Edited by: Plague Black on 31/10/2007 10:08:05 1) Arkady and Boris Strugatsky: Just about anything you can get your hands on. My favourite is "Hard to be a God".
2) Stanislav Lem: Fiasco
3) Frederik Pohl: Gateway (I cant believe you left this one out?!? Ah, you can't argue tastes. I know it's mentioned before me but I just need to say it again)
4) David Brin: Kil'n People
Btw Richard Matheson wrote "I am legend". I loved it, very powerfull book.

The Forge of God and Anvil of Stars by Greg Bear.

Peter Hamilton 'The Reality Dysfunction' is the way better than 'The Neutronium Alchemist' and is the first book of that series anyway.
Stephen Baxtor 'Ring'
Greg Bear 'Anvil of Stars'
'The Wasp Factory by Iain M Banks and 'The Stand' by Stephen King aren't sci-fi. 'The Stand' is good though whereas 'The Wasp Factory' is drivel.

E.E. "Doc" Smith - The Lensman Series Inspired aspects of Babylon 5: Psi Corps, Order vs Chaos; Humans kin to other aliens etc... The verbage is a bit dated, written in the 30's and 40's, but it is THE original space opera.
The complete series of books, in internal sequence, consists of:
1. Triplanetary 2. First Lensman 3. Galactic Patrol 4. Gray Lensman 5. Second Stage Lensmen 6. Children of the Lens

Chronicles of Amber is what you're looking for (Nine Princes in Amber, Guns of Avalon, Sign of the Unicorn, Hand of Oberon, Courts of chaos). Ever wondered who Corwin of Amber was? Find out
My reccomendations that aren't on this list:
Joe Haldeman's Forever War. Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun.

James Blish: "Cities in Flight"
The technology looks a little dated now, not surprising since it's 70 or 80 years old, but the proposition is original as ever.
More politics and personalities than spaceships and ray guns but well worth reading. A series that literally ends with a bang
And "seconded" to anything by C J Cherryh

Add "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" for Heinlein.
E.E. Doc Smith, Space Hounds of IPC (a book I read as a kid and I still remember it, would probably think it was crap now)
And I can't believe nobody has yet mentioned the Stainless Steel Rat stories by Harry Harrison

Question of morality. Here in my country the SF era is kind of gone,no one is publishing SF books anymore. I am SF fan and I do own more then 350 SF books, which I gathered in 12 years (me and my bro)
I see a lot of books which I didn't read and I feel the urge to get them. Now the question, is it horribly wrong to download them from the net, like for free? :(

I would argue against anything that involves Michael Crichton in sci-fi.
If anything, Crichton is one of the most sci-fi authors on the list. Many there are space-opera, and in some cases pure fantasy.

And do yourself and everyone else a favour and get rid of anything that hack Orson Scott Tard writes.
Horrible, soulless little fart of a book, was like reading your friends English creative writing story.
