If I want to try my hand at Pvp and everyone asks you to be on Vent or Teamspeak ( which is better btw ? What Headset should I consider ? Personnel comfort is the major consideration .. if iam going to while away hours in a low-sec gatecamp or Nano-gang across the wilds of the 0.0 universe.
Can anyone lend an ear and advise me ? Thanks

You'll never regret spending money on a good headset...but don't go overboard on it as no matter how expensive the headset, it'll not increase the volume of "whisper man" or reduce the volume of "loud man"
As for Vent and TS, unless you are setting up your own corp, it doesn't matter which is better, you'll be expected to use whichever your corp has.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

Fortunately fixing those issues is free. Unfortunately most people don't have the vaguest idea on how to set their mic levels properly. They expect me to change their volume in Vent, which is not my job and it also can lead to poor quality if you have to turn a really quiet person up loud enough. Signal/noise ratio and all that.
Anyway, the main thing you want to look for in a headset is reliability and comfort.

The only part that really matters is that you can hear people, and you transmit decently.

I cant remember the normalization settings for vent :) Was a nice thing for it to boost the whispers and dampen the shouters.
IMO, vent is clearer.

Ventrillo is definetly the better of the both although the voices sound a bit weired at first if you are acustomed to TS. Sound is very clear which is very important if you want to make sure everbody can understand what the FC wants of them.

I hate headsets, they don't work with glasses.
I used to have some crap headset that I got free with Battlefield 2 that I would put around my neck with the mic bent up to my mouth, but it was crap and no one could hear me unless it was in exactly the right position.
it broke when I accidentally stepped on it, so I bought a $10 Logitech desk mic and it's infinitely better. no one ever complains about my volume even if I'm talking at it from arm's length.

If you are looking for comfort and durability, I can highly recommend the SteelSound 5Hv2 (v1 was crap). You will get better sound for the price (the SteelSound is optimized for hearing clear sound in FPS games), but it still sounds quite good and I always use it for music and movies. Then again, I'm not an audiophile.
It comes with a very useful retractable microphone of good quality, it is solidly constructed including a cloth-coated cable and very comfortable to wear with large, soft ear-pads that sit entirely around your ears. It's also vented, which is nice in summer, and can be snapped into pieces for safer traveling.
If you want best sound quality, you should probably either go with a Sennheiser or (even better) an expensive headphone with separate microphone. For comfort and functionality, I have not seen better value than the SteelSound yet.

Whatever one you get, make sure you don't let your kid brother get his hands on it when you come home for the holidays. My boom mic won't hold a position for crap now.

I would also recommend that you get a USB headset, because this will be treated as another sound device, separate to your main sound device. This means you can direct Ventrilo and Teamspeak to use the headset, whilst everything else continues to use your main speakers.
That way, you don't have to muck around with utilities that suppress/mute normal sounds when someone talks, and with a half-decent headset the microphone won't pick up what your main speakers are outputting (given the caveat that you're not trying to level the local geography with loud music). |

You will never regret spending some more isk on a good Heaset but you will surely regret if you buy a cheap one...well at least after wearing it for some hours. Right now i use a Logitec Headset, neckholder Design...but i will change to a different one soon...guess i will get me the Razer Headset.
Oh and i cannot tell whats better cause i never tried vent so far. TS works for me pretty well...

Other people will appreciate if you've got a good headset. Nothing like hearing a lot of static and buzzing when you're asking for intel.

I have tried a few different USB headsets and have had really bad experience with it. Bad sound quality in both directions, unstable drivers that kill not only the sound but the whole computer etc etc etc. Finally I just gave up and started running TS/Vent on a separate computer. ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

Best headset I've owned cost me like 20 bucks. Cyber Acoustics AC-740, the in-ear speaker is worse than a telephone but I normally have voice comms output over the speakers anyway. The microphone was the main thing for me since I've spent more on a headset and had shoddy mics. This one works great.

I bought an expensive one just for sheer comfort tbh, the only thing i urge for people to do is buy a decent microphone, and not something your mum bought you while she was doing the groceries.
cheap microphones are prone to static, and it irritates everyone else on teamspeak/vent when you sound like you've got your head outside a train window.
I have the Sennheiser PC165, kind of expensive if you're just wanting to use them for TS though.

So very true
Personally I dont like using headsets. instead I find a desktop mic and headphones work far better for me. The poor sound quality of the headsets that i tried, and having the mic right in my peripheral vision consistantly annoyed me. Furthermore I find most headsets tend to become uncomfortable in very long gaming sessions. I bought my desktop mic at futureshop for maybe $10, and I have never had any complaints about voice quality, or volume. ---

Vent has better sound quality, but is only suitable for small numbers. You're really pushing it by about 20 or so. It's just too succeptible to lag. When TS lags, it simply stutters the sound, so it might still be audible, and it's damned obvious that you're lagging. When vent lags, everything just stops outright, buffers, and plays back with no pauses. Ever heard 10 minutes of 30 people talking within a minute? Not a good thing. TS is also much, much easier to administrate, and has the ever-useful channel commander functionality (essentially a private secure line between authorised persons).
As for mics, best mic i've ever had is an ú8 one from game down the road. Still use my medusas for the output though, as their speakers are top-notch, if a little prone to breaking.

Be careful with the fairly cheap Logitec USB headsets. It has a weak connection where the line connects to the set. I had mine less then a year when I started getting static every time the line moved.

Well, Here's my setup........
Headset yes, spend say about ú20-ú25 if you can and you'll get a decent one (if not just by any old cheap one but the Mike will not be as good).
Then........ if you need to be private, route all the sound through the headset (ie the game sound and voice etc...) but the way I play MOST is headset hanging round my neck and incoming voice out the speakers (just need to adjust the relevant volumes so that your Corp speak is always heard over the sound of the game), then position the mike so you can hear, Oh yeah and assign a hot key to the mike rather than sound activated because you'll be surprised what sounds can switch your mike on .
Thats it, sit back have the sound out the speakers and voice in the mike, that way you can also hear of your gitlfriend calls you (assuming you still have one after eve or even before).
Hmm Vent I prefer in terms of the software but not that much difference, you can actually run both if you assign different sound channels...

Personally, I've run TS and Vent at the same time. (Seperate push-to-talk buttons) It does come in handy to be able to talk to a certain couple people on a private channel without having to switch between programs or trying to remember which key combos to send a whisper.
Both programs have their pros and cons. I keep hoping that there'd be a merge of the two somehow.... _______________________________
