Ships having a max speed actually makes sense. The absolute maximum speed attainable in a vacuum is twice the velocity of the exhaust. That assumes the only mass being accelerated is the fuel and that no other forces are in action.

Or you can look at it the other way: would you use a rolled-up newspaper or a sledgehammer to kill a fly?
While it might be challenging to hit said fly with a sledgehammer (tracking, which is not a problem with a guided missile), the fly is equally dead in the end.
I know it's done for game balance reasons, but IRL, when you hit a frigate with a battleship gun, you're left with flotsam. At best. Same thing when you hit a VW bug with a Stinger missile. Or a cardboard box with a JDAM.

Wrong. A Kilogram of Antimatter completely 100% yielded gives an output of 64 Megatons. A 175mm shell weighing around as much as a tank round will only be in the gigatons. Nowhere near enough to 'tear' earth apart, which requires a ****load to overcome gravitational binding energy. ~~~

I'm sure thats not right, as there will always be a resultant force caused by ejecting mass from the back of the rocket even if you were only throwing drinks cans out the back by hand you would still excert a force on the ship equal to the force which you excerted on the ejected mass.
(either that or I REALLY missed something when i was doing my physics degree and if so please enlighten me as to why)
Proof here
Of course the real speed limits in space are due to relativity at which point the force required to accelerate you goes up due to your mass increasing...

Why do people keep saying this as if its lunacy? Like being in a vacuum somehow grants an object the ability to travel at speeds greater than the amount of thrust its engines have. Ship in Eve space have a maximum speed, just like ships in real life do. The only advantage being in a vacuum gives is greater acceleration.
In space, if you accelerate and then stop without braking, you keep going at that speed. thus in space, you can go as fast as you want by continuously accelerating.
In space, you don't have a max speed except based on how much deltaV your engine has (thrust and fuel considerations). If I keep pushing an engine for a lengthy enough time at a high enough rate, it will eventually get to near the speed of light. A ship's survival of course, may be questionable unless the object is very heavilly shielded against particulate radiation and micrometeorites moving at relativistic speeds. ~~~

There's no limit. As long as you are thrusting, you are accellerating. Only if your engine is too weak, it may take a long time to get a high scalar speed... ~~~

That one's down to the proximity of the explosion. The "blast radius" of a missile's explosion actually represents how close it is to the target ship when it explodes. With no concussive force in a vacuum (no air, no concussion) the detonation is pretty much pure energy (or, in the case of kinetic missiles, a short-lived black hole) the proximity to the center of the blast becomes important, as an energy discharge in vacuum follows the inverse square law - double the distance, half the energy.
The larger an object is, and the closer it is to the center of the detonation, the more energy it will absorb. Frigates are typically small and nimble, and thus missiles have difficulty exploding in close proximity to them. Their small surface area coupled with their (relatively) long distance from the explosion's epicenter means that frigates will absorb less of the explosion's energy than they otherwise would.
Smaller, lighter missiles have the speed and guidance systems to get right up close on a frigate or even hit it, whereas cruise missiles are too heavy and ponderous to score an actual impact, and thus have to settle for going off at the closest point of approach.
to follow your torpedo/rowboat example, what's really happening is that the torpedo's going off somewhere near the rowboat, but has not actually hit it because the rowboat's too small a target to actually hit easily. If the torpedo hits, then yeah that rowboat is now matchsticks, but if it goes off twenty meters off to the right and at a depth of ten meters, then the boat's might well survive, albeit rocked and damaged.
All of which is just a roundabout way of justifying a very sensible game mechanic that was initially brought in to counter the fact that missiles previously DID do all their damage to all ships regardless of size, and that this was horribly overpowered. - The game is not the problem. The problem is that you are not adapting to the game.

Right. Not all the antiamtter will react with matter properly either. Much will be scattered and wasted, instead of reacting with focus at the target. Also, at most, 50% of the energy will hit the target, and the other 50% will be radiated out in space. Since hitting a flat surface means half the 'sphere' goes outwards. ~~~

For sure it will hold it's energy and velocity but the accuracy of your tracking system will fail for to fast or to far away objects. Tracking = combination of flexebility of the turrets + calculation of the aproximated taget movement combined with your movement parameters. So normaly if a smart pilot changes his flight direction very fast and very often with randomly generated changes no tracking system should ever be posible to track him ;).

"The Chimera's design is based upon the Kairiola, a vessel holding tremendous historical significance for the Caldari. Initially a water freighter, the Kairiola was refitted in the days of the Gallente-Caldari war to act as a fighter carrier during the orbital bombardment of Caldari Prime.
It was most famously flown by the legendary Admiral Yakia Tovil-Toba directly into Gallente Prime's atmosphere, where it fragmented and struck several key locations on the planet. This event, where the good Admiral gave his life, marked the culmination of a week's concentrated campaign of distraction which enabled the Caldari to evacuate their people from their besieged home planet. Where the Chimera roams, the Caldari remember."
