I tried EVE on my 40" 1080i samsung, looked ok, but was a bit too close to the screen to appreciate it. Was nice to actually have space for the menus. This is what it looked like.

I picked up a 70" Sony XBR2 1080p tv a few months ago (this one). It's not an LCD nor plasma, but I'd say it looks better than either. While I do not use it to play EvE regularly, I tried it just for gigles and I must say it's awe-inspiring. I do watch the occasional EvE video on it, and those that are encoded at high quality look magnificent on it. The EvE Alliance tournament, not so much.
Anyway, the TV the OP mentioned should work fine, as long as you don't use it for extended periods of time. Burn-in is not as much of a problem on the newer sets, but you never know, so I'd rather be safe than sorry. I suggest you run EvE on widescreen, since it'll look amazing (almost like a movie) and the aspect ratio won't look screwey. Anyway, in the end , it all comes down to your own personal opinion; try it, and if you like how it looks, stick with it.

Technically your eyes won't see much difference above 50Hz refresh below that it'll start irritating your eyes. FPS has very little to do with it, its how often the image onscreen is refreshed rather than the rate at which your computer produces a new one. High FPS just giving a smoother movement and such, rather than stuff skipping around. :) If the refresh is 50Hz, that gives you 1s/50= 20ms response time, that might be just a tad low. So perhaps a little ghosting can occur, although i'm by no means an expert.

I have a 7 year old LCD display. It actually has the eve side-bar burnt in on it. Yes that's right, it's an LCD, theoretically they shouldn't get burn in. But hey.

Not true. Most people can see above this. And I myself can see the difference when fps is 75 as opposed to 65. I'm annoyed when I go to the movies and the camara pans more than it can handle. Matrix 2 is an excellent example of this (The burley brawl).

Yep I've seen tests in magazines where they drove Project Gotham Racing with a Xbox360 on a USD14k 52" Pioneer plasma and didn't do it for more than a few minutes because of the risk of burn in on it.
Static pics on plasma = bad, m'kay?
I'm doing Eve on a new E6600/2Gig rack with Asus 8800 and Vista on my 32" LCD@1280X768. These tv's can be bought for abt €700 here in Finland nowadays. Wouldn't go back, especially with the graphics update coming up, not to mention the stupidly great comfort of gaming from the couch.

I dualbox on a 37" Sharp 1080p Gaming panel, and a 22" Samsung LCD.
I love the 37" sharp, the only issue I have is this weird issue sharp panels have with red text, but since I basically never run across red text /shrug.
It's stunning how good the game looks, though I wouldn't recommend trying to use a 720p TV because the resolutions not high enough for me. But that might just be me, and my recently aquired resolution-*****dom.
This post represents the views of me, myself, and I. Nothing said should be attributed to my corp or alliance, otherwise I might be whipped with a strand of wet-spaghetti! |

I tried hooking up the gaming rig to the 42" Toshiba plasma in the living room a few weeks back using a DVI -> HDMI cable, and dragging the dining room table in front of it to use as a desk, lol.
I watched one of the newer HD Eve trailers about 47 times in a row.
And BioShock was... disturbing.
Eve looked great, and it was disheartening to go back to my "small" 21 inch CRT. It's an old Dell Trinitron, with crappy black color and an annoying habit of not keeping the boarders correct when turning on/off or changing resolution (such as alt-tab'ing out of game). And of course it being a CRT, takes up a huge amount of desk space on my modest-sized desk. The keyboard is pretty much crushed against the base of it, and I'm forced to sit closer than I'd like to.
And burn-in is not the issue it once was with newer sets. I know for a fact that our plasma has been left on the same frozen frame for over a day before with no ill effects. Of course if I left it on for a week or more it might have issues, but you don't need to be paranoid about it if you have a decent set. I believe I read somewhere that this Toshiba has an interesting way of dealing with burn in. Something about viberating the image by a few pixels if it's left on the same frame for an extended period? Can't remember, though I've never seen the screen visibly "vibrate", lol.
But I purchased the plasma because it was a great price at the time, easily wall mounted, has great response times (720p), excellent black depth, and a long panel life (20 years I believe before it's half-bright with this set?). Also has surprisingly decent speaker setup built in.

lets see, your eyes can see about 25 frames a second, that is 40ms per frame. I dare you to find an TFT currently being sold that has a response time over 20ms. The 'ghosting' argument is outdated, please reflame with a new argument... Also, ping has NOTHING to do with your screen, ping is measured in the milliseconds it takes to get from the client to the server and back...
I don't know if anyone answered this later in a post, but I just wanted to point out that the actual amount of FPS your eyes can see and/or percieve exceeds that of 25 fps by far, and it's actually not been proven yet where the actual limit is.
The argument goes something like this:
How many frames per second can the human eye see? This is a tricky question. And much confusion about it is related to the fact, that this question is NOT the same as:
How many frames per second do I have to have to make motions look fluid? And it's not the same as
How many frames per second makes the movie stop flickering? And it's not the same as
What is the shortest frame a human eye would notice? ---------- If your screen refreshes at 85Hz and your game runs at 50Hz (=50fps): Are you sure that you don't need to synchronize them? Are you sure, you don't need to play with a multiple of 85 to enjoy synchronized refresh updates? So the game running at 85fps may better than at 100fps. Maybe even a TFT display was better. It displays only with about 40fps but progressively.
Even though single eye cells (rods and cones) may have their limitations due to their chemical reaction times and due to the distance to the brain, you cannot be sure how they interact or complement or synchronize. If 1 cell is able to perceive 10fps, 2 cells may be able to perceive 20fps by complementing one another. So don't confuse "The human eye" with "The cell".
In actuality, as far as the "biological limit" of what our eyes can percieve is undetermined and people seem to have a nag for tagging some arbitrary number onto them, which is something I think is a bad habit of wanting to try and reason your way through "Man vs Technology".

You do know that what you said is completely crap? You need to look into the facts. Our eyes can motion blur 25fps to look like realtime. Our eyes can actually see around 250fps+ in realtime. Don't believe the little fps kiddy gamers that say otherwise.
Bah i just noticed the post above >.<

It takes a lot more than a low response time to make a good panel.

I have the exact same monitor as rotz - and from that pic, you need to hit escape and change it to the correct resolution. Just look for the biggest one available..... then it doesn't get all stretched out like that.

Your eyes can see very photon, your brains ability to register it or discard that which it thinks is rubbish information, is another matter. This is why people refer to shocking or impacting visual stimuli as 'moving in slow motion' as the brain records and registers a great deal more information.
If your brain let everything in - you would probably go insane.
