Hi all! We`ve heard a lot of things about that in the past. I remember the "end of empire trade as we know it" thread quite well. But I've been wondering if this Highsec hauler/freighter ganking still goes on that much nowadays. Tell your stories!
Ps: Were you aware you could determine the contents of a courier mission package using a cargo scanner?

It happens all the time. I watched someone in Jita lose two Zealots the other day, each worth 82 mil. The ganker paid me 10 mil to watch the wreck while he took 2 trips to return the goods. It was funny to me, but must have been a real pain in the ass for the victim.

I remember flying from Amarr to Jita and on the way, being cargo-scanned by about five groups of combat ships that were sat on the stargates on the way in. If I had been carrying anything amazingly valuable, then I'm pretty sure they'd have taken my Shuttle straight down. :)
Thankfully, I was only going there to set up buy orders. ------

My alts get scanned in Empire all the time, even shuttles and frigs get scanned by little Thrasher noobs. To put in that kind of time and attention, trade must be good.

Just fly a ship which makes it extrememly hard or not profitable to gank you and you should be fine though. If you tank a BS/BC/Command ship enough so it's pointless you gank you, you should be good in Hi-Sec. Though low sec and no sec is another story.

Yeah it still happens. Many weeks ago my old corporation and I went to blow up one of our wartarget's alt in high-sec while he was mining. We were about 5-6 and blew up a mining ship. We obviously lost our cruisers which we used to blow him up. But it was so funny. ______

What is the isk value contained in a freighter for it to be worth ganking it in: 0.5 0.6 0.7 0.8 0.9 1.0
Transport ships: wont go there due to some ppl fitting them silly and no standardized setup like a freighter =)
I assume a freighter isnt to much of interest if its hauling pos fuel, but implants? guns? juicy t2 mods? full of zydrine? :P
My guess would be: 0.5: 1bm+ add 200m/+0.1 and double for for 1.0
Nerfing carriers and most everything nice for a t2 freighter that should be tier 2 isnt balancing ccp :( |

There are formulas for suicide ganking.... if the value of the cargo being hauled is over double the value of what the ganker will lose to CONCORD, then it's gun-time. If no potential profit, then sit and mope. _______________________________

Make scanning a ships cargo a hostile action. That would certainly slow the problem!

Yes, they can see your cargo.
The ONLY method to avoid being cargo scanned is to fly a ship that gets into warp VERY fast, and use warp to 0 and jump immediately when reaching gates.
In other words, the only way to avoid being cargo scanned is to move so fast that they never manage to get a scan off.

if moving high value stuff, mix it in with low value crap. Make the pirate work to check though tons of mods to see if anything is expensive /CCP fix for Amarr is in EVE Trinity - The Trinity of training either Caldari, Gallente or Minmatar! |

Of the various solutions, making a concord ship loss negate insurance would at least make committing 'crimes' cost something.
As it is right now, you are not safe in ANY ship in empire if you have a valuable cargo. The only solution is a risky one, the 'go too fast to be scanned' routine. If you do get scanned, a kestrel might be able to suicide you because all you can do is enter warp quickly, not take any points.

You are almost certainly safe with <500mil, and probably fine with <1bil. Freighter ganks are less common since they require much more organization. Its easier to just get a couple of bses to take down poorly tanked indys.

I prefer running more tank than the gankers brought in DPS. I don't have to beat ANY of them, all I have to do is outlast them. If I've got even a single point of hull left when CONCORD gets through with the gankers, I've won and can repair at leisure. The best idea is assume that they ARE after you, regardless of cargos. If enough haulers would do this, suicide gankers would notice that it costs too much in ships/fitting for the potential revenues gained.
Suicide Ganking: A tax on the lazy/uneducated hauler. _______________________________

Dunno if it's a sploit, or even true...but as a noob I was told you could drag Bookmarks to cargo and they will screw up the scans and lag em all to hell while you jump away. Just a thought, never tried it ;)

I have 3 containers that contain nothing but singleton items of crap, whenever I fly with valuable loot I stick those 3 cans and the scanner is such a mess they have a hard time finding the good stuff.
This buys you enough time to warp out, and cluttered cans arent a hassle in the ships cargo.

I have several crap cans as well, filled with all the crap and pocket lint I could get my hands on. Carry them around all the time in my indy. Perhaps it would be a good business idea to start selling them; 'Crap Cans Inc.'
And if I was a freighter pilot i'd invest in a full high grade slave set + those +5% shield/armor/structure implants

I have read old comments by GM that did consider it a exploit. Sadly in EVE there isn't a list of things declared exploit. That is particularly fastidious as the rulings change from time to time.

From what I understood of all the threads about this topic is that it usually happens if people have 1) a T1 hauler filled to capacity with expensive equipment and 2) aren't using "Jump to 0"
Is it possible to be cargo scanned, locked down and popped before you can warp away or to a "warp to 0"? I don't think you can, but I'd like to know just the same. :)

Low grade slave sets FTW. :)
Gank squads are set up for optimal damage right at the squeeking edge of a freighter's defenses. Low Grade slaves fubar that calculation all to heck and back, and they're equally effective on haulers.
OFC having shield extenders & overdrives helps when you're on autopilot. Instead of trucking in from 15 at 90m/s, you can get as quick as 300 m/s. Most gank squads die before they can krack your nut, and your increased speed limits their adding more ships to the gank once the first one's go down.
