Note: This belongs in OOP.
I would argue against anything that involves Michael Crichton in sci-fi. But the rest of your list is excellent.
I would add, and am amazingly surprised that it lacks:
Hamilton's Night's Dawn and later works. Plus Reynold's Revelation Space.
Then there's Simmons' Ilium and Olympos.
I also don't know what you mean by Heinlein's Robot Series.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

Vernor Vinge: A Fire Upon the Deep --//-- : A Deepness in the Sky
both are quite a lot better than The Peace War and Marooned in Realtime (which two is what you are referring to with your nro 9)
Definetly don't miss the previously mentioned books by Ian M Banks and Ender's. Hyperion series might be a bit too Deus ex Machina with the ending though..
Frederik Pohl: Gateway (you might want to check out the whole of Heechee series though), The Space Merchants and The Merchants' War, Plusman
Robert Heinlein: Starship Troopers (if you can handle his pretty fascist views, you might want to check out some other of his works)
Norman Spinrad: Deus Ex
Harry Harrison: Stainless Steel Rat series - humoristic, better than the Bill series of his, IMHO.
Arkady & Boris Strugatski: Stalker, Escape Attempt, The Kid from Hell and Definetly Maybe, Hard to Be God
Walter M. Miller Jr: A Canticle for Leibowitz

Peter Hamilton 'The Reality Dysfunction' is the way better than 'The Neutronium Alchemist' and is the first book of that series anyway.
Stephen Baxtor 'Ring'
Greg Bear 'Anvil of Stars'
'The Wasp Factory by Iain M Banks and 'The Stand' by Stephen King aren't sci-fi. 'The Stand' is good though whereas 'The Wasp Factory' is drivel.

E.E. "Doc" Smith - The Lensman Series Inspired aspects of Babylon 5: Psi Corps, Order vs Chaos; Humans kin to other aliens etc... The verbage is a bit dated, written in the 30's and 40's, but it is THE original space opera.
The complete series of books, in internal sequence, consists of:
1. Triplanetary 2. First Lensman 3. Galactic Patrol 4. Gray Lensman 5. Second Stage Lensmen 6. Children of the Lens

The technology looks a little dated now, not surprising since it's 70 or 80 years old, but the proposition is original as ever.

I have to disagree. Enders game is really good and deserves full recognition.
At the moment I am reading the third book in the series (Xenocide) and it is decent (like its predecessor Speaker of the dead). Both are a significant step down from the original though. ---

As somebody (Avon?) said further up, a lot of this depends on what you consider to be sci-fi, a lot of it would strictly be considered space opera and fantasy works, but i read all that kind of stuff so here a few more.
Michael Moorcock - Dancers At The End Of Time.
Kurt Vonnegut - Sirens of Titan Cats Cradle Slaughterhouse 5
Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash The Diamond Age
John Brunner - Stand On Zanzibar The Sheep Look Up
Alfred Bester - The Starts My Destination The Demolished Man
Michael Marshall Smith - Only Forward Spares
Especially Bester and MM Smith, all 4 of those books are some of the best that i've ever read. Smith gets extra points for the quality use of cats in both books :D
3 points on the Op's list 1. Heinleins on there twice and he diddnt write a 'robot' series. Your probably thinking of Asimov. 2. I Am Legend was written by Richard Matheson. He also wrote The Shrinking Man, and im reading that one right now :P 3. Roger Zelazny wrote a lot of books, but sci-fi wise the one i remember most is Lord Of Light. Sig->
Good isnt it.

What no John Wyndham so far???
This may be the place to find the author of a set of books I enjoyed back in the late 1980s.
They were in a setting that was very much like the 'Elite' PC game or the 'Travellar' RPG. The central character was a trader with cybernetic modifications and could drop into an enhanced 'combat mode' for a few seconds, complete with UV vision and fangs. There were at least three books in the series ( i think he was hunting some half forgotten ancient alien tech) but I cannot remember titles or author. They were nothing heavy but very enjoyable space opera.
For something heavy and most enjoyable, can I recomend anything by Ian Watson. 'The embedding' and 'Miracle visitors' are both stupidly clever books and expertly written ( and Mssr Watson is a thoroughly nice chap in person too...)
any help with the mystery would be much appreciated

Also where do you draw the line with "sci-fi" ? many books might be set in space somewhat incidentally but have nothing to do with science, and more to do with psycology or human nature. Does that make them non sci-fi or does that make psycological thrillers fall into the sci-fi genre?

Aldous Huxley - Brave New World (I keep rereading this over and over) L. Ron Hubbard - Battlefield Earth (120 million x better than the film) George Orwell - 1984 (obvious, but fantastic and disturbing, with a great twist - film does not do it justice) James Blish - Cities in Flight (defines the word "epic")
M. John Harrison - Light Adam Roberts - Salt Frederik Pohl - Gateway
Generally speaking, the Gollancz "SF Masterworks" Series is a very good place to start if you need some inspiration to read something. I've never been disappointed with any of the books on that list.

In fact everyone who was planning on trying to gank me this week drop those plans and go read some Stephenson instead.

Matthew Stover: Traitor
If you're into Star Wars you'll love it. It's part of the New Jedi Order series, which starts a few years after Episode 6. An alien race from another galaxy is invading - they use biotechnology exclusively (their weapons, their armors, even their spaceships are bio-engineered organisms) and perform self mutilation to come close to their gods. And strangely enough, they appear to be non-existent in the Force...
