Just thought i'd start a "Useless facts" thread about EVE, be it about names, things, situations, modules, battles, whatnot(an eggnog variant) and all in between.
I'll start with a little snippet:
Caracal is a desert living predator of the cat family, akin in looks to the Lynx. It is, rightfully, named Desert Lynx. Other names are Persian Lynx or African Lynx.
Now how that fits a missile launching, shield tanking frigate, who knows
My opinions represent the opinions of my corporation completely. I'm the CEO damnit. |

Well, it doesn't, does it? 'cos it's a missile launching, shield tanking cruiser
On a similar note, the Cerberus is a three-headed dog of Greek mythology that guarded the underworld, allowing all to enter but none to leave. Again, doesn't really match up... but who cares about accurate links, so long as the name is cool? ^^

Most probably already know this, but every time you fire a heavy missile, you're firing the equivalent of a modern day nuclear missile?
ACs are basically rapid-fire modern-day tank cannons.
The smallest frigates are around the size of a Boeing 747 commercial airliner.

For all those people who say bumping is an unintended game mechanic :
The Armageddon class battleship was solely designed to be used as a battering ram, hence it's shape.
It's massive front armor plating and it's overall heaviness at it's front end, coupled with high structural integrity was intented to be used to slam into Republic vessels and breach their hulls while firing on them.
For lovers of the Chimera :
It's design is based around a water carrier called the Kairiola, which was refitted during the Gallente-Caldari war to act as a fighter and troop carrier.
The original vessel was flown into the atmosphere of Gallente prime by Yakia Tovil-Toba during the war, effectivly turning it into a meteor and obliterating part of a city. A strike so direct to the Federation left a week long window to evacuate Caldari from their homeworld without Gallente response.
hmm... i'll see if I can think of more...

1. The Rifter is almost the exact length and height as a 747.
2. Jita wasn't always busy.
3. Zydrine used to be expensive.
4. All or most of your T2 blueprints were developed as a joint venture between Caldari and Gallente researchers in Crielere. When the Guristas attacked the station, the researchers were kidnapped and held for ransom. Their bodies were later discovered.
5. A group called Immensea built most if not all of the gates and conquerable stations in 0.0. Not much is known about the situation. It's been hundreds of years.
6. Ships are either crewed or Capsule+crew with variants for both.
7. Several Caldari corporations have been involved in major market scandals. Gallente are not immune either-- Quafe and a special dietary supplement for Gallente school children are ACTUALLY MADE FROM GARBAGE.
8. Sansha went missing years ago. No one knows if he's actually dead. He had his ships designed to resemble something seen in his nightmares. Ghost stories are told to empire children and there is a mythology around the design of those ships (which I think are beautiful. I always liked Geiger)
9. Minmatar ships actually use a new eden version of duct tape. Most of the ship designs date back to the war- Many of the slaves stole nuts and bolts and a few materials and eventually came up with a fleet of working frigates.
10. Mathematically speaking- If you're in the engine room of a Minnie ship, you've already surpassed the safe level of radiation a human can be exposed to.
11. depleted uranium SHOULD be doing more damage than carbonized lead. It's about 4 times heavier and has a tendency to flare and become molten when hitting metal.
12. The actual output explosion of a 175mm antimatter round would be more than the amount of destructive power needed to tear Earth in half.
13. I could go on!!!!!!!

It's potent stuff. A gram of antimatter is enough to launch 1,000 space shuttles into orbit (so a gram could have orbited every space mission so far and still have plenty left over).

Of course, this depends on how much antimatter each round contains, and how efficiently you can detonate it. If some of the antimatter gets thrown into space, it'll just persist until it meets some actual matter.

Abaddon (Hebrew אבדון Avaddon, meaning "destruction"). In Biblical poetry (Job 26:6; Proverbs 15:11), it comes to mean "place of destruction", or the realm of the dead, and is associated with Sheol. Abaddon is also one of the compartments of Gehenna.[1] By extension, it can mean an underworld abode of lost souls, or hell.
In Revelation 9:11, it is personified as Abaddon, "Angel of the Abyss",[1] rendered in Greek as Apollyon; and he is described as king of the locusts which rose at the sounding of the fifth trumpet. In like manner, in Rev. vi. 8, Hades is personified following after death to conquer the fourth part of the earth.
Abaddon is one of the infernal names used in LaVeyan Satanism, and is first in the listùonly as it comes first alphabeticallyùand means "the destroyer."

The only way to pacify a Whine is with constant reassurance that everything will be okay. If it does not have this for even a minute, it starts throwing a fit, screaming and kicking things.
This animal has been put on the UNs Protected Species list, for the sole purpose that no one wants to have to put up with listening to it. Methods of pacifying it have included taped responses, and a large padded, soundproof room, where it can scream itself to death.
Despite being on the Protected Species list, Whine hunting season opens every day on April 25th, where the town of Weehawken, New Jersey has a famous opening day celebration, until closing day on September 3rd.

