the part on combat makes me violently ill. this is a space combat game, complex enough already, this dilution is ridiculous. again its the minority whiner group that gets their way, in this case its the WoW infatuated noobs who think the game isnt immersive enough when they've never stepped foot in lowsec and are still driving noob ships.
this game is a strategical rock paper scissors with a multitude of variables, not a WoW clone/fps.

I think mission creep is the term you're hunting for.
Anyone else find it funny that ambulation is basically an engine test for the upcoming White Wolf MMO, which means that we're now actually paying to beta test two games?

Why do fanbois see fit to post this in every ambulation related thread? We're discussing the merits of it. Nobody here realistically thinks that a thread in General Discussion is going to cause the EVE devs to go, "Ah, got it. Appears ambulation's not the bee's knees. Right then, scrap the whole thing."
FYI, the discussion goes like this: Player X lists pros. Player Y lists cons. Player Z then supports X or Y, and potentially refutes the other. At no point in that process is it appropriate to drop a non sequitir about how ambulation is an unstoppable juggernaut.

Hopefully this won't give birth to to some "Second Life" clone destorying the current state of the game.
I'd rather see further developement in remote planetary interaction, terraforming and som sort of onworld economy.
Flying around at planets surfaces will most likely be overkill and we'll face even more and heavy distractions for the former pod/space pilots.
Anywho... my voice doesn't count so whatever.

Edited by: Jinx Barker on 02/10/2007 07:49:10 Edited by: Jinx Barker on 02/10/2007 07:48:01 Ambulation is not taking any resources from the CCP it is being handled through its acquisition of WW.
Ambulation will be instanced, mostly; so, not too many resources will be drained.
Ambulation will provide just that little extra boost to CCP & EVE - most people who do not join the game do so because there is a disconnect between the personality and the body.
Ambulation will not be REQUIRED to play EVE, it will be just an additional form of immersion. Believe it or not, having a "body" does add to the immersion of the game. Being able to spend little time "walking" and spending time with your friends, even in a virtual environment does mean allot to many people.
Actual fighting in the Ambulation will not come for a very, very, very long time, if ever, that was simple "wishful" thinking on the part of CCP and they know it.
What it will do is add a further personalized identification to the members of the community; something which is extremely important in the cookie-cutter world of EVE spaceships. It will provide that additional "anchor" to those in game who are acutely aware of the disjointness of EVE, and how odd it is to have one represented as a "space-ship." Humans are extremely conscious of their own representation, even in virtual environments.
I think Ambulation will add to the ongoing success of EVE in the long run. Even if there will be no fighting within stations, having a corporate HQ/Common Room, or just a version of a pub to spend those long hours being camped in is an excellent idea.

In several respects EvE is a highly complex and advanced MMO, one which I would imagine draws a good percentage of its player base from other MMOs - who 'graduate' to EvE.
I wouldn't be suprised if CCP's market research had indicated that while it was attracting these players, some of those left because, used to identifying with their avatar, they found it much harder in EvE.
In order to maintain EvE it needs a constant flow of 'new blood' and if these new players find the lack of avatar interaction disconcerting then clearly that's something CCP would want to address. Hence 'ambulation'.

Good posts from Jinx and Cailais on the pros. I'm really hoping it'll be well implimented and compliment the existing game.
The biggest con, to me, is that CCP is going to use this as a marketing hook. People will be introduced to the game in-station and so ambulation will potentially be one of their first impressions of the game. If they do it incredibly well, imagine the new pilot's disappointment when he finally hits open space and comes face to face with one or more of the glaring problems, the substandard mechanical implimentations, or the everyday commonplace borderline-griefing that is encouraged around here. If they muck up ambulation, Hypothetical Noob may never even make it to the undock part. Couple that with the eventual WoW implosion and the big number of newly minted MMO players that will flood the general market, and there's a potential to breed a whole helluva lot of new people who vehemently hate EVE.
Remember, the big two draws for new players to EVE are internet-based advertising and word of mouth. So when Billy sees a banner on MMORPG.com for EVE and asks about us on a forum, he'll get pages of, "OMG EVE IS TEH SUXXOR!!11" from the fresh new crop of malcontents. Ambulation has the very real potential to cost our playerbase new targe... I mean potentially valuable allies.

