Today, at 10:36 GMT we unfortunately had an unscheduled downtime of the Eve Cluster connection. In preparation for certain downtimes, we sometimes need to ensure certain things are correct and in order, this preparation involves some network and systems changes for security reasons. The error today was a human operational error that involved accidently stopping the Tranquility communication with the world. We would like to emphasize that this is not any issue with the game, network, cluster or other matter and it was an unfortunate mistake on the part of the operator. We apologize for the early downtime today and we would like to further assure everyone that steps have been taken to ensure that this type of error happening again has been greatly reduced.

You'll find most ship reimbursment petitions get answered in 1-2 weeks from lodgement and on rare occasions 3 weeks.

Indeed they did, I am wondering CCP, what "reimbursement" will you provide to those that lost say priceless items from a boot.ini related error which had to be solved by a reformat? I know of two people who had to reformat and were not able to save their data. The ball is in your court, what will you do?

Priceless Data that they didn't have a backup for. Wow.
It probably wasn't even the boot.ini bug. They probably took one of those virtual IQ tests during downtime, and the PC tried to divide by zero.

But let's see what is more interesting... what about you?
1- maybe you are just ignorant and want some answers. But, your words are kinda rude 2- or maybe you know it. I call shenanigans. A missing boot.ini does not require a reformat. If you have an XP CD from which to reformat and reinstall, then you have the tools to recover the box. However, a reformat might have resulted from panic. I suggest the corresponding reimbursement.

Edited by: Venatoris Portucalis on 20/12/2007 18:04:14 Somewhere on a secret and remote location, deep inside the earth lies the CCP DataCenter. So secret, that even the technicians that work there donÆt know its location and have be driven there my blind SherpaÆs; so remote, that none would ever think of going there, a bit like Iceland; and so deep that even moles cant dig that far. But our action today will not happen on this bunker, mainly due to the fact that it has been abaddon (sorry, couldnÆt resist) a few weeks ago due to water infiltrations, hell who would think on building a bunker deep inside a river and not expect a bit of wateràmaybe it could have been fixed, but the first repair team couldnÆt find the place, and the second refused to go to such remote location, so instead the CCP datacenter for now resides in the attic of this 6 storyÆs, 80 years old apartment building, but soonÖ to be moved back, after all even Dr. Erluder S. Thor Stein n Son said it was only a temporary move, 3 years agoà But back to our story, today like any other day, Master technician Mr. Issuldorf Knows A. Cable prepares to do one of the joys of his work, to bring down all the servers of EVE, a job he always performs with absolute precision and with a great feeling of accomplishment. He has been doing this job for years and has done that task many times. Some grieving people, full of envy, could say that he has performed that job too many times, or at the wrong times, but for Mr. Issuldorf there is never a bad time to bring down the EVE servers and today like every day he opens his toolbox, puts on his gloves and starts to login on the servers, when suddenly he remembers! This is not a normal day; ThatÆs way he had brought his assistance, Mr. Donovan Dontknow S. A. Cables, today they are going to move the hamsterÆs cage from the left corner to the right corner, where there are less water leaks from the rooftop, the hamster have threaten with a strike if they had to keep running that much wet. Mr. Issuldorf has decided to Fart (ups sorry, I mean Frap) the entire operation and put it anonymous on the net, maybe on YouTube, or even better sell it on eBay for a couple of Euros, hell if there are people buying ISK with Euros, someone would definitely be stupid enough to buy this video. So Mr. Issuldorf starts to put up his web camera, when he notices the power cable is too short to reach the wall socket, so he shouts to his assistance: ôHey Don, pass me a power extension, fast, fast, we donÆt have all day and we are not paid by the hour!ö Mr. Donovan, looks around for any cable but fails to seen any, so he opens his own toolbox in hope to find some there, but inside there is only is launch that his sweet mamma has prepare for him 2 days ago. (Hey, this might not be a secret and deep location anymore, but its still in Iceland, so pretty remote!!) So he shouts back, ignoring the fact that his boss is only 1 meter away, he has learned very fast that all technicians need to shout to be heard: ôSorry Mr. Issuldorf I canÆt find any cables around.ö, shouted Donovan. ôLook behind that grey closet, there should be several lying around...ö shouted back Issuldorf. ôHey, I see them, I will get one for you.ö shouted Donovan. ôàjust make sure itÆs not plugged into anythingàö continued Issuldorf. His phrase cut short has a row of red lights start to blink. Mr. Issuldorf never knew why, but he always knew that lights blinking red was not a good thing, he himself would prefer orange blinking lights, he was always terrified of orange since he was a kid. He still shakes when he remembers in terror his last birthday, just when they were about to cut the cake one of his neighbors offered him a Orange BoxÖà he couldnÆt look at the cake anymore that dayà Portaling those thoughts out of his mind he focus on the situation at hand and discover that the proxy servers were turned off, he look at the clock, 10:36, that would be ok it was almost downtime anyway.

