I'm Minmatar and was wondering what ships are the best to warp in after a mission is over and salvage all those pretty wrecks. Something speedy and large cargo right? Problem is I can't find a ship like that :(. What do you guys use?

Hi DeathVal, I found the Hurricane battle cruiser to be quite an effective salvaging ship. 8 high slots to fit 4 salvagers and 4 tractor beams 4 mid slots to fit MWD and cap batteries... mine had max speed of 700m/s 6 lows for all cargo expanders.... mine had about 2000m2 cargo space with tech 2 expanders. Nice...

I normally bookmark my wrecks and turn in missions (so there is no respawns or whatever) then after a couple of missions I use a destroyer (caldari one) 8 high slot, movability as a frigate, 4 tractor 4 salvager, in meds 1 mwd 3 cap recharge and in low an expanded cargo deactivated, which i can activate if i need more cargo.

Hurricane is a very nice salvage ship (albeit, expensive salvage ship, but the more you have to dock, the more time you spend on looting. time = money).
I'm using 3x T2 cargo expanders, 2x T2 ISTABS, and 1x T2 Nano.

IMO having 8 high slots is pretty important for a salvager. So that limits me to Destroyers, Battlecruisers and Battleships. After that top speed is important, for moving between spawns. Finally Cargo space, it is very annoying when you run out, although with Tractor beams, Jetcans aren't completely impractical to drag around, but they do slow you down.
I use as Thrasher with 4xSalvagers,4xTractors in the highs, 2 cap power relays in the lows. For speed I have a MWD and then the other 2 mids are either cap batteries or cap rechargers. This has a max hold of 400m3 and can reach speeds of about 1400m/s.
This is fine for salvaging multiple level 3 missions. If the cargo hold gets full it is normally due to either Scrap Metal ( worth about 2ISK per m3 ) or Cap Booster Charges.
I haven't done enough level 4 missions to be able to comment but I gather they may require more space so a Battlecrusier is probably the right ship for the job.

I use the Hurricane with 5 expanders (+ a nano for more acceleration) which gives 1600 m3 (2000 m3 with 6). Quite a few of the Lvl 4 missions produce more than 1600 m3 even if you dump the Scrap. As I use a second account alt, I just set my mission runner to follow at 500m then he can take up the slack if the salvager runs out of space.

A setup I am comfortable with at the moment is:
Thrasher High: 3 Tractors / 5 Salvagers Mid: 2 Cap Booster I / 1 10MN Afterburner II Low: 2 Cargo Expander II Rig: 1 Salvage Tackle
I get 600+m3 of cargo space, a real quick salvage and, when not towing or salvaging, a self-sustaining 930m/s to get to those pesky wreaks 60k/m away.

I actually use a Exequror Cruiser for my Salvage vessel. Hi: 2 x Tractor / 2 x Salvage Me: Sm Shield Booster II / Sm inef Hull Rep / 10MN AB / Sensor Boost I Lo: 100mm Rein nano Plate I / Sm Armor Rep II / Cargo Exp II Rig: Salvage Tackle I Drones: 3 x Med + 2 x Lite Scout
I get 960m3 cargo space. Yeah, I know, it doesn't have all the Hi slots like a Destroyer but, I sure like it.

Thrasher: High: 4x Salvager I 4x Small Tractor Beam I
Mid: 1x 1mn ABII 1x Cap Recharger
Low: 1x Co-Processor 1x Expanded Cargohold II
Speed with AB ~420 m/s, 509 m3 cargo space, never runs out of cap.
I use the drag-the-jetcan-around to salvage, then just hop back with a hauler if it's that much (level 4's can drop upward of 3km3 in a room)

Destroyers were made for salvage operations (which is good, because they're of little use otherwise). What makes them good is high cargo space, many high slots, and high speed. It's this last point that makes them better for this task than battlecruisers. My fit is similar to others:
Thrasher High: 4 Salvagers, 4 Tractors Mid: 10mn AB, 2xcap recharger Low: 2xExpander
Yes, I use a cruiser AB on my destroyer. It corners like an aircraft carrier, but even with cargo expanders, it gets to the next cluster of wrecks FAST (~1km/sec).

on the topic of destroyers for salvaging, go with the interdictors useless in high sec otherwise they make great salvage-loot collection ships and have some extra bonuses over the t1 versions esp the eris

Well...there is the matter of training tome on them.
But destroyer wise, the catalyst is the best. It has the most amount of cargo w/ t2s (840m3) and has the highest cap recharge of all destroyers. --------------- This sig has been censored in fear of recieving the ban hammer... |

Remember to put on 3 Salvage Tackle rigs!
Yes, I know they're expensive, but they REALLY speed up the salvaging.
I use a Cormorant for salvaging/looting, and have 5 tractors and 3 salvagers on it. Those 3 salvagers easily keeps up with the 5 tractors and the only time I wait for the salvagers is if I'm hit by 2 or 3 fails in a row on each (which happen extremely rarely).

"Quality" of salvage doesn't directly depends on the ship, but on a very few things : - high slots (for number of salvagers / tractors) - salvage skill - salvage rigs
So basically, any 8 slots ship is good for salvaging .. regarding that, you can take in consideration the cargo bay, the speed and the agility
As of now i tried - cormorant - trasher - typhoon
For me the best is typhoon so far .. the problem of destroyers is the capacitor and the cargo bay, yeah but typhoon is a bs, bs is low and agility is awful .. wrong. You can easily fit some nano and stabilizers with 2 cargo t2, plus, you don't have to fear for the capa :p My typhoon fly up to 488 m/s (no mwd, i'm salvaging during mission with my alt :p) and has got 1200/1300 m3 cargo.
Since yesterday i'm trying hurricane, still didn't find the best balance between speed and cargo (thx quickfit for messing up with the lowered velocity .. 101 m/s on it instead of 151 in game :/) but i think it will be better than my phoon .. for now with hurri, i've got a better agility, and twice the cargo -_-

I'm using a Cormorant for salvaging, but any racial Destroyer would work.
I have been through a few lvl 4 missions where my cargo space ran out, but I just jettisoned some of the bad items, such as scrap metal and cap boosters, that take up way too much space.
A BC might work if you have an extra laying around, but if you're looking to buy a ship, go with a Destroyer.

