hi-sec = safe(ish) money, very very boring mostly 0.0 = moar ISK with some risk
Personally I like ratting in 0.0 more than doing i.e lvl 4 missions. Ratting is generally safer (at least what comes to npc's) and you can go afk anytime without need to worry about not finishing mission in time or such crap. Also rats have 2xbounties than in missions or so. And no swarms of 5k bounty frigates. Funfun.

I live(d) in 0.0 because it was fun. I started the game at the invitation of a friend, was pulled into a corp and was in 0.0 before my first week of the game was up. I've recently spent more time in empire (lack of time for 0.0 commitment, hence the noob corp) and bloody hell, it's boring!! I can't fathom how anyone lives here permanently. Nothing ever happens, it's just missions and trading all day long. It's mind-numbingly dull. The only advantage is the ludicrous risk-free income from level 4 missions.

Originally by: Kazuo Ishiguro Obviously, this is not aimed at the small minority of players who already are in 0.0. I'd like to ask those players why they prefer it to high sec space. I suspect most people with characters in 0.0 space have at least one empire alt, but if you spend the majority of your time in 0.0, I'd like to know why.
It's possible to make a killing in Empire space at the moment with almost no risk, and without spending a great deal of time logged in, mainly because so many players are clustered together there and the opportunities for trade are much greater. As things stand, what incentives are there for people to move out? I see very few, except for reduced background lag - and I'm more interested in content than game mechanics.
I've been playing for 18 months or so now, and I've often thought about making the move, but every time I do I find there are fewer reasons to do so, and I've been putting down stronger and stronger roots in high sec. Right now, I get the impression (rightly or wrongly) that most of 0.0 serves solely as a massive isk sink.
It is possible to make a lot of ISK in hi-sec. In fact that's why I go there: missioning is much more lucrative than ratting, I'm sorry to say. But what are you making that ISk for? As an end in itself? Well you can get better ore in 0.0, that's for sure. If missioning is your thing, you can do that there too. But basically, you go to 0.0 to fight and prove yourself against other players.
Oh and it has nice empty locals.
If you're having fun in hi-sec, stay there. But the HUGE thrill I got (and I mean that literally: sweaty hands, heart pounding, blood racing etc) the first time I went in to 0.0 was a clear and undeniable sign that I would never be satisfied with anything else ever again.
Don't take this the wrong way, but your question is like asking "Well why do you want to hang around with girls? You have to buy all the drinks, they want you to go shopping with them, you'd have much more money if you were single, and they make you get rid of you cool stuff". Those things are all true but... there's that thrill thing again. Until you've done it yourself, there's no way it can really be explained to you.

actually, how much per hour can you reliably make in empire? the last method i used to make my isk gave a reliable 60 misk/hr.

If you look at 00 that way, you make the right decision staying in empire. 00 is for pvp, at least i can't look at it in any other way. The only thing that doesn't get boring there. Killing rats is boring fast. I guess trading can be good, but a bit risky if you are alone. People who care about their isk i guess 00 is not the best place to be.
I hate empire and i don't see any reason to stay there more than a few days. Laggy, loads of spam in local, more lagat least where i do missions for my isk)... Same damn missions, over and over again... It all comes down to your playstyle, and what you want to do in this game. |

Paint-ball is just a paint-sink. True, you can get paint at paint-ball places, but you can get it far more cheaply and conveniently at the store, without being forced to use a lot of your paint to defend yourself.
Look at all the paint I have while you wasted your playing paint-ball! Please understand that I realise that anyone flaming me is simply jealous of my huge paint wealth.

I doubt it has anything to do with the amount of isk you can make in 0.0 vs high-sec. The vast majority of the people in high-sec are there because they like it, there, they are solo or small corp players that run missions or mine/produce all day.
The reasons for living in 0.0 are simple: it's unscripted content. Missions/mining/building in high-sec: it is all the same, nothing will ever change drastically. When you do a mission you know down to the dps what you are getting. But in 0.0, I could be camped into a hostile dead-end today or be invaded by a 100 man BS fleet or mine for POS fuel or shoot at enemy POSs or whatever.
It's 2 different types of playstyles and you don't want to force one upon the other. I would think CCP would like more of their player base to live in 0.0 but increasing rewards in low-sec and null-sec would just make it so carebears get ganked a few times, get fed up and whine on the forums and then go back to high-sec.

0.0 isn't better than Empire, and Empire isn't better than 0.0. They're just different.
I don't think it's a question of PvP or no PvP either, there are just different types. While there are the straight-up fights in 0.0, in empire you also have wardecs, scammers, suicide gankers, market competition and so on.
I personally enjoy both sides of the game. Variety is the spice of life, as they say.

It's simple, real life is more important than a game. I don't have the time nor energy to devote to 0.0 I stay in empire because i cna log on, mine for a bit, mission, train a skill whatever and play a game I enjoy.
0.0 dwellers may whine about my playstyle, but just because i don;t feel like getting blown up by them doesn;t invalidate my playstyle.

