Edited by: Randell on 29/08/2007 02:01:20 Hello my fellow CAOD readers and posters!
After watching an EVE-TV episode I was very intrigued about a newsitem on scripts for filtering forum posts, with the goal of selecting which posts you want to see and which not.
Exercising such control over the forum would indeed be quite an asset! Obviously, this does most of all apply to this very CAOD forum. So I launched notepad and started working on those scripts. The result is a working script fulfilling one very specific purpose: filter the CAOD forum, based on your own preferences.
I have called this the 'CAOD Cleaner'.
What does it do?
It basically can filter out posts of characters, corporations and/or alliances whom you consider are posting unwanted forum drivel.
This link will show you what a CAOD thread looks like with the script enabled. Screenshot of some CAOD thread.
If this has sparked your interest, make sure you head over to this page for a more complete description and links to the necessary scripts to set it up yourself:
CAOD Cleaner
Regards, Randell
Ps. Insert default my corp/alliance has nothing to do with this disclaimer. It's ME and ME alone!
Also, forum mods: I was debating whether to post this in the CAOD forum or the Eve Tech forum. Opted for this one, since it's really useful for this forum in the first place, but apologies if it's out of place here.

On a serious note, this is a useful tool and if you made it so that you could collapse and expand all posts then it would catch on with the entire forum.
Plus people get curious of what is written even after filtering. Like I guarantee you the OT will read this, he probably won't reply but hes curious as hell especially in his own thread. sry
But anyways, this tool has potential, especially with the corporation and alliance filter. Could have avatars replaced with other images, color different cell backgrounds based on name/corp/alliance id.
Also a filter ALL feature would be neat, or how about text only mode. gimme gimme

Is it possible to do filtering based on an exclusion list rather than an inclusion list? Rather than having to manually add every new forum alt, it'd be nice to filter it to only show posts from members of major alliances.

Can I set it to automatically filter trolls that are clearly alts, but that the mods seem to ignore?

I would prefer CCP build something into the forums so that noob corps are just blocked from posting on these forums and that any character with under 2 million skill points can not post anywhere on any forum except new player discussions and tech help.

I have no doubt this is a useful tool, and i look forward to using it, but kind of s ahame we even need it tbh. Forum alts are simply lame. If you have something to say, say it, regardless of if your alliance wants you to post or not. Until they start paying for your eve accounts, I don't think they have any right.
If you are afraid your main will be flamed for what you have to say, maybe...just maybe, don't say it? Although even if everyone did start posting with thier mains, i'd still probably use this to filter out goon posts...

I've gotten some mails with questions and/or requests for addons to the script. Going to collect those and see if something more can be added to it.
But don't let that stop anyone from making chances to it them selfs. I put it out there so people can do their own thing with it. And some like Joshua Foiritain and Obed seem to be doing that just fine.
Again thanks for the responses..

Not possible, it would have to be completely server side for that to work as theres no way to feed a corp/alliance name into the text file that contains the banned names on your hardrive trough your browser.
Originally by: Domania Now only if you could make it to filter threads, that would be a dream come true. Get working on that!
Technically it could filter threats based on the Poster name but it wouldnt be able to take into account the corp or alliance as those are not listed on the topic view page. -----

Ok, so I was bored...
Version 2.0
Changes: * Contains the ability to show / hide without the popup. * Show the Name / Corp / Alliance of a poster. Filter by clicking. * Unfilter by clicking. * General code cleanup.
I'd suggest you uninstall the old script, then install the new, just so that FireFox doesn't get confuzzed.
Time for a beer!

Clicking on 2.0 installs 2.1, also when I click on the hide function on the page it does not save that as a preference and the user is visible again once the page is refreshed. Also I cannot find a place to manually enter preferences in the text file of the new version.

Brilliant!
One enhancement suggestion though.... Make an option so you can filter out posts of less than 'X' lines too (with 'X' defined by you). Quoted text should not be in the count....

It might if you were filtering a bunch of alliances, but I have a feeling there's only one alliance that's getting filtered for the most part. That would be the one that's already in the file when you download it...

This service is the equalivent of the Anti-Peril sunglasses that Ford Prefect had in Hitchhikers - They turned completely black at the first sign of trouble, thereby preventing its wearer from seeing anything that might upset them.

But you can't pod alts. While I think that being able to filter entire alliances sucks the ability to filter alt posters etc makes it a nice thing to have.
Basically, this script is a nice tool, but if Eve-o forum code were newer than something made circa-1990's and also had a team of semi-competent moderators we wouldn't even have the need for it.

There is a responsibility which comes with the freedom of speech.
But generally just coz someone has the right to say something does not mean I have to listen to it.
The purile drivel that infests these boards from Goons has meant the children are now running the nursery school.
It is clear trying to discuss anything with them on these boards is pointless, so the community has devised a solution, and that is to just ignore them.
The boards will be a better experience for many.