Time to phone CCP HorseCareTaker and tell him about what happened, there will be players screaming in the forums, there always is. But CCP HorseCareTaker is the person for the job; he can always say the most absurd things and keep a straight face, and people actually believe him. ôHey HorseCareTaker, the proxy is down so the servers when offline 20 minutes before time, better say something out there before they burn down the forumsö said Issuldorf. ôOk, ok, I will, what happened, by the way?ö asked HorseCareTaker. ôOh it was nothing, my stupid assistance unplugged the power cord from the proxy server.ö replied Issuldorf. ôDamn it. Is there anything we can do to prevent that in the future?ö asked HorseCareTaker. ôSure, if we had a few more spare cables around, it wouldnÆt have happened.ö said Issuldorf. ôGreat, I will make sure we got a least 2 more extra cables there to prevent that from happening again. That way we can rest the players, ok I am going to write a statement describing what happened, and what we have done to prevent it in the future, bye.ö said HorseCareTaker.

Man! Do you have any idea what it takes to operate a large cluster? They don't have just one box running Windows 2000 Server.
Think of all the problems that you have experienced with the one (maybe two if you don't have a life) computers you have seeing in your house. Now multiply that by 100 to 500 computers that their admin group has to keep running with the 40,000+ lusers that are pounding the hell out of each and every day!
File your petitions to get your ships replaced, quit *****ing about the downtime, and give the admin group a round of applause for keeping the game running as well as it does! It's not an easy job, but because of all the negitive posts, it's a thankless one.

They will pick up the ball, put it in their pocket, and carry it off the court and say 'thems the breaks bud'. (note that I say this having had my own 'boot.ini' file deleted by that bug and having had 24 hours of frustration fixing it)
However...
Priceless data should in no way, shape or form, ever reside on only ONE data storage system. Hardware can fail and you have to deal with fire or theft as well.
The loss of a boot.ini files does NOT destroy the data on a hard drive, it prevents a computer from booting. Choosing to reformat wipes your data.
NO computer that operates a business or has vital data on it should EVER run games.
If you want to know what CCP REALLY did wrong then? They broke a programming commandment in the original code base of EVE, one that stretches back to the 80's if not earlier. It reads more or less like this:
In order to avoid possible disaster, confusion or simple bad luck, it is of vital importance that no file ever be created that has the same name as a system file.

I had to shut down the computer and reboot. Tried again no luck. It sounds like it's fixed now, so I think everyone should just calm down. It's only a game. I still have to move all my stuff..

congrats to ccp for running an online game for 40000+ users as smoothly as they do, maintaining any computer system is a full time job. i would like all the people out there to think about how bloody often the game just works and in my experience runs smoothly. computers break, on occasion someone makes a mistake all of which is usually fixed exceptionally quickly.
once again to the guys in the back room at ccp good job merry christmas and wll done.

I don't get paid to run my computers at home, they do.

keep up the good work!