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 02/10/2007 12:08:33 It has a lot of potential. I like especially the part in the dev block, where it says that they want the 'station life' to fit to the backstory of EVE as much as possible. I think more immersion, more rp elements are good and more in character thinking is good.
What attracted me in the beginning was the immersion, imagining your are a space pilot in a new universe. Freelancers, pirates, corps, all those possibilities. It felt so real. Over the months/years that imagination got lost a bit for me and EVE has become more like a typical game that you try to beat, where you try to be successful somehow, without caring too much about the backstory.
It's a bit of a pity, because it also has an impact on eve politics, how wars are lead and on how 'nice' people play. A lot of that BS that is written between enemies noadays like in CAOD happens probably, because they just think about winning in some strategy/pvp game and don't have the positive feeling anymore, when the really felt like a pilot exporing a virtual world and meeting other pilots.
Maybe ambulation helps to get some of us a bit back on track, away from the 'personal' grudges, the my epeen is bigger than yours attitude, back to just enjoying eve as an immersive space game with back story.
edit: I'd like to meet my friends and enemies in person/avatar on a station. ___________ I've never been so serious as I am now. No, really. |

I guess you would be fine with some green blimps on a grid representing the ship you are flying. Fine, you don't like imersion, to be sucked in a game-world and feel like you live in that world. Ambulation is one further step in that direction. To give the players something more to identify with other then a spaceship. An entity that represent YOU in the game and not only the vessel you fly.

So what is your actual point again? All i can tell is that you're apparently violently ill when confronted with the idea that combat may take place in ambulation as some point in the far future.
Dude, if this is enough to make you physically sick, you need to step away from your computer, unsubscribe from EVE for a month, and go outside. Maybe get a girlfriend. Or a hobby...something. ---------------

I could care less about walking in stations. However, I would like to see some combat come out of it eventually. Namely I'd like to board a ship and take it over instead of just pop it. Making hand to hand combat on ships removes many of the issues with putting combat in stations.

There is a fallacy in your logic. You are ASSUMING that because Eve has thus far been spaceships and pvp, that that is the entire goal and focus of CCP.
I've read the blogs, they specifically state that they imagined these changes back when designing the game, but lacked the resources to make it a reality.
The upcoming changes are needed. You may have adjusted to the idea that you're a pod, but that doesn't mean its good game design to have what is obviously a shortcut to become the be-all and end-all of the game. Stop being so anti-change!
This has nothing to do with WoW by the way. I realise its fun to drop 'WoW' into posts (I love doing it) because eve players have some mental issues with it, but it is about immersion and extension of the player environment. If you love Eve so much, you must love its sandbox design. So what is your problem with reducing yet another artificial wall (you are a ship only!) by letting characters move in another dimension?
You love Eve right? Eve has for years had those chronicles and various other "in character" stuff going on that most of us don't pay attention to, but is still a major part of eve's story and background. How can you then turn around and say, after that has existed for so long, that trying to make this game even more immersive or RPG-like is somehow copying WoW?
Its as stupid as saying that WoW copied Eve when it added airborne combat in burning crusade (bombing runs at halal). Completely not related at all.
Back to your bridge :p

In all honesty after reading that I'm actually interested in ambulation now, IF the level of detail and character interaction described in that blog is achieved it will certainly be breaking new ground in gaming generally not just in MMOs.
I get the impression to from reading that the development of this is being taken hugely seriously and not just a bolt on gizmo to attract new subscribers.

We could also have a justice system where people are sent to court and possibly sent to prison for a few days.
Imaginge committing a crime and and being put in prison for 5 days, you can still log on but you will only see your character chillin in a prison sell.