They were never called unit. It is my belief that fools carried unit over from Reactor Control Unit and applied it to Power Diagnostic and Ballistic Control because they themselves referred to them as "units" where they meant to say "module." I refer you to this 2003 post where Power Diagnostic SYSTEM is referred to and no one mentions UNIT at all.
It will take a screenshot of the past and a ccp employee of the past to change my opinion. Only then is the proof exactly what it should be. I see absolutely no reason why CCP would change something from unit to module especially at that point in the game. ---

There never used to be Battlecruiser or Destroyer rats in the universe. They were added and bounties on rats were upped just a bit.

Most of the energy from proton/anti-proton annihilation is released as neutrinos, which interact VERY weakly with most other forms of matter and are generally harmless.

The reason the superhighways were disassembled was because if you traveled from one end of the galaxy to the other on them you were getting close to the speed of light and time was slowing down for you... this reduced the wear and tear on clones and they were needing less frequent replacement.
Through back room dealings and payoffs the companies making Isk from clones and their upkeep had the superhighways taken down to decrease clone life expectancy.

The quad 3,400mm siege artillery guns should really shoot 4 shells roughly 100 m^3 each in size... yet EMP XL takes up 0.25 m^3.
My calculations are a bit arbitrary, they assume that shells are cylinders, length 3x diameter (and I assume 3,400mm means diameter). (1.7m)^2 * 3.14 * 10 ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

I think there was some minor nugget of backstory somewhere that states that the warp drive exerts a drag effect, relative to the nearest major gravity well. Hence, all ships require constant thrust and have a maximum speed because their warp engines are constantly trying to drag them to a dead stop - a downside that is kind of the trade-off for being able to fly faster than light.
Originally by: Admiral Annihilation - Every time you turn your battleship thousands of people get squished against the wall/floor with a G-force between 100 and 300 g's.
Or rather, they would if the ships weren't fitted with inertial compensation systems. Otherwise, warping would be impossible. - The game is not the problem. The problem is that you are not adapting to the game.

So, if ships are slowed down by thier Warp drives, then why do missles have a maximum velocity? You could suppose that missles are givin an intial velocity by the launcher, and have no ability to accelerate on thier own. But they wouldnt be able to change directions if thats the case.
More importantly, why do the stations never orbit? Everytime I go into a station, its in the same position.

Caracal is a desert living predator of the cat family, akin in looks to the Lynx. It is, rightfully, named Desert Lynx. Other names are Persian Lynx or African Lynx.
Now how that fits a missile launching, shield tanking cruiser(cough...silly me), who knows
The Caracal is a renowned catcher of birds so it sort of fits into the Caldari naming scheme (generally birds) - especially if you think of how effective it as an anti-frigate platform.
The Gallente ships tend to be named after gods.

In space, if you accelerate and then stop without braking, you keep going at that speed. thus in space, you can go as fast as you want by continuously accelerating.

While it might be challenging to hit said fly with a sledgehammer (tracking, which is not a problem with a guided missile), the fly is equally dead in the end.
I know it's done for game balance reasons, but IRL, when you hit a frigate with a battleship gun, you're left with flotsam. At best. Same thing when you hit a VW bug with a Stinger missile. Or a cardboard box with a JDAM.

I'm sure thats not right, as there will always be a resultant force caused by ejecting mass from the back of the rocket even if you were only throwing drinks cans out the back by hand you would still excert a force on the ship equal to the force which you excerted on the ejected mass.
(either that or I REALLY missed something when i was doing my physics degree and if so please enlighten me as to why)
Proof here
Of course the real speed limits in space are due to relativity at which point the force required to accelerate you goes up due to your mass increasing...

In space, you don't have a max speed except based on how much deltaV your engine has (thrust and fuel considerations). If I keep pushing an engine for a lengthy enough time at a high enough rate, it will eventually get to near the speed of light. A ship's survival of course, may be questionable unless the object is very heavilly shielded against particulate radiation and micrometeorites moving at relativistic speeds. ~~~

