I don't know if this has anything to do with it but at the time of the crash I was creating a corp and hit the search button for ticker, after that nothing.

I'm not an expert or anything but comparing corp tickers must be one big and demanding query on the database considering the number of existing corporations.

Idea on why its crashing..... People and Places has been borked for several days.

Its still possible to copy bookmarks from P+P to your hangar/cargo but you cannot drag them back at all. You just get the circling timer window that locks the window forever and never populates the BM. Could this be putting the DB in a cycle of exceptions?

After a though investigation we have determined the the server crash is caused by an unfortunate combination of
 a) network packets traveling uphill
 b) a hamster in the running wheel having a coronary
 c) cosmic ray particles crashing through the hard disk platter

PS. And in addition one user's password was too complex to decrypt. Account banned.

The server ops team has been monitoring the server issues from both yesterday and today. We have log dumps that are being analyzed by both internal staff and outside resources in an effort to both troubleshoot and resolve the lack of server stability. We hope to find the solution very soon, as we dislike seeing TQ drop as much (or even more so) than the community does.

You might toss around the EULA "we can do what we want.."

BUT! Is QA particually impressed with the last 24hours of eve ? (and general stability in the last year...)

That would be the onces where the company actually feels the responsiblility for offering a service that actually works to paying customers. EVE is more like - u play a beta on your own risk and u pay for the participation.

Dammit CCP, the first free few minutes I get all day and EVE isn't even up!

I get up, make myself some breakfast, put some washing on, clean the house, take the bins out, mow the lawn, water the plants, do some job hunting, have a shower, make some dinner, take out the washing, put the drier on, do the dishwasher again, make a doctor's appointment, search for some more jobs, and finally decide to play EVE...

 I'll translate for everyone.

Oh, crap, the server is down again. We have dumps with loads of information, unfortunately, none of it has of yet, proved in any way useful at isolating our server side issues.

What does this mean? We have a slightly more informed idea about what is going on here than the community does. In fact, we're beginning to panic a bit here, and are seeking third part intervention to help us isolate the issue.

Please don't get mad and cancel your subs, as this would harm our key metrics, and we don't want that.

External staff, that means those Microsoft goons?
I propose the following, prepare a nice letter with your lawyers and wave it around in front of their boss. should make things go faster.

Oh, and have a Test-server install with a diffrent database software, and mention it casualy. 'Its just for testing, no, we dont plan to move away from MS DB server, no worries. we, uh, just wanted to see how the other one looks..'

 Oh, and good luck.

"Revelations 2.2.1 deployed on TQ. The server has been opened." server status: "unknown"... eum.. maybe a chance in MOTD would be a good idea.. like an estimate on when the server would be up.. or who we can cast the blame on... or.. or.. well almost anything else that would suggest that the server might be having a nervous breakdown (or at least the database has)

Hmm.. Now this has been said before and it always makes me wonder... It failed over...

From my limited understanding of SQL clusters I read that the primary node died, causing the secondary node (or tertiary or whatever) which was passive, to take over and become active.
I thought the idea of failing over was that the passive node is supposed to take over, you fix the primary one and you fail back (or wait till downtime). What good is a cluster, with a passive node standing by, while that second node apparantly cant handle the load.

(Obviousely besides the fact that its annoying the primary node keeps going down)

How about a new topic in the information portal.
It should be a sticky , be at the top of the forum and should be called "Server Status" or something similar.

Dont allow posting to it but keep it bang up to date with the status of the server and whats been done to fix it and an ETA.

Everytime the server goes down we are left in the dark , the MOTD is never used as far as I can tell and trawling the forums is usually neccessary to find out WTF is going on and whether its worth sticking around until its fixed.

2 days in a row now we have had this issue.
 Your not doing so well.

While most companys who operate on the web look for a 4 9's or even 5 9's of availablity i.e. uptime of 99.99% or even 99.999% you allready allow yourself a very slack 95.83% availablity as your target.

