Really? It's the same colour for the beard and the hair. Hmm... in what way does it look fake? Too soft on the root colour or the hair colour?

The pose is good but I feel the background catches the eye too much. That and the white dress shirt, maybe something duller in the back to stop the white and the red contrasting too much with your face, it pulls the eye away.

You chose the "Red nebula that incidentally looks like the fires of hell" background. Solid choice.
Now he looks like a man who enjoys the smell of napalm in the morning as it burns freedom deep into the flesh of all those who don't surf. (I like this sentence, you might want to read it twice).
The problem I currently see is with that cloudy thing in the background that is pointing towards your nose.
It looks like a big lava bogey coming out of your nostrils..
Two possible solutions:
1. Zoom your avatar one or two clicks closer. Also change the lightning effects...the fire is behind you, so the light should come from behind you as well.
2. Turn his head to the right, open his mouth. Now it will look as if he is spitting fire ,like TROGDOR, burninating the countryside!

Your's average because of how far it is zoomed out. Zoom in to just above the bust line. The shades may or may not need to come off depending on how it looks zoomed in... 5/10

I agree, I'd ditch the shades. What do you mean cross eyed? Can't you edit what you're looking at when you're finalizing your avatar picture?
