The horror atmosphere and dystopian setting are much to my liking but it seemed as if it may become quite generic as the game progresses. I'll most likely only pay for it if the multiplayer seems promising. |

It seems Bioshock isfollowing a similar line to System shock 2 which basically means the first few 'levels' are mainly for introduction and story advancment purposes. The game itself however does heat up later on so i think this will be a good one. It will also be intersting to hear the full story of this mysterious underwater city.
Oh after 2 hours downloading i tried it and loved it it also ran fine on my computer.

Fantastic setting.... i was blown at the drop in point alone, glugging for air, surrounded by those amazing looking flames.
As great as the setting is though.. 5 minutes in... bang it's a generic fps.... that single guy that runs up to you that drops to the floor in one solitary hit from your club.
That was my 10 minute impression of the demo, from 10 minutes it's cool n'all... but unless the story sucks me in... i don't see me playing through it on action sequences.. shoot him.. shoot him next.. activate the door ect...
All that, i just hope the story realy is the biz, the setting and technical benchmarks are superb.... i wana play through this ______

Just got done playing an 8 hour session of the game, and holy mother of god is it good. It starts off a bit slow, you dont really know wtf is going on or anything, but after about 2 hours the game throws some story at you, but not why its happening. Graphics are top notch, AI is good, weapons are pretty cool (SPOILER: the wrench is pretty much the best weapon after you get the upgrades for your guy). Anyone who says this game sucks or isnt good needs to get their head checked.

Not really. Its just made by the same people. Storywise ita not a sequal )systemshock takes place in the future)
SS is quite old now, so it might be hard to find though I found it on download last year. Cant remember where though,

This kind of reductionism always annoys me. Any game can be reduced in this fashion to sound utterly boring. Every FPS is shoot guys in room, move to next room, shoot guys there. Every RTS is build units, throw them at enemy, rinse and repeat till you win. Heck, EVE is just F1-F8, buy a bigger ship, do it again.
Obviously there is a lot more to most games. The BioShock demo does not give you a good taste for the depth of the combat. You get two plasmids in the demo and two guns. What you do not get are the interesting combos you get later in the game and setting traps for your enemies or using various ammo types for different situations. And of course the enemies get more difficult than the first guy you drop with one whack of your wrench. I suppose you could play this as a run and gun shooter but it is so much more fun finding creative ways to kill your enemies (one simple combo is set your enemies on fire and when they run to water to put themselves out electrocute the pool of water...lots of fun that).
And of course there is the setting and story and overall atmosphere. Bioshock is more a work of art in this respect and if it is something you cannot appreciate mores the pity for you. If you are a gamer who has become so jaded as to only see, "gun, shoot guy, next" I wonder why you play at all.
As for easy enemies wait till you fight a Big Daddy. See how far you get with one whack of a wrench on that guy.

Kinda felt the same as Chode about it tbh. The art is gorgeous, and I'll play it for that alone. The demo was very linear, nothing particularly new gameplay-wise. You went from room to room, killing things and collecting medpacks.
I would very much recommend that you take some time and do more than just kill things and collect medpacks. You'll miss out on half the game otherwise.
Bit patronising, but thanks for the 'advice' on how to play games. I explored every inch of the demo and that doesn't change the fact that the gameplay is pretty generic. As I wrote in the bit of my post that you ignored, hopefully the full game will bring more.

Did you play Final Fantasy 7? It didnt get me hooked until I had played for maybe one hour. Many games are like that, you have to explore the world, uncover storyline etc etc before you get hooked.
Judging a game by a 10 minute demo is perhaps a bit unfair.

For those using AVG virus software, fully updated, do a scan on the demo.zip file and the unpacked folder. AVG is reporting a trojan on the setep.exe file.
A lot of people are saying, on various forums, that AVG is picking up this "trojan horse Generic6.UMS" file a lot and people are reporting it in the bioshock demo zip.
Apparently AVG gave some false positives a while back with WoW but until Grisoft admit to a **** up I'm assuming it's genuine.

Well put. Reductionism should not be a test of a game. After all all games can be reduced to it's components. Myself, I will be buying this game. I downloaded the demo last night but didn't have time to install and play because my internet was messing up and I wanted to make sure my system could run it decently.
And the atmosphere of this game is very interesting and retro-scary. It takes some balls to set it during this time period considering that most kids nowadays have the attention span of a fly and lack the historical knowledge to get the references in the game. All I can say just from looking at the videos and screenshots is bravo!

Did you update it? Mine doesn't detect anything, and it's up-to-date.
1) Don't try and play this game with an integrated video card. 2) Don't try and play this game on overclocked hardware. 3) Hell yes, this game waas nice.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I just think that Bioshock is much deeper than it looks on the surface, and simply going through and shooting everything will lead to you experiencing a fairly small subset of the game. I want to try and go through the entire thing without firing a shot and see how far I get.

10 minute impression... i think id only been awake for 10 minutes also..
But yeah.... all i actualy did for those brief 10 minutes while droping the first coffee of the day down the trap, pretty much was coooo at the nice graphics, bash a guy with a wrench... and activate a door with an electrical bolt from my hand... very bland... kinda done that before... it's not like i closed the door on it though with my comments.. making it very clear '10 minutes' saw something more.. hoped the story was bang on so i could get past the boring generics of an fps... something not realy worth bashing (eve o forums ) as i kept an open mind on it....
Moving on though because i explained all that earlier.. i love games that drag me slowly.. resident evil.. classic example... i couldn't put it down after i found the first clues. Funny you should mention ff7, i bought that on the hype.. never realy played due to lack of free time... got made redundant 2 months later... in the 2 weeks i was out of work, played through it... loved every minute of it.
I think these days it's just the multiplayer thing for one... it's time though in truth.. im one of these folks that needs plenty of nothing time to sit there and get engrossed in things.. once it catches me im hooked.. didn't happen in 10 minutes this morning... but it's still an open book...
Thank god realy, late for work wouldn't have been good ______

If I didn't know it was from the makers of Systemshock beforehand, I'd be saying it felt very similar :P
Looking forward to playing the full version.. Seems like it will be a lot of fun. At the very least, keep me busy for a day or two.

Just beat it. Was a really good game, but I would suggest renting it (if you are playing it on 360 that is) took me about 12-15 hours on hard mode to beat. Story was cool and it moved more like a book (cant tell you why because of spoilers). I was very happy with my evil ending .

Tripple check, gameplay feels good for what you get to play...
Problem is, it runs crappy on my setup =/ I can't go 1680x1050 resolution with everything on high. That makes me sad :( Other then that, demo feels good, (when settings are turned down) Definitely getting this one.

Ran like a dream. 210 fps throughout, which was most shocking. First proper use of the Unreal 3.0 engine. Awesome game, going to get it on the 24th from Steam. I've also just heard 2K are doing Mafia 2 \o/. ---

Word of warning:
The full game requires online activation and patching.... and the patch servers (in the UK at least) are currently down with no ETA for a fix.
This means that if, like me, you had the game arrive in the post this morning you cannot play it at all until they fix the patch servers >_<
Another victory for the anti-piracy idiots in publishing companies that put useless attempts to protect their profits before the interests of gamers who actually buy the damn software. Going to go looking for a pirate copy of it now, since that would seem to be the only way to actually play it.

It is one of those ones you need to connec tot the internet to activate. Also you only get 2 licensed install credits to use (installed on 2 machines) then it locks out further installs until you remove 1 properley (This violates their own EULA). You MUST have SM3 on your card even though its not quoted on the specs.. lemme see what else.. oh yeah, Securerom installs a rootkit on your PC (even the demo does too). Think that about covers it.
