What needs to happen is there needs to be an MMO based off the wing commander universe or an mmo based off of Freespace 3(so long ago and still nothing new *cries*). BlackProphecy while it looks a shiny and fancy it doesn't look any better then the Trinty update. And seeing as BlackProphecy is a tiny little layer of nothing right now Eve will blow it out of the water come Trinity.
As for Infinity, the planets look great but don't they look fairly compareable to the atmospheric demo shown by CCP? I know it the Eve Art Book it talks about how they've been working on planetary play. Which makes me think that surely CCP is not going to add in any of that looking half baked compared to the way Trinity looks?
Eve could use some competition as any company can, but I don't consider something with fancy graphics and a tiny nugget of gameplay worth my time.

As soon as there's any whiff of a spaceship MMO ever appears that has WoW-style mass appeal you can watch EVE's user base evaporate all except of the players with the most antediluvian characters.
EVE does so many things so abysmally badly that the only things keeping it afloat are the skill training system (which is a double edged sword), it's non-shardedness, and it's entrenched veteran players.
The thread in response to the econ report was very revealing. Only 13% of characters reside outside high-sec. And all the veterans trying to claim that's bull**** reveal that they typically have 1-2 characters in low-sec/0.0 and require 1-5 high sec alts to get by.
If they're so hell bent on getting people out into 0.0, maybe they should make it suck less? Cause if you can't actually survive out there without high-sec support alts I would say it's a pretty abysmal failure.
It even sheds light on my fairly new high sec support alt - created when I realized that attempting to survive in 0.0 with only one character was highly unlikely to succeed. -- Support fixing the EVE UI | Suggest Jita fixes

Well seeing as that game atm is pretty much nothing more than a graphics engine all the features are just a list of things they hope to bring into the game. So i'll wait and see 3-4 years from now how many of those things will be in the launch and how they work. If the game is even ever finished, which i doubt. I cant realy get excited about a hobby project in this early stage of development. Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Kreul Intentions ([email protected]) |

Originally by: Kiviar Honestly, if any mmo is to be considered a "threat" to Eve, than its probably Pirates of the Buring Sea.
Tried it in beta and it really sucked donkey balls. Ship combat was pretty good. Ground game sucked, pvp sucked, market sucked, pve and loss sucked. I was disappointed.
Eve doesn't retain its player base because its a space game. Eve retains its player base because of its game mechanics. A Star Trek MMO causes more fear to Blizzard than it does to CCP. Not too many developers are going to take the risk of making another MMO similar to EvE. Our heavy pvp and loss mechanics are not seen as positives items to many casual gamers.
That and neither the game nor the player base has a high tolerance or casual gamers who's feelings are hurt when they lose a ship to stupidity. Actually we're pretty hostile sometimes!

"Fighters, carriers and other capital ships engage in spacebattles of epic proportions, fought out between up to 300 players seeking fame, power, resources and control over strategically important space stations"
300? rofl. I wonder if that even means on the same grid or perhaps in same system.
I know currently eve gets very laggy with a couple hundred in a fight but it's better than a 300 hard limit. Would be pretty easy to win every fight if major alliances just had to bring 300 to lock down a system ;P

Jumpgate: Evolution is a remake of the original Jumpgate (circa 1999). Its a "spaceship trading pvp game", but you have to actually use skill to pilot your ship. Requires a joystick and uses a modified neutonian physics engine (has particle drag introduced).

Black Prophecy is not a rival in the slightest considering the rubbish its dev team have churned out in the past. I played Neocron for a year and a half and NC2 for about 6 months. If they STILL can't manage to make a working game after 7 years or so now then I doubt BP will be any better.
Also Infintity disses EVE to try to make itself look cool. Fail.

CCP dont love the game or you all they want is yor cash. What will be the next thing nerfed? CCP demise to other MMOG is neigh, but what they dont tell yo they are gonna take as much cash off of ppl then pull the plug. Why else all the changes and secrecy. Their system cant cope now let alone with 35 or 40k of players on at any one time. Remember the desync and lag (according to them it wasnt them it was all the players around the world that had the problem)
Do you really think they care? No the dont, they are corrupt, they steal, they lie and then insult your intellegence.
If they ared they would listen to players, but they dont. FFs dont be fooled by them, they are an american owned business based in iceland, as in all american business they want yor case and give very little in return.
Only if someone made Mankind into a modern formatt of MMo, that would wipe the smug smile of ccp!

Edited by: Zy Nox on 13/11/2007 17:09:21 I dont even play eve because it has spaceships... I came back to it after a year long break trying out other mmo's, none compare
I play it because it has free for all pvp, territorial control, death penaltys and is generally pretty cut throat stuff. If people leave EVE to find a more rewarding PVE experience elsewhere it will probably just make my gametime and playstyle more enjoyable tbh.

And from the videos of fanfest i've watched i'd definitely say they cared about the game.

Originally by: Winterblink Every played a game by Reakktor? I used to play Neocron, and while it was good for a time it was also one of the most stagnant and badly managed MMOs I've ever played. PVP was utterly without point. Their games look great, but don't stand up to long term play.
PvP in Neocron 1 was the most fun I ever had in any MMORPG. Conquering outposts, faction vs faction pvp, like raiding hostiles and defending your faction headquarter, and generally just having fun. If you can control large areas of the map and solve a conflict with another clan by killing them, until they switch faction or make rules for a pve-area, which is close to one of your outposts and use pvp to enforce those rules, then I say pvp has a point in that game.
I've played that game for over two years and I can honestly say that I have had pvp fun almost every single day during that time.
Conflicts were so simple: If you didn't come to a solution or just had enough of the talking: You started to hunt and kill eachother, until someone gave up.
( And that without all the hassle in EVE, like spending hours to get 5 minutes pvp. Actually it was more like: Let's meet, go there and kill them. And then you were in action. )

Yeah I'm awaiting the return of Jumpgate myself... so are the rest of my AQM brethren. Main reason I joined EVE in the 1st place was the original JG was dying and if they can pull this new version off right it will probably steal me away from EVE. Space game that has*****pit view and joystick control 4tw (not to mention the neutonian physics engine) ships can actually crash not just bounce.

But, it will be at least 2 to 3+ years before either of these make it to the market, if they ever do...
...and who knows what EVE will be like 2 to 3 years from now
Earth and Beyond died due to lack of comittment by the developers and they did not listen to their playerbase. Plus it had only "grinding" as a skill advancement. that being said. they had an extremely loyal fanbase even after pulling the plug. Hopefully CCP will keep everyone in the loop on the upcoming developments. Nerfing someone time investment in training for a specific goal and not giving them some love is not good customer relations methinks..

Infinity won't be ready for years. And even when it's ready i wonder whether it can compete with the EVE we have at that time - Same with Black Prophecy.
With Black Prophecy it looks like they are trying to contend with EVE directly - The shiny ship that has the same colors as a Vexor and looks a lot like it gives it away, really. Only thing is that it tries to compete with EVE as it was, and not as it will be, and that will be it's downfall. And the other thing that tells me that it'll flop: "up to 300 players at the same time". You can whine and ***** about EVE's fleet lag endlessly, the fact is that you *can* have truly epic battles. There's no limit to the amount of players in the same place. I'm still proud to have been at the battle in F-T, and i highly doubt an event like that can ever be mimicked by any other game - Bar Infinity. But, that game is vaporware for now.
Right now, EVE has no direct competition, and it will prolly never have it.
