The Translation Team, now part of the Bug Hunter Division, is now accepting applications. The primary job of this team is to test various localizations of the EvE-Online client, find and iron out translation errors.
We are currently looking for native speaking Japanese, Russian and German players.
Requirements are:
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- An excellent understanding of the English language.
- A minimum of 4 months playing EvE-Online.
- A good understanding of EvE mechanics.
- IRC experience is preferred but not completely necessary.
- Good communication skills including good written skills.
A well written application is a huge plus! We do look at other areas as well, but a well written application will greatly increase your chance. Do not apply with trial accounts as they will not be processed.
You can apply by clicking the Volunteer Program button under EVE INSIDER in the menu to your left. If you have already submitted an application please update it. Make sure that you've checked the Bug Hunter [ECAID] choice under question 5 (What area are you interested in volunteering for?).
You can read more about the EVE Volunteer Program (ISD) and EVE Bug Hunter Team (ECAID) in the FAQ and Player Guide.
Our systems rely on you having the correct email in your account details. If you have an old email there that you don't use we will not be able to contact you. Make sure your email is updated under account management! Also, if you have already applied and you haven't heard from us, check if your email spam filter may have blocked our email to you (especially with web-based email systems such as hotmail, yahoo etc.). We make an effort to ensure that every application receives a reply.
It is highly recommended to write your application answers in a word processing program such as MS Word, and copy/past them into the responce box. The application process has a tendency to reset if you take too long writing your answers.
Important: Please dont toggle the "Translation Team" box, only toggle the "Bug Hunter" box on your application form. But state somewhere in the application form that you want to apply as a translator.
If you have any questions regarding the application process, please ask them here.

I would be tempted to say "hey, don't you also need native Romanian speakers", since, you know, Romanian is probably the 4th or 5th demographic (as a language) in EVE, after English, German, Russian and I'm not so sure about French. But I won't say that since I believe it's important to NOT have a localized Romanian version, as it would only encourage Romanian people who can't handle English properly to play EVE... and that's a bad thing, I think. _

I do realise that this is off topic. Just like the Romanian comment I am replying to. So please move both of them into a new thread if you find it necessary.
Dear Akira T, please decrease your arrogance and consider changing your attitude for there are two good reasons to do so.
1. People who do not speak English are not necessarily stupid or less intelligent or less educated or in any other way worse than you. And you are not cooler/smarter/wiser than they. There are a whole lot of reasons NOT to speak English. Imagine someone learnt French/German in school and speaks both languages much better than you speak English, for instance.
2. The majority of non-english players speak English well enough to play the game efficiently but not enough to appreciate the backstory, or mission descriptions, or even small niances of module and ship names. Is it not fun to know that Caldari fly ships with bird and animal names while Amarr fly ships with names of church origin, and how this fits into the culture and history of these nations?
3. People who do speak English fluently may still wish to enjoy the game in their native language. Why not? I would LOVE to hear Aura speaking in Russian. Just for the fun of it :)
So I repeat, please stop being so haughtily ignorant. Thank you.

Well, I don't think you guys need to complain to our poor Bughunters about what language to translate to. The decision where to localize EVE is, as I understand it, based on how many new customers we can get that we wouldn't have without a localized version of EVE in their language. And obv iously that decision is made at CCP and not ny volunteers.
I doubt we'll stop at German, Russan and Japanese though, but all in due time.

Even if slightly off-topic, I'd like to respond to both "Shaddn Arakh" and "CCP Wrangler" in a single (relatively long, sorry) post.
On one hand, you have a need for localisation where people reading/speaking that language are much more likely to (pay to) play EVE. It's not uncommon for Japanese or German people to want to play online games but have less than stellar understanding of English.
It is highly unlikely however for a Romanian to not understand English, as it is one of the most common (95%+) compulsory classes during the mandatory highschool years (and some schools teach English starting from elementary school nowadays, and a lot of kindergartens do it too). Not only that, but most television programs in Romania are subtitled rather than dubbed, so the general population is constantly exposed to the English language wether they want it or not (and we even had huge uproars of public disagreement about the trend to dub English cartoons in Romanian rather than subtitle them). Not being able to at least understand English is therefore usually associated in Romania (at least for the 35-and-below age demographic) with a lack of education, or worse, a lack of intelligence.
Bottom line, not only would a Romanian localisation of EVE be counter-productive (brings almost nothing in terms of extra potential users), but also downright harmful for other... less obvious reasons. _

Romania was part of the Eastern Bloc and therefore the language of the "class enemy" was not tought at school. But I don't think you should blame ppl as uneducated or stupid if they grew up during the cold war. Even in Germany there are a lot of high educated ppl who can't speak english because they grew up in the German Democratic Republic and learned Russian as first foreign language.
I do not consider the localisations contraproductive. It's easier for new players to understand this complex game. However, most of them switched to english after a while because most of the descriptions, fittings etc. are written in english, but for the "noob", a german tutorial is a huge relief and they don't quit frustrated after 14 days. __________________________________________________

Really have no idea where you pulled that from, but English was mandatory, earlier together with Russian, but that changed.

Late-communist Romania was pretty progressive about this, they phased out Russian in favor of English in most schools starting from the late 70's, and in the mid 80's the transition was mostly complete. The secondary foreign language (also mandatory inmost schools) was mostly French, in some cases German. After the "revolution" during winter of '89-'90, there was an even greater push towards teaching English to the general population, going so far as starting to have "English only" groups in schools, especially universities.
Basically, most people born after '75 understand English rather well (and a bit of French, Romanians for some reason really hate speaking French, don't ask me why), a smaller number also German. On the other hand, for those born before that period, it's highly unlikely they know any English at all. ___
On second thought, maybe a partially localized client, with some things translated (tutorials and item/skill descriptions) wouldn't be bad at all. However, some parts should remain untranslated (mainly item/attribute/skill names), so you don't get confused when trying to talk to a non-Romanian.
To be honest, it's quite common over here to mix Romanian and English in common day-to-day usage. _

Thanks for everyone that applied so far, you should hear from us soon. Recruitment is still open.
The discussion about "who likes localizations and who not" ends now. Its a recruitment thread and is left open so you can ask questions regarding the recruitment process.
If you dont like a localized EvE-Client, fine, you dont have to use it.

So, let's ask the most important question - how much do you pay? Because you know, asking someone to play your game and write down all the quirks they find is one thing, but recruiting foreign native speakers with excellent language skills is totally different matter. I would dare and say that if someone has excellent understanding of an English language, chances are he is already a professional translator and that job pays well.
If we're to have translations checked by persons who don't know that you capitalize "I"s in English, we might as well don't have them at all. I don't want to slant anyone, just to point out that you're asking for rare skillset that usually doesn't come cheap.

This is a volunteer position and not a job, so we don't pay a salary. Volunteers get their account paid for though.

Bug Hunters are ISD volunteers, not CCP staff to begin with. ISD is a volunteer program, and we usually recruit people to them, in some cases like now we go so far as to advertise it. Part of it is to replace people who left and part of it is to expand the team.
People can be turned down from ISD for a lot of different reasons like warnings, bans, not being suitable for ISD or the team they applied for etc. We will never take people in simply because we need people if we don't think they are suitable for ISD.