If you did not have a Unique product.
You would have been out of business a long time ago.
Can you imagine this kind of level of service from Google or your internet banking service ?

Please poke your QA Dept with a pointy stick.

 Your's most annoyed.

 I'm not angry.
 I'm not disappointed.
I know things happen, but i'm just really REALLY falling off my chair and laughing at my luck.

Last night, i lagged(just a bit) and it was enough to make me warp twice, the delay there, made my harbinger go pop. Rats got me, durnit!

Get back to the agent, say "sorry bud, no can do on the rat popping." Agent says "Get the flarn out of here and don't come back!"(my standing fell just below the limit of that particular agent so i have to go down a notch in the agent levels) Ok, giggling a bit at my luck.

Then my friend, who was finishing a mission with 15 or so BS(+ escorts), said that "Hey, come salvage some stuff and get some extra do-re-mi!". Nice! I can buy a new ship easier . Get there, salvage one ship and server goes pop JUST long enough for the wrecks to go bye bye. At this point, i'm holding myself up on the chair my sheer willpower

NOW, today, i start an angel extravaganza(after lifting my agent standing back up) and in the middle of it, come ye old "servers will be down for this and that time". Ok, no biggie. Notice on a chat channel "Ah yeah, todays the 3 hour one."

 *stop,
  , *
So after losing my ship last night(a healthy 50mil pop to my assets with all the modules), not being able to salvage my friends BS killings, finally completing the angel extravaganza and not being able to salvage/loot it...i just fell apart in a hysterical laughter fit.

SO, the point of this? Well, honestly, this server break just as i was about to start playing is the BEST thing that's happened in the two days 'cause it didn't flarn anything up

2 days in a row now we have had this issue.
 Your not doing so well.

While most companys who operate on the web look for a 4 9's or even 5 9's of availablity i.e. uptime of 99.99% or even 99.999% you allready allow yourself a very slack 95.83% availablity as your target.

I don't think internet spaceships are comparable to google or ibs! No really, think how simple queries are for google or a banking service? Then compare them to 30k x y z coordinates of internet spaceships! Or something..

I think CCP dev team goals are totally out of common sense.

Who care about new ship design graphics while game crashes every day, i have 1 minute lag at some moments, EVERY DAY, ALONE IN A SYSTEM, cargo/market/items opens in 15 seconds (and no, its not my connections fault) and so on.

More than that, while the game is practically unplayble (tbh this is the worst mmog i saw, in terms of performance and uptime), a whole dev team is focusing in implementing new graphic engine.

I think this is lack of respect towards the ones who pay your bills.

There should not be anything other that "We are focusing all our resources on fixing the lag, crashes and server poor performance". Anything else is mockery towards your paying customers.

Heave you heard of the "Neverending Story",well I am in the never ending mission.
I got this mission L4 Vengence ,though oh wow can make some good cash.
Little did I know the server would go down 4 times, each time after I have cleared the first two rooms.
I take a break to reload and refit and the Fricking server crashes
. Then of course everything is reset and I have to clear the first two rooms again. And now the server has gone down for the 5th time since starting this mission.
Feel like I am back in simulator training and the instructor has just reset the
 simulation again.

I doubt anyone defends incompetence. More a case of **** happens and with 30K+ users on one server at any time, there's bound to be problems. Some of us already experienced this with the old servers when it hit 18K+ at any time. My guess is that CCP may have overestimated the power of these new servers.

C'mon guys, stop complaining like old grannys! It doesn't help at all to anyone. CCP are doing hell of a job of running and maintaining the most complex MMORPG system platform in the world. And I am damn serious - this is not your home PC and even one simple restart takes forever.

I could only admire them for the efforts and dedication they put into this game.

And uh, by the way, your 15 EUR per month worth 0.02 EUR per hour. Not that big of a personal loss to complain. Go and visit a theater or a concert - you will pay twice as much for only 2 hours...

 My 0.02 cents...

Any idea why the forums have been flakey for the last couple of days too?