That one's down to the proximity of the explosion. The "blast radius" of a missile's explosion actually represents how close it is to the target ship when it explodes. With no concussive force in a vacuum (no air, no concussion) the detonation is pretty much pure energy (or, in the case of kinetic missiles, a short-lived black hole) the proximity to the center of the blast becomes important, as an energy discharge in vacuum follows the inverse square law - double the distance, half the energy.
The larger an object is, and the closer it is to the center of the detonation, the more energy it will absorb. Frigates are typically small and nimble, and thus missiles have difficulty exploding in close proximity to them. Their small surface area coupled with their (relatively) long distance from the explosion's epicenter means that frigates will absorb less of the explosion's energy than they otherwise would.
Smaller, lighter missiles have the speed and guidance systems to get right up close on a frigate or even hit it, whereas cruise missiles are too heavy and ponderous to score an actual impact, and thus have to settle for going off at the closest point of approach.
to follow your torpedo/rowboat example, what's really happening is that the torpedo's going off somewhere near the rowboat, but has not actually hit it because the rowboat's too small a target to actually hit easily. If the torpedo hits, then yeah that rowboat is now matchsticks, but if it goes off twenty meters off to the right and at a depth of ten meters, then the boat's might well survive, albeit rocked and damaged.
All of which is just a roundabout way of justifying a very sensible game mechanic that was initially brought in to counter the fact that missiles previously DID do all their damage to all ships regardless of size, and that this was horribly overpowered. - The game is not the problem. The problem is that you are not adapting to the game.

Right. Not all the antiamtter will react with matter properly either. Much will be scattered and wasted, instead of reacting with focus at the target. Also, at most, 50% of the energy will hit the target, and the other 50% will be radiated out in space. Since hitting a flat surface means half the 'sphere' goes outwards. ~~~

For sure it will hold it's energy and velocity but the accuracy of your tracking system will fail for to fast or to far away objects. Tracking = combination of flexebility of the turrets + calculation of the aproximated taget movement combined with your movement parameters. So normaly if a smart pilot changes his flight direction very fast and very often with randomly generated changes no tracking system should ever be posible to track him ;).
It's like in bad movies where somebody shots with an UZI while driving with one hand at 200km/h and hitting the wheel of the following car == IMPOSIBLE except very very VERY much lucky hits

The Mackinaw is an actuall Coast Guard Cutter in the Detroit, MI area. It's and ice breaker (and amongst boaters, quite famous) used to keep the freighter channels clear in the great lakes once winter hits.
I'd actually be interested if this was just an amazing coincidence or if CCP knew that and thus named the Ice Exhumer after it....

Wow I've wanted to know whether or not that carrier was Chimera-like for ages! Reading the chronicles it only mentions that it's a carrier. Are there any references you have that I can read? I'd really like to know more about the pre-capsuleer hulls of the ships used during that war...
"The Chimera's design is based upon the Kairiola, a vessel holding tremendous historical significance for the Caldari. Initially a water freighter, the Kairiola was refitted in the days of the Gallente-Caldari war to act as a fighter carrier during the orbital bombardment of Caldari Prime.
It was most famously flown by the legendary Admiral Yakia Tovil-Toba directly into Gallente Prime's atmosphere, where it fragmented and struck several key locations on the planet. This event, where the good Admiral gave his life, marked the culmination of a week's concentrated campaign of distraction which enabled the Caldari to evacuate their people from their besieged home planet. Where the Chimera roams, the Caldari remember."

The Apocalypse was named after a catastrophic event that signalled the destruction of the world. This was usually preceeded by the appearance of the four horsemen.
However, due to the ship being fitted with pathetically weak energy weapons, the Apocalypse no longer lives up to its name.

Very true. As long as there is an oxidant and fuel, and enough heat provided by said explosions, fire will burn merrily in space. Maintaining the combusion before the oxidants and fuel freeze, however, is the problem. Luckily the thrust/radiants of our ships provide heat and then some to spare. Also, since Eve ships use gravitation manipulation, maintaining a compression ratio sufficient to keep the reactive elements contained under pressure they will also burn well.

In space, if you accelerate and then stop without braking, you keep going at that speed. thus in space, you can go as fast as you want by continuously accelerating.
Being in a vacuum does not grant endless acceleration. It provides a faster rate of acceleration sure, but it does not grant an object the ability to go faster than the propellent being tossed out its rear. Once an object is going as fast forward as the propellant is going out the rear of the ship, it will no longer accelerate. Equal and opposite reactions and all that.
For a ship to have endless acceleration and therefore an unlimited topspeed, it would have to have an unlimited amount of force to exert on the ship.

Top speed is limited by the speed of light... as you get closer to the speed of light time slows down... and time "Stopps" for you at the speed of light.
Shovel fuel into the engines... the closer to the speed of light.. the slower you can shovel due to time slowing down.

as a native greek, i cannot confirm the mega-therion theory, as the word Megatherion is not found anywhere shortened. Megathron actually means nothing in greek as far as i am aware. Also "great throne" (Megas Thronos in contemporary greek) means absolutely nothing other than a big chair for kings. But it is a good idea; can we get some orbitting stations/moons/belts in the near or far future? Cause that'd be cool.

