nothing particularly new gameplay-wise. You went from room to room, killing things and collecting medpacks.
But hey, its just a demo, hopefully they have held a lot of stuff back for the full version. Better that than a game like Prey, where they gave away just about every interesting idea they had in the demo.

I would very much recommend that you take some time and do more than just kill things and collect medpacks. You'll miss out on half the game otherwise.

Suffice to say I've just tried the demo on my PC (without and then with the aformentioned beta NVIDIA drivers), and intial results point to the linked Bioshock kills PC thread a likely possibility.
My AMD 3600+, 1GB Kingston, 7600GST cried. On lowest settings.
Definately a PC killer, this game, be warned.
PS: I've just had a chat with my techie friend who "obtained" a copy. Says his best gaming PC just blew and his backup silently died as well. I dont know if it's related to it being an "obtained" copy but considering the demo was too hefty even for my min-end, I'm leaning towards the game being too awesome for PC's around the world. -

the demo worked perfectly fine for me (amd3000+, 1gig ram and a 7600 agp @ 1024x768 max details) until the first part was finnished. upon loading the second part my comp crashed and the second time i tried the game frooze at exactly the same point.