Tonight, I have repeatedly been dropped to the "something happened to our planck bubble stabilizer" page, or sometimes the login page (?) when trying to access the forums after the game server went down.

Could not connect to the specified address. Odds are that you have not established an internet connection, the server isn't running, or the server address or port number was wrong.

I am very much for a skill queue, currently as this crash occured I was trying to start my next skill, now I have to go to work soon with no training underway...

Could I just make a request that the updates in the OP could be timestamped, to save trawling through 6 pages of 'ohn0es server down' looking for dev responses?

Don't get me wrong, I think these responses are warranted, but it would make it easier to understand what's going on.

A lot of us have lost out on skill training because of these outages. People have asked for years for CCP to introduce a skill queue. This is the perfect example why such a feature would be so useful.

You could have a primary skill and secondary skill. The primary keeps training until it is finished and then the secondary starts training until you assign another primary. So you could in essence keep your small skills as primary, and should there ever be another server crash and your primary skilled finished training, it would default to your secondary, that way you don't lose out on important skill training.

A few days doesn't hurt you. I've had to miss weeks before due to payment screw ups (that were my fault btw, not CCP's :P)

Seriously, if all the failover does is crash the service, why even bother running it anymore? A "high-availability" system with hot failover that DOESN'T WORK (and that is about as proofen up till now as it can be) is worse than none. Especially if the failover activates for "unknown reasons" and the primary servers seems healthy after the failover as happened in the past.

Please open a reimbursement petition with your software supplier. This is getting ridiculous.

 0600: wake up
 0605: log into Eve
 0615: Eve server crashes
 .... shower, shave, and wait
0710: server up and login to set skill training
0757: not paying attention and put my truck into a wall at work, (no damage - high bumper resists)
0920: driving a 2 ton forklift at work I get brake failure and smash into a 6 meter rack of merchandise. (rack had alot of structure points and remained standing, forklift can be armor repaired)
1015: get the standard comments about being a immigrant. (I felt so Minmatar at that point)
1115: get told by fellow worker that one of my bosses has "gotten with" my exwife and has been telling the other coworkers. (Now I felt Amarian and had kill rights by divine authority)
1117: call exwife - yup (ouch - hull shot)
1120: quit job (sings a little ditty - "It¦s a Pirates Life For Me")
.... look for a job, give up, still too mad
 .... plot revenge
1530 logon to Eve and start buying pvp gear and ships (I am so carebear I actually had to research what to do and what I might need)
1800 all gear assembled, scouting the system I will begin my downward security spiral (trembling with anticipation)
 1825 all looks good

 Database issues still :(
Are you actually looking at ways to fix this or are you just collecting logs to make it appear you are dong something?
Have you thought of options to shrink the database:
 - create a story about a mysterious mist that is currently rolling thru the regions that destroys secure and audit log containers that have not been sprayed with a new protection paint that came out a month or 2 ago? Can start this over but at least you can get rid of containers that belong to people/corps no longer in the game.
 - all new accounts that have not been accessed for over a month after they expired are off-loaded and a simple request form can have it restored in a day or 2?
 - all paid for characters that have not been accessed for say half a year are off-loaded and a simple request ..?

these are just a couple of suggestions - if I can see or told what you are actually doing each day as maintenance I might be able to offer more substantial suggestions to fix a problem that appears to be just increasing.

 Thanks for your time

 Ok, peace

It's just that I am in the IT business and I know what it takes when a SQL Server 2005 Enterprise cluster gets crazy. It really sucks and it is not always the developers to blame. It could be anything from a faulty RAM module, to a high-quality M$ patch. Yes, we hear various opinions - go and get MySQL, go and get Oracle, migrate to Linux / Unix / MacOS etc. Unfortunately it is not that easy. A couple of months ago a customer of mine got a major SQL Server cluster crash - it took us 2 hours with the MS Business Critical support team to pinpoint the problem - it was a bug in the firmware of one of the IBM DS400 storage arrays serving the DB. It has messed up the SCSI reservations and both cluster nodes lost their access to the shared disk resources. It has been working fine for years and it crashed...the real challange is to explain to the top managers of this 300M company, that they are screwed, because of a bug seeded in the firmware by a developer in Mumbai (no offence) or wherever...