There is drag in space as it is not a true vacuum so the whole arguement is moot. In fact, the average local particle density in space is likely greater than sufficient to provide ample friction to prevent any ship (that is not aerodynamic in some currently unknown fashion) from being able to achieve a relativistic velocity.
That being said, while I have done zero math, I believe that the current max speeds of ships in EVE is far lower than than the sorts of speed you would need to achieve to see this effect (I also don't know off hand what the values for friction in space are (or if they can even be calculated accurately)), also, CCP could simply argue that shields somehow negate (on increase) frictional forces.
Also, what someone said about the gravitational effect of warp engies (drag on other gravitational bodies or some such) would make sense, but then we would see a varying effect based on proximity to a gravity well. Not much to add, except maybe the maximum velocity on ships is limited by the computer systems to give the ship more control over it's orbit range? A ship doing 100 km/s would be a pain in the ass to orbit another ship at close distances.
And the reason that ships orbiting other ships have problems with tracking, maybe it's because the other ship is moving too, hence the problem with tracking as your ship has to constantly shift toward and away from the other ship? ____________________

First of all, ramming is not the same as bumping. Ramming is done to do massive damage to a ship and does not exist in Eve. Bumping does no damage, but keeps ships from escaping by making it change course against its will.
Second, "it's" means "it is". "Its" means "belonging to it".

I believe when warping a wormhole is created. A wormhole is basically 2 points in space that are 'moved' together to travel between them.
Take a piece of paper and put a dot on each end of the paper. One of them is Point A, the other is Point B. A wormhole simply takes point A and point B and pushes them together, just like folding the paper and touching the dots. You don't actually travel the full distance, you simply 'jump' to the other side. The effect from warping is probably just what you see as you go through one side and out the other, although technically it would be like stepping through a doorway.
I'm probably wrong, so please correct me if I am. ____________________

Jumping is done through artificial wormholes, which explains why it's instant. This is backed up in official Eve sources. I dunno about warping, though, since it's done at a certain speed and takes time to get where you're going.

It's also been accelerating using planetary bodies for years and doesn't have to stop to execute complex maneuvers. However, you're right that it's purely an artifact of game balance that our ships reach their maximum velocities so fast.
Try landing a carrier inside a moon, and you'll see what EVE's, ah, "gravity", will do. I recall we had a carrier land on grid at the center of the moon, and it was thrown out of the moon at...well, it was a Vagabond pilot's wet dream.

The Amarr race is named after the ancient Egyptian city Amarna.
Here's the story behind Amarna: Around 1350 BC a pharaoh by the name of Amenhotep IV, whom later renamed himself Akhenaten, ascended to power. During his reign he attempted to convert Egypt's population to his chosen, and notably monotheistic, religion. The single god under this religion was known as Aten, and was represented by a sun disk. Akhenaten's reforms are the first case of monotheism in recorded history. During his reign Akhenaten establish the new Egyptian capital in the city of Amarna, where many temples dedicated to Aten were built.
So there you have it Amarr = Amarna, the city in which the first temples dedicated to a monotheistic deity were constructed.

Not true, it does however prevent you from using your mwd. (natural phenomena are disrupting this module's operation.)

Edited by: Red Crown on 18/11/2007 17:09:26 Carriers are flying physical impossibilities.
Take the Chimera for example. All carriers are roughly the size of a battleship. The Hyperion is the closest in shape though.
The Chimera has ten times the mass as the Hyperion does, yet is the same size to the eye, and until only recently was actually smaller.
The Chimera also has ten times the volume of a Hyperion.
So in other words, the Chimera has 10 times the internal volume it can physically have, and even though it is impossibly large on the inside, it is also impossibly dense. Its "outer shell" would have to be as dense as a Neutron star.
In theory, Railgun shells, Projectiles, and Missiles should have no damage fall off with range, and missiles should get faster as they go. They should also have no maximum range.
Gallente aren't just overpowered, they in theory have the most powerful weapons of any race. The force released by a 1000MM Antimatter shell would be enough to snap a Titan in two.
The force of a 3500MM shell impact would be enough to liquify steel.

The propellant used in projectile weapons is actually fissile material.
Yes, that means that the projectiles are propelled by nuclear weapons.

I used to be able to see my drones... then I could not....lately I have again. I though it was because I changed my screen resolution in eve. But now that I can see them again...whats the dealio? You know when I select look at.
They broke it but fixed it not that long ago with the camera changes.

There is 1 named system in Providence: Shintaht
Unefsih is clearly a typo, and should read (and is often mistakenly called) unefish
Rilera system in Khanid is apparently named in reference to something in a HP Lovecraft novel. Still trying to confirm this
