I don't think there is a game on Earth that has 35k players playing on a server at the same time. eVe is really something.

I don't think anyone was offended and yes, 40k is the next big number. Well, 200k is the next big number that we will hit, but 35k is nothing to sneeze about. Heck, when I first started with CCP as the Community Manager, EVE had 35k accounts, a PCU of 5k was a big deal. We've come a long way.

Edited by: Chun on 04/09/2007 22:59:53 Hate to say that, but I already have seen 44000+ logged into the dreaded Second Life at once.
- "most players on one cluster": prolly SL with 46,500 (1) - "most accounts" record: certainly WoW (9,000,000+) - "biggest cluster" record: prolly SL with 2000 servers (2)
Although my personal "most fun", "most complex" and "most dynamic" records go to Eve anyway ;)
So let's recruit more buddies to show the Lindens that 44k are no big deal for us.

Actually it is. Having stalls open all over the world in amazing numbers and maintaining the quality even in remote countries... However, it's not balanced or delicate food. It's the leading edge of food in term of popularity, and in many country, quality too.
Don't forget that the world exists outside of the US and Europe. McDonalds and Blizzard are the same on that point of view, they didn't create anything. They took what was popular but existed in different products, made a single product out of it, and made money out of it.
If CCP was able to learn from them, Eve would be much greater. Their is a lot to learn from their method. For example, they could start by copying the WoW user interface: hotkeys for every actions could be so nice in Eve...
Still, gratz for the new record.

I respect Blizzard as a company and consider it more successful than CCP. I dont like WoW , but respect that its a comparatively well made fantasy MMORPG and hands down the single financially most successful MMORPG period.
I think EVE is currently the best Sci Fi game on the market, but its still a small niche product. The introduction of walking talking avatars ("Ambulation") may change that and push it into the Big Boyz league. The complexity and depth of EVE is what makes it attractive IMHO.
CCP has the continuing lead in concurrent users online and is well respected in the developer community for it. However, even they had to start sharding (--> EVE Chinese server .... for all I know that one was as big a bust as SOE's Japanese Star Wars Galaxies servers).
About BigMac ...if you speak about the restaurant INDUSTRY (!), it IS a big success worldwide, especially outside the english speaking countries. You dont have to like fast food to recognize a successful franchise.
Have fun

Clearly you have entirely missed the point. While McDonalds is one of the largest food chains in the country, it is not infact, on the leading, or cutting edge of the restaraunt industry. It is on the leading edge of the fast food industry, however, no one looks to McDonalds to learn about cutting edge food technology, great service, amazing decor, or anything but how fast you can deep fry a burger.

Errr, no, you're completely wrong. McDonalds is leading in term of customer service, speed of delivery / food making, publicity, implantation... and many other domains, and a lot of companies copy it.
That may surprise you, but in some other countries, McDonalds is the standard for clealiness, and seen as higher middle class food. It's only one example though. Making a business that spans over the world does mean that there is a lot of things in how they work that are looked up to and copied by others.
And, a lot of Eve concepts are the same as the concept in most other MMORPG around. Yeah, even your favorite MMORPG is doing it.

I would like to answer your claims about McDonalds but it would derail this thread. ----- I'll be in my pod |

Well, of course. No one wants to believe that McDonald is making quality food in the US and most of Europe. It's a cultural factor. In those countries, everyone believes that being successful involves some combinaison of the following : - being really lucky, - cheating, - lying, - making bad products.
It's safer to believe than people richer than us cheated or were lucky to get to that position, else, people would have to accept the fact that their own stupidity / lack of skill is responsible for their current position.
It's also easily seen in Eve. The big alliance are said to exploit any bug and are universally despised, and a lot of smaller corp just say 'come here, here we don't cheat, but because of that we don't get to the top'. Again, it's safer to assume that the other cheated than to accept the fact that they have better teamwork and skill.
On other MMORPG, the same can be seen to. Anyone that gets to a higher level than you isn't stronger because he's more skilled, has perfected his network of friend or anything else. It's because "he's a no-life" and has no social life or friends, because he shared his account or abused bugs.
I'm not saying all is black and white though. Some did cheat, lie and got lucky to get to the top. Some do not try to be the best, and enjoy their current position. But staying to the top for years does require a lot of skill and good ones. McDonalds, Blizzard, and even CCP, all three at the top in a category, have those skills. Which doesn't change the fact that companies copy each other all the time, to get even better.
And for nahme... even if your manager doesn't believe it, have him go to Asia or Africa. In some places, McDonald is what I spoke about. I know, because I've been living there. And, before someone says it, no, I've never work for them.
I agree that it's derailing the thread though...

I think ambulation will kick the subs up a huge amount. I know alot of people who wouldn't touch eve because there was no avatar. I was one of them. I started one day because I was bored, had no games to play and saw one of their adverts and saw that you didn't require a CC for the trial. I thought "**** it, I'll download eve and see what it's like.". Ambulation will give more immersion to the game. I can see purely socialisers and rp'ers picking up the game for that, and loving it.

Can EVE survive more players online at the moment single sharded ? Without a better load balancing strategy, I forsee a severe cluster frag coming up if tenthousands of new players come in to check out EVE Ambulation.
