I was looking for a new corp (and I still am thanks to these three jokers!) I was approached by a member of Goonwaffe and asked if I would like to join their corp, after submitting an application through their website into which it DEMANDED a full API key (First alarm bell) I was then interviewed and asked for a security deposit of 400 mil isk (Second Alarm bell) - which I paid. I was then approached by this guys 'supervisor' and re-interviewed as 400 mil was the 'mates rates' for joining and he demanded a further billion isk (Alarm bells and sirens are going off at this point) but I thought "I get it back in 30 days.... dont I?" so paid it. At this point a third person gets involved "Head of Internal Affairs" for Goonwaffe and I am interviewed for a third time and guess what he re-calculates my security deposit to be 60% of what I own.... at this point I turn round and say no (I know I should have done this sooner but rose tinted spectacles were blinding me) and unsurprisingly I was unable to recover any of the isk paid already.
Morale of the story: Do NOT follow any recruitment practises outside of the games mechanics, any corps that ask you to do so are NOT worth joining. They are lying cheating scamming ne'er do wells! |

The Goons has scammed for years and years with their recruitment...
Many threads on the subject. But as always go with ones gut feeling and if it's too good to be true then it usually is - as such do some research, a simple search on the forum would probably reveal their intentions.

This is why I said names or it didn't happen. Any respectable org would want to get to the bottom of this.
That said... this isn't that nut that's been trying to get into Goon's in the worst possible way is it? Kind of trying to back into the situation?

Christ.
You pulled out of a recruitment process they had invested time in, and wondered why you lost the money?
FYI if you had paid the deposit, you would have gotten it back. AND you would have a corp.
You can't blame them for YOUR choice to break the recruitment procedure.
Goons are good people; their leader is the Chairman of the player council and often acts as a reliable 3rd party in large ship transfers. - "Do not touch anything unnecessarily. Beware of pretty girls in dance halls and parks who may be spies, as well as bicycles, revolvers, uniforms, arms, dead horses, and men lying on roads -- they are not there accidentally." -Soviet infantry manual, issued in the 1930's |

Goons are honorable space warriors. They would never do such a thing!
Take it as a lesson. Maybe it will save you from a scam in real life, with real moneys involved. So you should actually send some iskies towards those three goon heroes as a reward, for teaching you not to trust anyone on internets. For Love. For Peace. For Honor.

Sorry but he is trolling you.
I tried to join a corp once, they also demanded full API access and upload my character to a public website. When I had done so, they raised the skillpoint-requirements for their corp, in fact they did it 3 times while their recruiter was processing my application. After that a lot more bureaucracy came with requests to tell them the dates my API keys were created, then that I should fill every empty character slot... and then I withdrew the application.
The valuable lesson was, do not trust anyone, even the minimum trust to give them a API key is too much and never ever pay fees, security deposits or anything. If they are not happy to have you with them, then you have already wasted your own time. |

Meta gaming is a serious part of the game, and you can never be to cautious about spies joining your corp. So they can see how much isk and assets you have? big deal. without you being stupid enough, they cannot steal it, even with API key. For Love. For Peace. For Honor.

From the API page:
Quote:Full Access API Key Allows access to all your character information available in the API, including wallet and market information, and your corporation's information as well. Please be careful about who you give this key to. See below for more information.
What is an API key? What do I use it for?
The API key is a private code that identifies your account. Combined with your user ID, this key allows third party programs and web sites to access information about your characters and corporations. Using this data, such utilities can improve your EVE experience by providing useful functionality such as wallet exports, skill training notifications, and other tools.
Is this safe? Can someone steal my account?
It is safe to provide your user ID and API key to applications and web sites as long as you are prepared to allow the application or web site to see your character and corporation information.
Sharing your API key, full or limited, does NOT give people access to your account. Sharing your account password would. The API key only allows the recipient to view your character and corporation data but gives them NO control over it. They are NOT able to log in to the game or post on the forums with the API information. The API key is in no way generated from your account password - there is no way to calculate your password using this information.
This is the only safe way to give programs and web sites access to your data. Do not give out your account username or password to any person, program, or web site. Please keep in mind that doing so is a violation of the EULA and can lead to account termination.
I still don't like it.
If you are not certain that the web site or program asking for your API key is safe, please do not give it to them! You are responsible for any usage of the information obtained by using your personal API key.
I gave someone my API key and now I want them to stop using it!
If you believe that someone is misusing your API key, you can create a new one with the buttons above. Please note that all programs and web sites that are using your old API key will no longer be able to access your data unless you provide them with the new API key.
You can view activity on your API account by using the API Access Log viewing page. If you believe someone is misusing your API credentials, please regenerate your API keys using the top half of this page.
My question is: how can you be careful who you give your API to in a game where you are not supposed to trust anyone?

It's the same mentality that allowed the player to be scammed inthe first place. Namely, misplaced sense of loyalty.

There's a link on the Something Awful forums to the full and proper process for applying to Goonswarm. Any deviation from that established process and you're simply asking to be scammed. You first have to be a paying member on SA Forums as well, just btw.
There is no other way, it's via the SA forums or nothing, unless The Mittens himself holds your hand through the process.
I know, I've read through it several times, there is no way you should be scammed the way you have been if you had followed the proper recruitment procedure. Perhaps some research into it before jumping-in should have been done ?