Unless you are somehow perfect and never make a mistake or think you can do a better job at maintaining this game I suggest you shut the **** up.
Other people who are now ****ed because the server went into downtime just a little sooner should stop taking this game so damn seriously. Come on...

Hi,
To people that blame CCP for lost data due to the Boot.ini Where is your backup? It is know in the world of IT, and a mostly general not IT oriented community that before you install anything new on your Pc. (IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN BACKED UP!!!!) The only one to blame is your self.
 Over and out.

I have heard from a very reliable source that an new employee brought his cat to work in the serverpark. I guess someone forgot to tell him about the poor hamsters. To prove this we can watch the ongoing battle down south. It clearly points to a lack of hamsters....

Hear, hear!
When I screw up at work, not only do I get a world of grief from my coworkers, but I also get people calling up to scream at me. Why? Because I am paid to not screw up, since it causes problems for other people. And guess what? I don't screw up often--I am paid to do it right.
So, as nice as it is that the sysops get so much support here, we are paying for a service that we expect to work. And we have the right to be a little peeved if someone screws up.
So think about that before all of you jump on me, screaming that I should "STFU" or whatever.

That so reminds me of an incident where a colleague in our system room asked: "I always wondered what that big red button was for ..." And he actually pressed it.
Now everbody knows that this is the UPS emergency shutdown button. We had a laugh .... after we tared and feathered him.

What I'd like to know is, how can 22 battleships and assorted support all sitting around a station as the unintended downtime occur (shooting services might I add) end up up to 30au away once getting back on after downtime, with the services REPPED, and another POS previously with all structures incap'ed REPPED???
AND, then the useless petition squad stating "Sorry, here is your canned message because we can't find **** in the logs"?
Explain that one.

Erm, well only a monkey would pull the plug early, there should be processes in place to stop this kind of thing yet they have had this problem a good few times over the last 2 years.
Don't give me that BS because anyone with half a brain can do a data centre job, processes need to be followed and I hope the person who did bring the cluster down gets training at least.
I WILL do a better job if they hire me, its what I do anyway :p

I'm almost speechless at the hostility being dished out towards CCP here.
To all you stupid ****ers who lost 'priceless' data, learn how to do a backup you bunch of morons. What if you had a power cut which corrupted your filesystem? What if you had a drive crash? Stop ******* whinging and get a ******* clue.
And as for fire the bloke who made a mistake and bought the cluster down. I manage a group of systems admins who manage over 3000 servers. You show me one systems administrator (a real one - someone who manages unix clusters <and gave you Trinity ahead of schedule hmmm?>, not the one who runs your poxy 10 client windows network in your office) who hasn't made a mistake that caused downtime in his entire career and I'll eat my dog.
**** me. Honestly.
Edited to add: And if you think that 15 bucks a month buys you any sort of network service with a 100% SLA, I'd be ******* astounded to hear of it. I suppose you demand your ISP fire their systems admins when your DSL goes down? Hmmm?

I like pie. Do you?
If you do, can a GM give me some pie ingame?
I don't do drugs... sort of.

Originally by: NEMO AUS congrats to ccp for running an online game for 40000+ users as smoothly as they do, maintaining any computer system is a full time job. i would like all the people out there to think about how bloody often the game just works and in my experience runs smoothly. computers break, on occasion someone makes a mistake all of which is usually fixed exceptionally quickly.
once again to the guys in the back room at ccp good job merry christmas and wll done.
Agreed, however...
I propose that this CCP computer operator be sentenced to: 1. Playing one hour of EVE Online, enforced by their employer CCP. 2. They are in their own corporation at war with everyone else. 3. The station that they wake up in auto undocks them every 1 minute. 4. They can fly any non capital ship of their choice.
The time and place of this sentance to be announced on the news at least 3 days prior.
Anyone like this idea...?
ps. Vote [1] ONE for One Skill Queue (OSQ).
