What do you think about the status of Eve's economy?
STATEMENT Within the last week, rare mineral prices have dropped dramatically.
CAUSES - Arkonor gives double the megacyte of Bistot. - New stations provide easier access to rare ore. - New stargates reduced jumps to haul rare minerals. - The removal of the security recovery to Concord has forced player pirates to retire.
ISSUES - Eve is centralized on economy. When there is no economy, there is no purpose. - Player pirates are an important moderator. - Lack of conflict? (Instant jumps, midwarps, and logging...)
These are some of my views. Tell me what you think.

EVE Superhighways connecting Yulai to all the home systems (Pator, Luminaire, New Caldari, and Amarr) are the cause of the awful empire space economy.
Thankfully FINALLY we are getting some semblance of 0.0 economy with these new stations. I'd still prefer if the empire space highways were removed, it would open up new opportunities for profit for the newer players to fill supply where others have moved out to 0.0 . . .

Here's what I think:
Megacyte NPC pricing is 4096 Isk/unit. In a player based economy prices are going to fluctuate, however, I do feel that having prices 4-5 times what it was intended to be is a balence problem. It took a long time to bring that balence back into check, and it's been so long people were accustom to making billions and billions selling ore for much more then was initially intended. I still think it will continue to come down, ever so slowly. There are always people that want to sell their ore NOW, so they will undercut current prices to make it happen. Enough people feel that way, the price gets driven down even more.
Even with Megacyte at 8k isk/unit that's still almost 2x what NPC pricing was, which to me tells me that's the intended price of the ore. People are still getting rich 2x as fast as initially intended, which is one of the great things about a player controlled economy.
Another positive is, more people *MAY* be willnig to lose their ship for whatever cause they believe. It might actually start to see people taking on major pirate corps, as the payout of the insurance once again has the potential to fully replace your ship, and some of the modules. The downside is more corps that might have been out in deep space mining Ark and Bistot might re-consider risk vs. gain and opt to return to Empire controlled space to mine low end minerals and purchase their high end stuff. But only time will tell.
I'm sure some or most don't agree w/ my analysis, but feel free to agree or disagree, even flame if you must. I feel it's the stage in the game where things are becoming balenced again.

Edited by: Tituan on 20/02/2004 01:02:28 I wouldn't worry, prices for mega used to be 6-8k so I wouldn't think of it as the market crashing, but rather than the market reverting back to its normal state.
Good news is ship prices are the best they've been at in months.

Funny, really.
The prices for Megacyte have been so ridiculously high for so long that people think 12k per unit is normal, and complain about the market 'crashing' when the prices drops a bit.
The price of megacyte dropping isn't the market 'crashing', it's the market returning to a reasonable state. When Megacyte drops to below NPC price, then I'd start to be worried.

Cheaper minerals = cheaper goods.
Your statment is correct. The cause I would say lies more in the fact that the rare ores were back in full after the castor patch. Now we'll just have to see if it respawns correctly or will run out again :)
Issues...not sure what you mean by "there is no economy, there is no purpose". The economy is as strong as ever in my opinion, and is more based on the playerbase than anything else.
Player pirates, all I have to say about that is Orvolle. They are still doing their best at keeping demand up for cruisers and haulers....and the occasional battleship.
Lack of conflict, don't know. If you want to avoid combat in eve you almost always can. But quite a few seek combat, so it sort of evens out I think.
Late now, so I'm too tired to read my post through....big misstake I know. So take it for what it is :)

When you're talking about pirates as a moderator in the economy I can't help but thinking shooting a frigate or an industrial for that matter with a battleship should leave less spoils.
Having the loot percentage left tied into what ship classes engaged eachother will make an excellent moneysink.

I'm no economics expert, but as I understand it, a proper economy has cycles, yes? If that is the case, then CCP has brilliantly simulated a realistic economy in Eve. A few months back, Mega was so rare and people cried that the game would be ruined due to prices rising as high as...what was it, 22k/unit? Months later, the game is still going strong and we are posting record logon numbers. High mega prices did not ruin the game, nor will low mega prices. The price will soon bottom out, and come back up again.
Try and view this as an opportunity. Set aside a ton of cash and try to predict where the mega price will bottom out. Then buy a whole ton of it. Then put it in a station and forget about it for a few months. When the economy rolls about again, and mega triples (and then some) in price, you'll be set.
I wish that ccp would actually introduce a stock market for the players to play, but in the mean time I make due with the mineral market. It's a lot of fun, and can be quite lucrative...

Average price of a Tempest has dropped by 12M isk in a week.
Megacyte must be flooding into these new stations.
Let's hope zydrine prices return to normal too.

CONCLUSION
Interesting..... and positive.
APPENDIX A
Some people don't remember that once the normal price of Mega was 4096 ISK and Zyd 1024 ISK So the current state of affairs has been abnormal, thus this might be the returning to some sort of a middle ground ( I don't expect rare minerals to drop below 8-10,000 ISK for Mega though, Zyd is still on the rise though, I just did a check and curiously the prices remain 4500+ ISK

The main reason for the crash in prices has been touched on, but not specified, in this thread. Original prices were, as has been said, 1024 for Zyd and 4096 for Mega. That this got out of control was due to the huge demand for building high-end items (mainly BS). Now that everyone that can afford BS has at least 20 in their hangars, and nearly everyone has access to one, the market in BS will begin to slide. This puts pressure on the mins - hey presto !, prices drop. There is actually nothing wrong with this cycle EXCEPT: BS's don't even take fractionally long enough to build - these monsters should need at least a few weeks if not longer. Imho this needs to be addressed asap, so that what little combat does take place has more of an economic and time-based impact....

It's good having mega and zyd prices closer to their npc prices. Ship insurance is calculated using 4096 and 1024 for mega and zyd. Now 100% insurance will pay approx. the real ship price.

Mega has, zyd hasn't.

Removal of security recovery, um, was there ever any security recovery? That said it should be possible to buy off a low sec status, or kill pirates to slowly raise it.
Quote: ISSUES - Eve is centralized on economy. When there is no economy, there is no purpose. - Player pirates are an important moderator. - Lack of conflict? (Instant jumps, midwarps, and logging...)
These are some of my views. Tell me what you think.
Instawarp jumps will not be a problem when people use a few deployable disruptors. As it stands the haulers don't even have an escort anymore, since they consider themselves safe using bookmark jumps. One pirate group at a very busy gate with a deployable disruptor could make an absolute fortune before the haulers realised what was happening, so I'd give it a while before I worried about it.
In truth I think people should warp to within jump range automatically, it'd speed up travel times, and they could still be gate ganked using deployables.
