In most (all?) other MMORPG's out there, you actually have to be logged on in order to gain skills. If a skill takes 2 weeks, you need 2 weeks game time to get the skill.
In eve, you don't have to do anything to get a skill except to train it and wait. To compensate for this, there are many more skills and many more paths for you to take.
I have corp mates who are over a year old who don't have the skills yet. You COULD get a BS quickly, but would lose it the first time you take it out, becuase you don't have the proper shield/armor/gunnery/missle/Electronic Warfare/Navigation skills. You are playing EVE for the long haul, not for the short. If you don't like it, i would suggest you go somewhere else instead, as EVE can get a bit boring (outside of corp PVP ops, of course :D )

and CCP are happy bunnies, as they have 250K active accounts, but 249990 of them only log in for skill change, which doesn't load their servers, and maybe 10 actually play their game... or are those 10 just the GMs?

Bzzt. Sorry, but your answer is incorrect. Thanks for playing though. You can catch up. Specialize. There is only so much SP you can gain to improve a specific task. What the older players have over newer players is versatility.
Please get your filthy "facts" and oppressive "logic" out of this whine thread. Go on, get out, or you'll be on the receiving end of a harrassment petition, monster.

No easy way to go on this one. If skills get done too fast people get bored because they are at the top (WoW), though in a game where you are meant not only to duke it out with others (OMGWTFBBQ) but to do so in groups with strategy (Blob, More BS!) and be able to afford doing so (Farmer Raven) maybe the skills do not need to take more than 10 days to train (> or = to Rank 5) with learning skills up and a few decent but not uber implants (Screw Learning give me Snakes and Crystal).
Then again I would be happy if we just had something ELSE to do in the EvE universe (**** Holoreels, Pleasure Hub, Pong) while we wait for these things to train besides than float and show off our ship to Roids and Mission Rats (Bite my rusted metal...Nevermind).
Sorry, I am feeling unusually Evil tonight. Must be the weather or something. +++++++++++++++ I saw the Sign...!

HEY!!!! You have no right to complain kid i started with 65k sp you start with over 800k!!!! Try that When the patch came out for sp boost I sitll omly ahd 1.4mil after 2 months of play so dont complain. Some of ous like the skill system also means you have to be patient and work for htings not instant gratifications. Its more realistic also so people who dont have the EXPERIENCE cannot fly the ships! [/url] |

EVE's skill system is what separates the boys from the men.
EVE is not a game for impatience players looking just for arcade action. The long schedules for good skills make sense due the complexity of that game.
With that concept you grow up in an intelligent way and you learn how to use all that stuff, how to fit your ships right for eg. missions and later PvP ... to have great skills asap will ruin the whole game.
I know some pilots who are totally unexperienced using a 40 Million SP character and they complained all the time that EVE sucks because they lost again their Nighthawk in a simple battle and they did not understand why. That is the price you pay for high-skills but no knowledge.
Beeing familar with EVE and finding your personal path needs that time. It's like reading Lord of the Rings. The first chapters are some kind of painful and boring but they are necessary to develop the whole big story and the other half of the books is awesome to read.
Accept the skill concept. It's great how it is to make that game exciting for a long time at the end.

It's true, some skills take way too long for an MMO "advancement" curve, it's just off putting and as such, a bit bad.
BUT...you can't ever change it. People would be outraged and complain since they themselves had to train those skills for a long time. "I twain you long time!"
Which is ridicilous schoolyard bully-cycle behaviour.
anyhoo, be it as it amy, long skills are the perfect excuse to go spend time with other MMOs and games as such, so, not all bad.
My opinions represent the opinions of my corporation completely. I'm the CEO damnit. |

well, i don't know u... but i don't see why i should pay CCP a monthly fee, to go OUTSIDE.
it's like the mining pros or gatecampers... i don't understand em... they sit at their computer, alt tabbed to some **** website... or maybe even reading a book... and they PAY CCP to do that. well, some of them sell the isk for GTCs, so in the end they spend hours and hours in front of the computer, and don't pay... i don't see any logic or fun in that.

Training does NOT take long! You can fly a bs in matter of weeks with t1 fitting. Ofc it won't be a strong bs but that is as it should be. There is a difference in able to fly and flying it well. You can fly missions or pvp with it but will have to know what you can handel and what not.
You wanna fly a carrier in a month? What would that leave for ppl ingame a year? They would all be in titans and then it ends as there is nothing more to look forward too.
And i'm pretty sure that i (27mill sp) can beat a 50mill sp in pvp as you can have only so much sp put into the ship you're flying. This is what makes eve fun. Players a year old can beat a 5 year old if the 1 year old char concentrates on 1 specialisation. People just tend to want to much different things and that makes em weak in all disiplines.
Eve skilling is just fine as it is. It leaves new things open for many many years but it is never a need to get there to enjoy the game.

Yeah, gotta agree with several other posters in this thread - don't rush to get into BS.
This was advice given to me early on and it's helped alot. BC is a good place to 'pause' your SC skills. The modules/skills you train at that level are essential for a LOT of good ships: T1 Cruisers, T1 BCs, Recon, HAC, Logistics, Command Ship...
Right now (T2 BS ahoy though) your 'large' skills for BS take a long time to train and are useful for BS...and that's it, until you get into cap ships (and those will take a LOT longer)

Best thing about grinding to the top in WoW is after 3 months your new elite gear is crap and you start the ******** grind again. That is and will be to much more effect a dated mmorg system when people realize it.

Jeez...
When I started you couldn't get implants. A few people had some and the devs were threatening to remove them entirely because they were overpowered.
We didn't have advanced learning skills.
When this changed it would cost you half a billion isk for a full set of +3s, and you'd need base learning skills at 5 (FIVE) to train the advanced ones. We started with a maximum of about 95,000 SP *if* you knew how to get the most out of character creation and wanted to specialise that way.
You noobs have it REAL EASY with your 800,000 SP, pre-trained learning skills and 100m set of implants. If you really dislike skill training THAT MUCH, then you do have the wrong game perhaps?

getting started can be a bit slow and tedious. however if you specialize you can be pretty much maxed out for a given ship in less than a year. you can be effective in pvp in just a few weeks with frig size ships, and even more so when ewar frigs come out.

Start small boy it is not size that maters in this game it is how you use it that counts.
Anyway training times are just right though I do think that we should have some more low rank skills instead of always getting new rank 10+ skills. But besides that I am perfectly happy with the length of skills.

Keep in mind guys this is the very same guy in the help channel that said once he obtains 10million skill points he will never ever loose in a 1v1 match.. Personally I think he should go back to WoW as we had a hell of a time stopping him from calling it a duel instead of a 1v1 fight.. LULZ

Well I can see his POW as a person that spends WAY too much time loged in.
For me it would be so much easier to just level the char like in any other MMO. Then again that would hurt people that have far less time to sink into what is after all a game.
On the other hand what my time sink does provide is epeen ships that I can gelt blown up and compensated due to fact that time online = ISK, if one is not pew pewing.
So you see - even when you have fun killing people, or geting killed for that matter - youre character still progresses.
But I do agree that basic skills - like learing and basic tank / weapons / cap - etc. - skills should take less time to skill up. This would be compensated with more time it would take for entering T2 world of goodies. Depends realy on how close you are to either of these things, older players will object, younger rejoice.
There is no unified answer to this puzzle ...