Good Idea, and easily done:
Things I did: * Added the feature to automaticly hide no-corp and no-alliance posts * Removed the version number from the script name, alowing the users to update without blowing away their settings * Added a default for the list of filtered things
You'll have to uninstall the last one, but this should be the last time that step is necessary...

Needs the ability to show a filtered post just once without unblocking the name/corp/alliance (like the [show] thing did that you removed). Also when I block something by clicking on it, where is this information stored? Doesn't seem to be in the .js file.

Given most of Goons posts are offensive attention seeking nonsense removing the whole alliance means little quality is lost and a hell of a lot of rubbish is removed.
Much of the rubbish being posted is designed to annoy or attract attention, this tool ensures that does not happen.
Hopefully the mere existence of this tool will reduce the motivations for posting rubbish in the first place, because people are one click away from being ignored. Happy user of CAOD troll cleaner http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=584345 |

In a Firefox setting, if you type "about:config" into the address bar, then filter by "Greasemonkey", you'll find it.
Originally by: ZaKma Also if a person is blocked, I don't need to see their pic. Remove it and save some space (the good point about the old version was that it was just 1 line that it took, which would then expand if you clicked show). Bring that back.

Nice script Randell!
Perhaps you should add regular link styling as well? cursor="pointer" and text-decoration="underline" or just use an A element so that regular page style would apply.

Ability to totally filter out message just saying that "Filtered message from Kuolematon / Space Perverts and Forum Warriors / Cult of War" instead of displaying face and name. And perhaps button after that saying "Unblock" and then naturally button below everyone saying "Block person / corp / alliance" depending what you want to block.

Try using version 2.2. That one doesn't show the face. Just 1 line with [show] Name / Corp / Alliance.
And IE. Uhmm perhaps you should read that install guide. I think it clearly says FireFox only. But if you really really really want it for IE. Try these links and doing some coding yourself. (Can't be motivated to do that as I don't use IE). Add-on: IE Scripting addon Howto script: Learn scripting with IE7pro (Including section porting from FireFox)
Have fun.

Come on, your troll fails. If you're going to pretend to have some far out, moonbat opinion, the first step is to avoid linking to sites that are laughably wrong. People will not realize you're trolling if you link to sites that seem real.
Even though this is COAD, that doesn't give you an excuse to troll badly. Here, I'll demonstrate.
Firefox is an evil browser made by open source communists. Unlike Microsoft, who are a purely good company that exists in all of our interests, the makers of Firefox are out to control our computers. There is no way I will install that spyware on my machine! Have you looked at the source code? It automatically contacts its creators without my consent! What kind of crap is that? I'll stick to a browser made by an honest, God-loving corporation, thank you. or perhaps Honda is an evil car company run by communists in Japan to undermine our God-fearing nation. With the power of Satan, they create seemingly high-quality "cars," but what these are really are machines of sin, vehicles of death designed to condemn our children to hell! We must stop this curse of "imported" cars and only buy good, high-quality cars made by honest-to-God American car companies.

No, and I don't use Opera so I can't help you. However, the only things in the script that are Firefox specific are the way the events are attached and the saving and loading of settings. A coder with Opera and the ability to run user scripts shouldn't have a problem at all.
Originally by: Jim Way How do you set this up to also filter other forums like Eve General Discussion, etc.? Good script, thanks!
Install the new version
Version 2.2 --> Version 2.3 --------------------------------------------- Removed check for CAOD only, allowing the script to be used anywhere
Install information --------------------------------------------- * Right-click on the little monkey in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen * If you have a version number after your CAODCleaner in that listing, follow the steps below to save your settings, then uninstall the old one * Install the new version: CAOD Cleaner V2.3 * If you needed to save your settings, then restore them
To save your settings --------------------------------------------- * Type "about:config" into the address bar of Firefox * In the filter box, type "Greasemonkey" * Look for a line (in bold) that starts with "greasemonkey.scriptvals" and ends with a pipe-delimited list of things you have blocked (example: "HERRO KITTY|Moon Kitten") * Right-click on that line and choose "Copy Value", then Paste that into something for safe keeping... Notepad is good for this. * To restore you settings: click on the line again, select modify, and paste your old settings there.
Cheers, Jonny D. -----

Although Opera supports user.js, I don't think they support the preference store used in this script. Also, the author didn't test with Opera so there seems to be some trouble.
I will take a look and see if I can adopt this for Opera.

I am going to lock this thread, not only because some people feel the need to troll it but also because technicaly its off topic. I know this is a tool to help people who use CAOD alot, and i am happy to see any tools that improve people enjoyment of this section.
But it is not a discussion of Corporations, Alliances or Eve Organisation, or anything happening ingame.
Letting this thread continue would just mean people would find more and more reason to post non related CAOD stuff in this section unfortuntly.
click. - Thanks Hutch. ____
