Edited by: Instant Pain on 14/10/2007 17:57:26 Charity Case û Journal of Instant Pain.
Within real life the concept of charity is a simple and clearly understood social attitude. Those with donate to those without with the aim of delivering an improved existence, a very simple gift can make massive differences to those in need.
About me: I have very recently returned to EVE after an extended break studying, and upon my return other than finding Yulai is no longer the place to be and being scared silly by an enormous killer ship (turned out to be a freighter) I have been taken aback by the advances the game has gone through but also the numbers of people playing! I have spent the first week catching up on the eve changes and the main current events within the playerbase. Then it was onto the old question ôwhat to do now?ö it got me thinking, but not on the usual tracks.
The plan: I wonÆt follow the usual route of mining, trading or pvping to raise ISK, I will try building my full characters skills based upon the donations and charity of others. ôThis is a scamö <- the exact reason I am testing my belief that within EVE the ability to help someone is almost now none existent due to the underhand methods of others! This is no scam, I am not duping anyone, I am not tricking people into giving me ISKà. This whole thing is a test, a means of either proving or disproving my own theory. If people wish to donate ISK to my cause then please do, if you donÆt then I am perfectly fine with that, and think nothing more of it.
The future: I have officially started my cause by sending my ISK of 15k to a fellow pilot in jita, so clearing my wallet totally. Each week .fortnight I will update those interested on my status and exploits within the empire, the people I meet the places I go and the donators that have assisted me. I do also hope to make a venture into 0.0 at some point but after reading the forums it seems most of 0.0 is burning at the moment. Not a good place to be.

Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 14/10/2007 18:04:14 How exactly are you going to "build the character" based on donations?
People can choose what you train?
You forgot one rather large issue from your "this is charity" section, and that is that when people donate, they do it to help someone in need.
You, are not in need. You simply wish to make ISK without an effort, apart from a post on the forums.
Is the only reason for this, to prove that "trust noone" is not valid? If so, then it is hardly a reason to fund someones life.
Infact, if that is the only reason, i'm quite certain this is merely an elaborate way of getting free ISK.
Also, if you wish to take this into a "real life" comparison, would YOU donate money to someone, so they could prove that "world is a nice place afterall". I'm willing to set up a paypal account or some such, for this "experiment".

I am to build the character through the gifts of others, if someone donates a skill ill train it, otherwise if its ISK ill ask for advice of how they want me to spend it.
If i wanted an elaborate method to obtain isk i could have written an IPO or some such and made billions. This is just a "Lets go with the flow kind of method" no plans, since i have no idea how this will develop, if at all.

Only idiots would give to "Charity" in this game. Everyone has equal opportunities. So... not excelling is your fault and your fault only. You don't have "Vietnam", "Drugs", or being laid off as an excuse.

There is little charity to be found in EVE. The only charity that is received is done either as a whim to a random person, or given to a person who deserves it. The only person I know who was given vast amounts of wealth to was Innonimate Nightmare, who earned it through his 0.0 experiment write ups.

Who I understand vanished spontaneously, along with all this vast wealth he was given, and who has been accused of being a big scam artist because of it.

Funny thing about this is that it's actually quite genius.
He can't lose.
If people give him ISK, he wins. If people don't, he can say "I was right".
Small victory, but still

Edited by: Tito Taneki on 14/10/2007 19:20:11 I may donate some isk to someone in need at some point, but not to someone, who says he makes an experiment about if people will donate him enough to live from it. Could make that experiment in RL: I quit my job, because I want to see, if people are still helpfull and donate enough for my living.

It would seem you are at a catch 22 here. I understand your experiment, but with the way EVE is right now, asking for ISK in any way is considered to be a scam. On one hand, I fully believe the gift of charity is strong in EVE, I myself regularly give out ISK to those I feel deserve/need it.
Perhaps I might feel a bit more comfortable if you were to post screen shots of your wallet transactions, so that you may not only show who donated what, but also what it is being spent on. Just a suggestion.
This is really an interesting idea, and yes, you are asking for other people to pay your way in EVE, but in a way you would be offering us a service by entertaining us. I will be keeping an eye on this thread. ----- I've heard shuttles don't tank very well.

I find myself insulted by that comment. I give charity in eve constantly, and many newbs have started their careers with a donation I provided and never expect returned.
Ask eve uni and they'll always have good things to say about me. ______________________________ A Request About Lag Discussion -- Yet another "Edit my sig devs!" request \o/ |

I generally see charity after person A has killed person B, person B is nice about it, doesnt whine and is just a newbie, person A gives person B advice, isk or helps setup person B again.
It might even end up with person B joining person A's corp. Even if they do fight again, its respectful and fun.
I've seen and like this sort of attitude. ----

He was very clear about that you wouldn't get anything in return for any isk donated. How can that be a scam? He said you wouldn't get anything and you didn't get anything. =AFK=

I enjoy this game cause there are rewards but you really need to work for them. There is less of a carebear mentality as in most other mmogs. Not saying that you can't play the game as you wish, just doesn't make sense to me.
I've seen players help out those who are new to the game and even I got both a better ship+isks during my first week of this game. Yet, when the gifts starts to stack up then the game becomes boring. I want to feel that I made my own fortune, not by begging. Maybe it is a personality trait.

This is the lowest of the low. Not only you rely on others to get ISK , but you ask them to decide the future of your character in your place. Basically , you aren't playing the game - just being a puppet slave interfacing with the game to let others toy with you.
Have you no self esteem ?

Edited by: Spenz on 14/10/2007 23:23:06 Sounds interesting. You have someone who lived off nothing to entertain others (innominate, who I hear actually died IRL), someone who has seen it all and has forsaken material wealth to live off skill alone (Vagabond in a stabber), and now we have someone who is going to attempt to live completely off the charity of others.
IMO Instant Pain is taking a pretty big risk. He is a returning player from the pre-Lofty-privateers-bankscam-suicidegankage-gingermagician-BoBgate-Jita era, where trust prevailed much more than it does now. To live off charity in these times is a pretty bold experiment.
But of course you can call it a scam. Welcome to the EVE that we players have shaped just to get the extra edge over others. Honestly I dunno whether to feel proud that the players affected the game so much, or feel disgusted by how BADLY the players have affected the game.
