Top 5 -Death Note -Code Geass -.hack//sighn -Ghost in the Shell -Neon Genesis
I know Neon Geneisis is overhyped and isn't as good as everyone says, but I still liked it enough to be memorable. Asuka in the film rocked, vs 9 Mass produced models was awesome

GITS: SAC 2nd Gig Easily the best thing ever made out of Shirow source material. Good production values, half intelligent plot (political manipulation of terrorist group as part of a coup attempt?), neato elito concepts and mecha.
Cowboy Bebop Samurai Champloo Love the stuff this studio does. Cowboy Bebop movie was especially awesome.
Perfect Blue If David Cronenberg made anime.
Haruhi Yeah. I know. It's a show about nothing. Still love it.

I just remember a few more, I'm not sure if they've already been mentioned.
Laputa: Castle in the Sky Kiki's Delivery Service Porco Rosso NausicaS of the Valley of the Wind
Basically anything by Studio Ghibli. I havn't seen any of the newer Studio Ghibli movies but if they're as good as the earlier ones, go check them out.

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Fist of the North Star yet (it's best to leave any references about the live-action film out of it). It had everything, heads exploding, some bloke who can punch really fast, some more exploding heads, the same bloke kicking a huge guy really fast, the aforementioned huge guy's chest and stomach exploding, and more exploding heads.
As for Ghost In The Shell, I watched the second film and it is an amazing looking piece of work, but when it finished i had to spend the next 2 weeks untieing my brain. That part where they run into the same house 3 times was a complete head-f***, i initially thought i'd fallen asleep and managed to wake up at exactly the same point. =============================================

Death Note - by far the most captivating anime i ever seen Ghost in the Shell - just coz it`s cool and makes you watch more and more Elfen Lied - gorry but fun to watch Ai Yori Aoshi - in the romance genre, funny , sexy and fun to watch.

the ghost in the shell series(1st, 2ng gig, and movie) are easily the best serious animes i've watched, just gotta keep watchin. for comedy FLCL of course; so bloody funny. cowboy bebop/trigun are my favorite action animes, never get old
.hack//sign, Noir, and Infinite Ryvius are also good serious(ish) ones to watch, though i found .hack to be a little *too* slow at times.

I agree with all of the replies in here everything that has been named off are great flicks but my personal favorite and I am surprised no one named it off
Robotech : The Shadow Cronicles..
obtw Robotech : The rise of the Shadow has been announced and will be coming to theaters in 2009. Once you get this Robotech thing in your blood its there to stay... |

the problem with the robotech thing is that it is a slaugtered version of Macross, Mospeda , and another series that I can't remember now.
those 3 series have nothing to do with each other, wich makes it even worse
oh and favorites of mine will and always will be RahXephon, 12 kingdoms, and I'm discovering how great Seirei no Moribito is (like omfg, I'm a sucker for dramatic epics) ---

The TV show is a totally different thing.
The second film is notably er... ponderous. It's pretty in places, but not something I'd actually recommend.

In places? That whole film is a visual treat if nothing else. Story is abit loose but i think its an awesome film. I'm glad there is the series also because if you dont like oshii's style of ghost in the shell the SAC series maybe more your thing. Bought the dark horse manga collection of ghost in the shell. So interesting seeing all the little stories that have been expanded into the films and episodes.
Just started watching Ergo Proxy seems pretty good upto now. Also been watching a few episodes of Desert Punk, pretty funny anime. Check out Stage 6 some people have uploaded some good encodes of animes there.
Appleseed is a good film also; the cgi remake not the OVA. Anyone seen Appleseed Ex Machima? Seen some pictures of Briareos in a tux bit wierd and prada have designed some of Deunans dresses for the film. Hope john woo aint spoiled it.

Fun anecdote: I made the horrible mistake of watching the 2nd Ghost In The Shell movie while under the influence of hallucinogenic substances. That movie just goes on and on and on. And on. And on and on. And on. There are no less than 4 different points at which the movie very well could end, but nooo, gotta keep going. How long was that thing, 3 1/2 hours? I'm sure the looping mansion sequence didn't help much. Nowhere near as good as the first.

2 hours, I believe.
It wasn't particularly long, it was just lacking in plot to tie it all together.

Enh, I've probably been spoiled by the Japanese 60-90 minute movie format.
And true, there was an over-arching plot to the second movie, but it was rather threadbare and barely alluded to.

I would swap lovely complex for Romeo X Juliet and haibane renmei (wtf? slice of life? more like surreal slice of life) for Honey & Clover.
oh and Samurai Champloo is there with Cowboy Bebop.
...and you forgot to add Drama: Seirei no Moribito. ---

I watched it as a kid and started getting back into it again recently. Anyone else want to give their own contenders for best anime ever?
Edit: I recently watched ALL of them since I started in June/July.
Hate to tell you, but that's not especially intense. I recommend you look up these animes if you're looking for intensity: 1. Neon Genesis Evangelion (Especially End of Evangelion...oye ) 2. Helsing 3. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
If those are a bit too hardcore for you, I highly enjoy Naruto, and Bleach is...alright, I suppose. ------------ Whiners - Unite! | Posting and You Tarminic - Forum Warfare Specialist. |