How to get me personally into nullsec:
1. Remove the ability to fit a cloak to anything with a sig radius of 400 or greater. 2. A faster updating map. 3. Remove local or at least make it delayed. 4. Nerf mass reduction mods/rigs. 5. Free cake.
OPTIONAL EXTRA: A button that transmits a picture of Admiral Ackbar onto the screen of everyone in local in a choice of languages that must include Chinese. "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" |

Actually, I agree with you. And I'm an 0.0 dweller usually. I totally sympathize with those who don't much time to be online and prefer the low-investment of high-sec: you at least have some fun in high-sec and you don't have the long-term uncertainty of 0.0 to contend with.
Nonetheless, I think for those who are complaining about how their life is in high-sec, and have more than enough time and energy to live in 0.0, I can't sympathize with them. I would be in 0.0 right now under slightly different life circumstances. ---

Edited by: Karlemgne on 19/11/2007 02:46:44 Um, it would have to be a lot less lame. By lame, by the way, I mean the alliances would have to go.
I for one don't fancy sitting in space and ratting for hours on end until my eyes are about to bleed and for this to occur day in and day out. I also don't want some asshat popping onto my vent or into my vent channel and saying, "we're going on a 200 man op and you have to come!"
Especially considering these 200 man ops usually include 47 jumps and no actual combat, or alternatively 47 jumps followed by:
Primary, pop, primary, pop, primary... lag.. lag... pop... primary... lag... lag... lag... the FC shouting about dictors... lag... crash to desktop... log back in, look I'm in a station 47 jumps away.
You fix all that, then you might entice me into moving to 0.0.

I absolutely object to the notion that 0.0 is about PVP. I live in low-sec, which is about pvp.
I've also lived in 0.0 twice and both times PVP was pretty non-existent. In order to PVP in small roving gangs (like I prefer) you had to pretty much fly into low-sec or fly 50 jumps. Usually, because PvP is such a pain in the ass, much of what goes on in 0.0 is ratting and ratting and ratting and ratting and ratting... could it get anymore boring?
Then there is the "alliance" pvp aka giant blobs with lots of lag and the oh so fun POS sieges. That might be in the strictest sense "pvp," but its not what I consider fun and I'm a pvpers.

So my Vagabond just bounced off a friendly station without docking for no apparent reason while surrounded by an enemy bubble and taking fire from a 19-man armada. On the bright side it lasted all of thirty seconds under concentrated fire from all involved, but on the downside I'm feeling mightily butthurt over the no-docking shenanigans.

0.0 is a great way to make ISK off ratting and even manufacturing for alliances. PvP is alot more fun in some ways than in low sec because alot of the smaller ships are used more often, aside from blob warfare of course.
In some ways 0.0 can be more secure than high sec if you're in a good alliance, due to mutual protection. ------ \o/ Raise thy weapons on this day Ye shall not die alone Fight and die; let valkyries fly For they shall take thee home! |

oh man, where to begin....
i have one account with one real character and he pretty much lives in 0.0. so much so that i get freaked out whenever i come back to empire and see a bunch of neutrals in my overview. after a few jumps i get used to it, but still, it takes a while.
i've never been much of a mission runner. i have enough standings with one npc corp to get at some lvl 3 research agents, but that's about it.
i orginally set out to 0.0 for the high-end ores. that was about four score and 3 great wars ago. my real introduction to pvp was when goonswarm invaded lotka voltera space. and man, i haven't looked back since.
if you're not in 0.0 you're missing out on most of the content of this game. you can make 20-30 mil an hour ratting or mining, or you can 50 to 100 mil an hour running plexes. and you can make even more with exploration. where do you think the 4-run ship interface bpc's that sell for 800 mil a pop come from? or the 200 mil isk skillbooks?
but the coolest part is working with your corp and alliance mates to make it all work. there is no concord. there are no guards. there is no game mechanism that will come to your rescue if someone bigger and meaner than you decides they want your space. you can only do what you and your allies can do for yourselves. it's cold, it's harsh, and it's a touch like the real world.
and pvp in 0.0 is by far the most amazing part of this game. i've fought in 300 person battleship fleet fights. i've commanded roaming gangs. i've had 30+ guys warp or jump their ships on my command. i've laid traps, dogged traps, chased hostiles, ran from certain death, defended pos's, taken down pos's, and have helped take new territory just to see us lose it almost as quick.
and heck, i've prolly lost several billion isk worth of ships. but you know what? i'll never ever live in empire. :-)

This is a game that orbits around (95% of it) space ships with weapons. Weapons implicate combat, so, why stay in high sec is beyond me (bar time periods in high sec to make some isk form missions etc.. to stock for more 0.0 life time)

imho you can do much more isk in 0.0 but you have to work for it and the isk stream is not as steady as in highsec. also 0.0 rewards are often highly luck based (explorarion for example). but if you score you get rich. still if i have to replace my dread or have to work thowards something expensive i usualy resort to lvl 4's just for the fact that its predictable how much isk i will earn the next few hours.
btw. i think 0.0 ratting sucks and shold be boosted a lil. (but probably thats just because i live in the shiethole of 0.0 called geminate:)
