12. Roger Zelazny: Chronicles of Amber Series, Lord of Light
I would say Amber is more fantasy based. But Lord of light is a great myth scifi crossover. Almost all of his stuff is great in the sense that it mixes fantasy with either modern post modern on scifi ideas. But Amber is very not scifi in my mind.

Wondering why noone mentioned real sci-fi classics (can misstype the names) such as Robert Sheckley Clifford Simack And, if you didn't tried yet - read some russian sci-fi writers. As Nik Perumov, Oleg Divov, Sergey Lukyanenko (I suppose at least some of their books have to be translated to english. I.e. Lukyanenko wrote couple trilogies which are 10/10 for any reader. -------------------------------------------- Just flying to the nearest mall -------------------------------------------- |

No one seems to have mentioned Theodore Sturgeon's "More than Human" - we'll not as I can see. Anything by him is worthy of checking out imho.

If we're going to accept game novels (like Warhammer 40.000's which, in my opinion, are quite under the level of the list) then add:

Edited by: Lardarz B''stard on 01/11/2007 05:43:05 A few of my favourites haven't been mentioned yet:
Aldous Huxley - Brave New World (I keep rereading this over and over) L. Ron Hubbard - Battlefield Earth (120 million x better than the film) George Orwell - 1984 (obvious, but fantastic and disturbing, with a great twist - film does not do it justice) James Blish - Cities in Flight (defines the word "epic")
M. John Harrison - Light Adam Roberts - Salt Frederik Pohl - Gateway
Generally speaking, the Gollancz "SF Masterworks" Series is a very good place to start if you need some inspiration to read something. I've never been disappointed with any of the books on that list.

I read this back in 2005 I think, late year. For a short story it made for very good reading, and just a few weeks ago I was in the middle of a move and came across a few pages I had printed out. All of a sudden I couldn't remember the name of the story or anything about it except I HAD to read it again. I finally found it, downloaded the .pdf and printed it out and re-read it. My dreams haven't been the same since :]

Every year Gardner Dozois releases a awesome short story anthology called "The Year's Best Science Fiction". I believe they are up to 24 now with the 25th one set to be released in July 08. Those are definitely highly recommended. Fitzpatrick's War by Theodore Judson is also a amazing sci-fi book, too bad he hasn't written anything else though.

Agree though great story.
Jack L Chalker - Series that includes Pirates of the Thunder.
Think all of my others have been mentioned but only reading page three atm.
Alan Dean Foster's Aliens has been mentioned but as its rather sub par please add the Flinx in Flux series.
