Ive been thinking here.. can CCP still charge for EvE voice and expect people to pay for it while games like WoW and second life are getting it for free?

Well still, do you really think many people are gonna leave in-game voice as their primary factor for choosing between EVE Online, World of Warcraft, and Second Life? I dunno about y'all, but not in my case....

AFAIK they haven't charged for it to date, and it's getting less and less likely they ever will.
When you can eventually use it out of game, it may actually be really cool.

A competitor doesn't have to follow the same policy with the rest. Because then is a follower and not a competitor.
Also (a personal belief) this game is no competitor to WoW or Second life, the target group has differences than the target group of the others (especially for Second life).

They can do what they want.
And I will continue using ventrilo.
EVE Voice might work, but when you are in a pvp gang, it would be hopeless to assume everyone had EVE Voice and it is thus far simpler and more reliable to use ventrilo/teamspeak.
EVE Voice needs to be free before I would dare depend on it.

EVE is not a competitor to WoW or Second Life, though EVE is arguably within the MMORPG industry it cators to a very specific niche market, which has fewer players.
This sub-market EVE cators too, is vivid when looking at EVE demographics. Second Life might have similar demographics, but certainly not WoW. Second Life is much different in "game play" as it attempts to virtualize the real world... so yes, you do "work" in Second Life. Ironically, it could be argued that the political, industrial and economic models in EVE are more reflective of real life than Second Life Economics. There's an interesting blog on the economics of Second Life, and raises the question of whether it should fall under the jurisdiction of law-enforcement as the exchange of real money happens, yet accountants in Second Life are permitted to outright break virtually any financial law.
EVE can charge for built-in functionality because they don't have pressure from viable competitors.

People are putting too much weight on the usual "But this is EVEz! We be the fanboiz! We adultz!" thing. *waves finger around* For shaaaame!!
Now! Apologies for the logic to follow:
Yes, it would benefit EVE to have a free, built-in voice communication system and perhaps, just perhaps, it will come to it. But it's highly doubtful as there are people who are willing to pay for it. Yes, i'm sad to say, but as long as there's people who are willing to pay for the service, there's no real reason to make it free. As such. Moving along still.
It will take a while to make EVE-voice a working, space-shippy thing. Meaning that it needs to be as working as TS, Ventrilo etc, because people just are hellbent on using those. Mostly because they are used to them. And there within lies the problem;
- People are paying for EVE-voice already. - Those people who don't, use Ventrilo/TS and as they are used to certain level of "quality/options", are not easily moved(up goes the dev costs)
Result? Keep EVE-Voice as a bonus to those who wish to pay for it and develop it to a TS/Ventrilo state when/if ou have time/resources.
Result for users? Some more waiting on this regard, but luckily there are options.

I didn't read most of the posts besides the OP. I will tell you straight up though, I know a little bit about Second Life. I worked on the in game Dell and NASA sims. The grid is much, much, much less stable with the release of the Voice enabled client. No money went into upgrading the hardware which believe me is already dated on the main grid, which is now basically working under twice the load now that Voice is released. With WoW, I can almost guarantee you the same thing will happen. If anyone is worse than Linden Labs about upgrading their hardware, it would have to be Blizzard. If I want to use voice in EVE, I don't mind paying extra for it. At least, from what I have seen in my sixty noobkin days of being on EVE, CCP at least reinvests in their hardware infrastructure. Anyway, back to cybersex in Second Life for me until Scout Drones 5 levels.

Yes. They can. But most Eve players just use TeamSpeak or Ventrilo. Anyway, WoW is a ******** game, and so's Second Life, and if I had to pay to not listen to the freaks in either game, I would gladly, whatever the cost of the in-game voice. -

I seriously expect that it's going to end up free before the middle of next year. The EVE player base has shown that it won't pay for extras like EVE Voice or EVE TV, which is why the latter is trying to find a way to live off of an advertising model. If CCP wants to keep EVE Voice and have people use it, they're inevitably going to have to make it free. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map: Keeping Down The Clone Business Since 2007AD |

To be fair, with the number of features contained in ccp's "expansions", they're actually fairly tiny compared to your average warcraft content patch. Eve's never really had an expansion pack, and probably can't, given the nature of the game. You can't fundamentally alter the game by adding new areas, eve's systems are fairly standard and soulless, you don't have more levels to add and you don't have any dungeons to raid. Comparing eve's expansions to wow's is like comparing apples to oranges. Comparing eve's expansions to wow's free content patches, however, is something you can do

I disagree with you. There are dungeons to raid galore in this game....you just need to know where to look. Most of Eve though is working with your corpmates to take away others rights to toys in your "area"....where you get to pick that area. There is no comparison to WOW. Now to be on topic, I have yet to try the Eve voice. I am thinking that I will just to see how it works.

Edited by: Thanos Draicon on 26/09/2007 05:31:24 EVE Voice will need to do these things before it gains significant use: Similar quality as Ventrillo/TS An external client so EVE-Voice doesn't crash if the client does Allow for integrated functions with the eve fleet systems (creating channels based on squad/wing/fleet, etc.) Create a corporate or alliance/wide pricing plan that can be paid in ISK OR Be free
If EVE voice can do all that, then I'll be using it.

I dont know whats wrong in this picture, the fact that people say EVE Voice is free (when it isnt at the end of the year, go look at the yearly cost, its equal to a month's worth of EVE), or that comparing EVE voice to WoW/Second Life voice chat and saying EVE Voice sucks. -

EVE voice dont really need to be free for me to use it. But, it needs to be stable, so when you are CTD or lagging out of the game in fleetbattles, the connection continues without interference. Because that is one of the most important things the other services have: No interference with whatever happends to the game itself. I simply dont want EVE voice to CTD with the game in fleetbattles. I will be busy enough getting back to the game and the battle, if I should not start up EVE vocie again too.
But besides that, I am all positive to EVE Voice!

Well i'm 99% sure that people would prefer free content that you have to have, over paid content that is optional.
It's such a pain in games like WoW when friend A has all parts, then all of a sudden friend B comes along and wants to play but doesn't have access to the area you were planning to play in. So you change what you were going to do so they can tag a log then all of a sudden friend C signs on....
And so what if WoW has free voice, i'd rather have a controlled system like Ventrilo where it's a lot easier to block people out (Simply don't give them access to the server). ---------

So, its free then?
Seriously I am glad you confirmed it, because I recall signing up for the "free trial" and still have it, yet have clearly not been charged as I pay for my account in gtc's so couldn't have been charged.
That said, its practicality compared to Ventrillo and Teamspeak is clearly lacking. Someone mentioned about separation from the client, which is a superb point. Vent already provides this. I genuinely see no use for Eve voice, and would be happy to see it removed to free up the already creaking servers. ------------------------------------------

Another advantage is you can use ventrilo rergardless of the game you're playing then if your corp needs you in Eve for something quick they can still get hold of you. ---------
