Edited by: Deathifier on 07/12/2007 20:45:06 Hi, just want to get peoples opinions on this. In my travels through the world of Eve, I've noticed in a few regions of empire space Alliances claiming ownership of low sec (0.1-0.4) systems and operating a NBSI policy. For neutrals doing missions in these systems it amounts to piracy under another name.
Is this low-sec empire 'land grab' fairly common throughout the eve galaxy, and if so what do you think of this style of play. Imho it's a method for carebear alliances who woudln't hack it in 0.0 to push their weight around. But that's just my opinion.

And.... a lot of these alliances are claiming to be industry/mining carebear type alliances yet their actions don't fit their description, and smacktalk any non alliance that enter the systems.

NBSI in low-sec is pretty much piracy - or at least serial murder, since they may not be after ransom. Alliances claiming low-sec under any other ROE are quite legitimate; pirate-filled low-sec is a great place to learn things while building skillpoints and assets before a move to any other kind of 0.0 space. (Also helps if your first move is to, say, a pirate-infested NPC-run hell of a 0.0 like....Syndicate.)
Just one guy's thoughts, anyhow.

My old alliance practiced NRDS in low sec, protecting mission runners (who incidentally were our members or friends and certainly no carebears. Mission running ships are great for ganking small gangs of pirates. they don't come back).
Then an NBSI alliance moved in. We NAP'ed them since we were smaller, but in the end they were such a bunch of *******s in the way they treated their members and others in the region, they got booted out and fell apart

Been out of region for a while, but one of my old friends still there said that some NBSI groups had started moving in again (different ones). History repeating itself?
Basically, alliances that are just made of pirates that want cheap ganks and no effort to actually foster relations with other corps / groups have a short life expectancy

Maybe you should stop making foolish assumptions first. The reason I created this post was due to a convo I seen on local chat a few days ago, with a lot of smacktalk coming from the mission runner. I'm not really into mission running tbh and as you already mentioned my corp name suggests :) I just wanted to find out if claiming virtual soverignty (sp) over low sec empire systems was common through eve.

People shoot people. And then, like, people totally shoot them back.
If someone says they "own" low-sec space, and they effectively control what goes on in it, and no-one is stopping them, then they own it. Whether you call it piracy, murder or territorial control is really neither here nor there when talking about blowing up internet spaceships.
Personally, I'd say that blowing people up in your own 0.0 space is "defence", doing it in other peoples 0.0 is "raiding" (no WoW connotations intended), doing it lots in other peoples territory is "invading", and doing it in Empire is "piracy". But thats just me. ------

Havent you heard, piracy is dead. Territorial control is part of eve and just like 0.0 lowsec has its "controllers" but calling them pirates is incorrect imho. IMHO any group of players that try to control/secure an area of land can not be called pirates. Pirates are a seperate entity.

Most alliances start in 0.0 build up their organization skills, industry and learn the basics of how to run an alliance. Learn how to setup and manage POSes as well as their pilots. Then with or without a friendly's help they move into 0.0 when they think they have what it takes. Also a move is often a good thing for a young alliance. Especially a move to 0.0 because you'll weed out a lot of the pilots in your alliance that aren't pulling their weight or don't have what it takes to operate in a 0.0 alliance.
You'll usually lose a large portion of the mining/industrialists because they'll lose a few retrievers and want to go back to the safety of empire. But lowsec is a stepping stone. NBSI policies are in place to protect the alliance's miners from roaming lowsec pilots. Gatecamping and lowsec lockdowns are simply tactics to employ that protection.... --

I see it this way: Piracy is killing other peeps to profit from their losses. NBSI is killing other peeps to protect your own resources and players.
So if you indiscriminately attack other players in low sec because you want to score a killmail and gather their loot even in what you claim to be your territory - that's piracy. If you're attacking other players because you see them use your resources, because they have attacked your own players, or because you have good grounds to believe that they are enemy spies - that's NBSI. In short if you truly NBSI your aims are different from if you want to pirate and you'll act accordingly. Since you aren't looking for a gank, you will first alert the neutral that this is a NBSI area. Ask it to leave and give a solid reason for asking it to leave (why you consider it a threat). If the neutral refuses, then it is fair game. If you just roam around and kill anything without positive standing, that's piracy. Even pirate corps set blue standings, but they kill for sake of profit and killmails, not to protect their turf.

Quote: No-one cares that you call them that unless you're a bigger entity that can wardec them and prove they're pirates through force of arms.
It basically means "no-one gives a **** about what you think unless you roll in with bigger and more numerous guns, in which case you can call it whatever you like".
0.0 territorial control used to be slagged as "piracy" back in the day through pretty much the same logical fallacy that the OP uses to decry lowsec control.

In the end it doesn't actually matter if they retain superiority through force of arms.

What about force of legs? Legs can be pretty forceful too when applied correctly. -[WillChat4ISK]- I can be the handsome Amarr space captain. You can be the helpless Minmatar slave girl. |

You're not taking the matter at hand seriously enough. Light-hearted comments like that will only help maintain the status quo of something or the other. Whatever, I lost interest already.

I resent the implication that Huzzah and friends are pirates.

A group that prevents you from undocking and ratting/mining/hauling in .1 is just as legitimate as a group that does the same in 0.0 npc regions, other than the security hits. If you're docked and they're not, they are controlling you.

I was a member of the "alliance" that got moved out of Khanid. Funny how history looks different depending on the viewpoint.
After having spent a year of my life in an industrial corporation, and the latter half of that in a somewhat competent (concerning pvp... low sp averages suck!) alliance, here's my take:
NBSI creates conflicts, and makes enemies. But it also diverts attention from the NPCers. NBSI provides targets for assorted practice and gang ops. Probing down mission runners is an excellent practice for 0.0 covop-pilots-to-be. Locking down gates is great practice, and you really appreciate interceptors and interdictors more once you're in 0.0. NRDS encourages "real" pirates to come in and shoot your miners with little to no warning. Without having pvpers at random gates in a region, or paying attention to d-scans, how do you know whether someone is cruising through space in a HAC and not an industrial? Ground Zeero alliance did have people in it who were interested in the piratey aspect of NBSI in lowsec. And we made efforts to control/remove them. After gaining a few million skillpoints though, our pilots and corporations did break up from our alliance, and most are now contributing corporations in 0.0 alliances putting their skills to the test, and proving that lowsec practice pays off. Oh, and we worked hard to make tons and tons of blue standings, but various corps and alliances still bunched up their panties over it. That's their problem - wasn't ours.
To the OP: Get over it. It's lowsec, that means you'll get shot. If you want to operate in space with a NBSI alliance, TALK TO THEIR DIPLOMAT FOR STANDINGS!!!. If they are half-decent NBSI lowsec corp, they'll have ideas in place for setting mutual standings, coordinating defense, and possibly paying for the security their pilots provide for the mission running. GZ had several groups that paid "protection money" or helped significantly with PvP. If you didn't want to pay, you were welcome to run your missions somewhere else. Not like EVE has a lack of agents. Same applies to you. NBSI lowsec corp got your family jewels? Move out and make your money elsewhere.

I am an alliance and I claim Issinoka Spacelane ... Beware..
On a serious note, Amarr low sec space is huge compared to others and is a very good area to learn and hone those skills needed for 0.0...
i.e. It is empty, everyone is napped and it's a pain to make isk...
oh no wait, you lose sec status