Gallente destroyer is best t1 salvage ship. Gets around 800 m3 with expanders, has enough speed to zoom around and enough cap to run it all. Get's even one drone to pop some bugged cans that happens sometimes.
Any other race destroyers works also. As do bigger ships, but they have problem with mass and agility sometimes.
For 'the best' look towards interdictors for salvaging. they have very good cargo space and speed/agility.

Actually a properly fitted hurricane has better agility, better cargo and better cap than a destroyer. And it can fit both AB and MWD at the same time so you can salvage active missions (farmed ones or those like duo of death where you finish the objective but your BS is 50km from the critical loot) and finished ones without changing setup. Also you can use the AB for short speed bursts that dont make you run past the cans, and the MWD for long distances.
There is no 'n' in turret There is no 'r' in faction There is no 'a' in Scorpion There is no 'e' in Caldari There is no makeup in rogue drones |

Cargo Expander drawbacks are passive from Rev II so no point to keep it deactivated.

Personally I like the exequror, its not a big pretty ship with many hi-slots but it has got what you need and than some if you just like to salvage the good ships (like only the BS's). 600 m3 cargo with a 10% increase per level definately is a nice little bounus, it makes it kindve pointless to even think of a cargo expander. It may have 4 hi-slots but thats good enough if you just salvage BS's since they never seem to be close bye, and a MWD and tractor beam combo makes you fly to the wreck and "stick" to it in no time. Not to mention this little thing is quick an angile compared to the thrasher I used before this, and probably more than the BC's and BS's people use.
Mine can't run everything permantely but than again (cap skills only lv4, and 3 in MWD), but than again I dont need to. And my setup is more meant for speed than anything and agility than anything else since I hate salvaging.
Hi slots 3 salvager 1 tractor beam
med 1 mwd 1 small cap battery 1 med cap battery 1 cargo scanner (so I know if the wreck over there is worth looting, since i only loot/salvage bs ships, i use this to check the BC's and anything potentcially profitable)
low 2 i-stab 1 nano
I believe thats how my ship is setup, going off memory. I can hit about 1350m/s in a few seconds, and combined with the tractor beam and being able to turn on a dime, the fact I dont have several tractor beams doesnt feel like a disadvantage. Espically since I can travel 50km away to get to the next wreck in a blink of an eye. Dude that Scammer just ninja'ed that Carebare's wallet!! |

Edited by: Teralya on 13/09/2007 09:33:46 I prefer the Stabber for salvaging.
Highs: 2x Tractor Beam 4x Salvager I
Mids: 1x AB II (as you can't MWD in most Deadspace) 2x Cap Recharger II
Lows: 3x Cargo Extender II
Rigs: 1x Salvage Tackle I
Gives me about 860m¦ cargo space at about 230m/s (~600something with AB).

To salvage effectively, you want to be in range of as many wrecks as possible and to always feed the salvager with something. You should not ahve a salvager sitting idly.
With 4-5 tractor beams, you would be dragging a bunch of close wrecks along as you move towards another bunch of wrecks in the 19km range. Whilst towing the wrecks, you could be tranferring the loot and activating the salvager.
Slow ineffcient looting is when you are sitting at one wreck site waiting for the salvager to finish scanning the wreck, or you can't move to the other wrecks because there are too many untractored wrecks nearby.
I had a Caracal with 3 beams and 2 salvagers (3 salvaging rigs as well) and was always finding it slow because i couldnt keep up witht the tractor beams. The wrecks were in range to scan but I couldnt move to the next wreck site >20km away lest I was out of salvaging scanner range for the wrecks next to me.

I use a battleship.
My main has a pimped out 'Geddon and my Alt has a pimped out Apoc.
Both have 5 tractors and 3 salvagers. Both have around 2000m3 of cargo. Both can move in excess of 220m/s
Admittedly I didn't buy the BS just for salvaging - they are both old ships I no longer have any other use for. Both work really well though -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Destroyer. Even on L4s towing can for excess loot, take the best come back with indy for the rest. Melt it and get your mins.
Bmking the mission well, trailing the wrecks out by moving in a straight line or "boxing" the NPCs so theyr all in one location, helps for salvaging later.
The more salvagers you run on a wreck the better your chances are for a one cycle salvage. BS I go full 5 salvagers, med wrecks 3 and 2, frigate/dessy 2 or 1 a piece.

I use the Amarr destroyer - the Coercer. 4*Tractor Beam, 4 * Salvager and lows a mix of T2 Expanders and Cap Relays. Mid is only a 10MN AB II, but that is enough speed imo, since if you're going upwards of 500m/s you'll be going faster than the beam can pull and you'll lose tractor lock on your wreck.
The way I salvage - I'll always be locking and tractoring the next 2 wrecks while I'm tractoring and salvaging the current 2. I only activate my AB if there's that stupid BS wreck that wants to be 70k away when I think I've finished :(

Nano-istab Sigil with 3x salvage tackles and AB. Plenty of space(3600m3), enough speed(ca 500m/s) and with 3x salvage rigs and 2 salvagers on highs it salvages quite efficiently.