I agree that CCP should have somebody to keep the players updated, but sometimes it is not easy to expose your dirty underwear...

dude, all the devs say in threads like this is: server went boom because someone spilled beer. we are working on it, stay tuned.

 1. As we posted earlier, there was a failover that caused the server to crash.
 2. We are working with Microsoft to get it fixed.
 3. Once we get the results from the techs we will do as they recommend and hopefully that will fix the problem.

If your cluster nodes could not "see" the Quorum disk it could be one of your "wonderful" DS series storage arrays. IBM is for servers, Hitachi is for storage. My 2 cents...

You must be new, welcome to EVE!

And to all the people crying for a stop to new content, there is one flaw in the whole system that CCP is quick to point out. There are different people working in different divisions that have different jobs. The content people cannot work on server issues and bugs. They continue happily creating new content that causes the issues blissfully unaware.

Instead, I propose that the content developers continue what they are doing, but instead of releasing it as they finish it, its stored for larger, more spread out expansions whilst the server is being stabalized.

 o/ Straw man argument! :)

You suggest "CCP" can't control where resources are channeled. The reality is that CCP made a decision to spend money on content instead of problem resolution.

The community has enough content to keep us busy and we want problem resolution more than we want new content.

Spend more money on headcount and resources for problem resolution and less money on new content. Simple as that. Can be done!

Wouldn't be anything like supporting a few hundred thousand users across a university system would it? Oh, wait. There goes your point. Right out the window. Just like the fast food you handed to the fatty in the SUV. Sorry, kid. You don't impress me with your wishful thinking.

See, thing is... I do this stuff for a living. I know what CCP goes through. I'm hardly a fanboy, but listening to a kid getting home from school and not being able to play his video game with his e-buddies? Doesn't faze me at all. In fact, I'd much rather they get so ****ed off by a week of downtime they all left to go play some other game, and left Eve for the grown-ups. So how about it? Go somewhere else. I hear WoW has lots of little kids to talk to. Right up your alley.

We believe we have traced this issue to a failed controller card on our old RAMSAN that we attached a few days ago.

Our hardware profile has not changed much during the past 30 days other then adding the unit back into the SAN array.

Our other failovers that we have experienced since on the new SQL hardware was due to insufficient memory resources being assigned to the OS, that failover happened the day the new hardware was installed and was corrected, and another error was fixed by the installation of Service Pack 2 on the SQL server and the final one due to max degree of parallelism set too high and our queryÆs using too many processors at once leaving other requests too starve.

These failover problems we are now having are the ones we were having prior to the upgrade of the SQL hardware (same error codes and little evidence of errors in the logs).

Currently unfortunately we are running on the effected hardware but we have implemented steps to reduce the use of it by shifting all I/O's to the new RAMSAN, we will not be able to completely phase out the effected hardware until the next downtime and then we can switch too a different controller later on in the week on the unit and try and re-integrate it back into the cluster when we have ran a large battery of tests on it.

We are working to address these issues, we care very deeply about the stability of TQ.

To give you a brief recap on our database and the amazing things it does, with the increase in the player base and new features that have been rolled out via the API site and other tools we are at over 8,500 transactions a second, so you can see how trying to go back and go through all those transactions and data for the 1 transaction call that causes the server to initiate a failover can be a daunting task.

But we are fully confident that we can fix this issue in a timely manner. Please have patience with us.

We are throwing our full resources into this problem and feel as helpless as you do.

 Our apologies.

Now rip the power cord out of the old ramsan, and reboot the damn server. It's down AGAIN!

Unfortunately your apologies dont bring back all the lost time all of us had, doing same thing over and over when they should have been done once and than moved to more important life issues. I'm doing a single freaking mission for 2 days ffs. It's not fun. Game that's not fun is a bad game. Think about it, and think about market competition.
