Your messages of support and appreciation are all very warmly received, but even more than that I would like your suggestions. We need concrete ideas. Hugs are good- but we have plenty right now. Let's generate some more ways to engage, motivate or otherwise involve the playerbase in making EVE better.
Don't be afraid to post, new pilots! I'm one of you.
Let me advance another idea, because even though I'm afraid of dominating the discussion I think this is important enough for a mention:
What about an EVE version of the pay-it-forward concept? If we performed random acts of kindness and giving instead of random destruction, I think it would spread throughout the galaxy. This is my inspiration:
Pay it Forward
Imagine how confusion might turn to joy when someone you randomly convod realized you weren't trying to mess with them- you'd just contracted them a shiny new named afterburner, or frigate, just because you believe in the principle of improving the quality of play/life for everyone.
Remember this is a discussion so go ahead and comment freely.

I have decided to dedicate my next couple of days in Eve to a great cause: I will be flying a RR BS through various areas of 0.0 space, repping ratters in belts so that they may make isk to fund their dreams. Friend, foe, it doesn't matter. This is the most joyous time of the year and a perfect opportunity to give back to my fellow spaceship pilots so that the next time they need to buy a fancy module they can think back and say "Hey, I made this Isk when that kind fellow saved me from near-doom with his full rack of reps!"
Happy holidays to you all, however you may celebrate this season!

I disagree with the OP. Part of the fun in PvP warfare is cultivating a "healthy" hatred for your opponent. This makes any sense of victory more enjoyable. However, keep in mind that hatred doesn't necessarily have to be mutually exclusive with respect.

"No man is so high, that he may judge those he sees below"~Unknown
With that said, I think it's time for a little civility on not only the forums, but in the actual game. A bit of friendly back and forth is alright, but to follow up with repeated convos and evemails is too much. Simply because you are at odds with another person, due to play style, choice of playmates or even simply your preferred ship fitting, you should not harass others who play the game.
We all play this game as a means to escape our laser/missile/autocannon/blaster/railgun-less lives and we all want to relax, but how can anyone relax with so much hostility? Forget the repeated memes and taunting phrases. Leave past insults, threats ands accusations to lie in the dust of the past where such things belong.
All I'm asking is for a measure of humanity in a vacuum. Be friends, relax, chat over the now free eve-voice of whateveritiscalled. Enjoy yourself, and help others enjoy their free time. We all pay to be here, so we all have the right to be free from petty bickering.
This thread is in earnest, so I hope it does not descend into trolling and the like, I would not like to see it be *click*ed.
My thread was locked a duplicate, so I hope this one remains alive and well, just like EVE.

These are all valuable concepts- a shared respect for each other and a willingness to phrase our feelings in a manner that raises the general level of discourse above trolling and alt-posting.
I really appreciate that goons are willing to extend courtesy to each other and other players. In keeping with the tone of this thread, I would like to ask you guys to refrain from posting unless you have an idea to contribute or comment on. I'll give an example:
I think it would be valuable to hold a tour of part of our space- invite members of other alliances to show them something we feel particularly proud about. A station we constructed with minerals we mined with painstaking effort, or a POS we feel particularly proud of the specific choice of fittings. Many people may have never seen a POS before- this would be a good opportunity to introduce them to the idea in a safe area policed by our alliance.
In parting, UneFraise- would you please stop making such intensely negative comments that do nothing to contribute to this thread.

Please stay on-topic. This is a serious topic, and even though your posts are welcome to involve a light-hearted element we need to preserve our purpose if we want this discussion to continue.
Expanding on my previous post wherein I suggested that guided tours of our space may offer a unique opportunity to others, I would like to hear from other alliances and corporations about what sort of unique experiences they might be willing to offer. If we could set up a variety of mutually interacting programs, we might be able to foster greater inter-alliance communication, which has always been the goal of this thread.
Let's take for example the concept of fostering children with your allies, or even your enemies. What if we did a pilot exchange program, so that we could learn more about the ways in which our friends and opponents operated? Of course some security measures would need to be taken, but I think this is an incredible concept, and the only thing that's needed to put it into reality is your participation. Can you see how much fun this would be? Additionally, the amount of cultural information the 'fostered' pilot would bring back would help all alliances to understand each other better.

Instead of fostering children, which leaves out certain elements crucial to space-faring fun, can we not *****pillage and loot, sowing our seeds randomly and impregnating the enemy females instead?
Tell Mittens you most definitely win the contest.

Best, Jhyme
I held off on addressing this question for a while, because the issue is a really huge one- maybe the most important for us to try and grapple with inside the discussion we've framed so far. How do we reconcile the fact that a healthy feeling of competition is important, while keeping in mind the need to be fair and kind to our opponents?
I don't know if hatred is the right word to use here. For my part, I'll stick with 'competitiveness' until a better term appears. I'm not sure if hatred can play a constructive role.
I'm glad you point out that we can be opposing each other and still experience respectful feelings. It's exactly that sentiment that's inspired a lot of my ideas so far- like protected tours of the wonders of 0.0 space (I'd go on one), and pilot 'fostering' programs.
EVE is a cultural experience- have we reflected on that enough? The players come from many different countries, speaking many different languages, and everything is filtered through a world of spaceships and lasers. It's a totally unique opportunity. You can say "I didn't just get an experience of making a German/Russian/British/Chinese/Indian/etc friend, I got to experience making an international friend in space!"
Jhyme, and everyone- what do you feel the most effective techniques are for creating an EVE where we experience respect for each other even during competition?

Jhyme, and everyone- what do you feel the most effective techniques are for creating an EVE where we experience respect for each other even during competition?
I think the answer lies in how you interpret "smacktalking". In some professional sports, such as wrestling/boxing, smacktalking is an institutionally sanctioned event. The telecasters show snippets of the wrestlers/boxers talking trash to one another before fights. This effectively raises the stakes in the wrestling/boxing match-up, and makes the upcoming fight more entertaining. Sports teams, whether it's professional or college sports, has a set of fans that also engage in variations of smacking.
Now compare this to politics. Smacking here often involves mud-slinging and personal attacks. Propaganda isn't aimed at trying to raise the stakes on a particular outcome, but to cut down the opponent independent of whatever outcome occurs.
EVE has both. Over time, some alliances have developed the norm that smacking is negative, and consider a smack-free fight an honorable fight. However, I posit that smacking can be respectful as long as it's non-personal, and kept in the spirit of professional sports-- where there are no politics. Whoever loses the outcome should accept defeat and humiliation. This is a system that promotes competition, as the stakes are raised by smacking. Respect isn't necessarily something that is earned before the fight, it is a relationship between the winner and loser afterwards. If political-oriented or personal propaganda tries to mitigate the roles of winner and loser, creating win-win or lose-lose situations, there can be no respect.
tl;dr : Politics is the culprit.
