In this case it might be better to get as far away from the game as posible and just go on backstory.

lol, I'm still working on this story.
The story involves a freighter pilot and his crew back during the time of the EVE Gate collapse (just before it). Between work, playing EVE, and writing it and other multitudes of things, I'm actually about just over half done.
There was an old thread I posted with bits and pieces of the start back in the videos, interviews, and docs forum but I've long lost the link since.
I will tell you though, the story is being worked on. :)
(And there will be capsuleers as well)

I suspect the WOW movie is going to be very sucessful.
Anyone remember how well the wing commander movie went? And that was actually decent.
Although one possible plotline that no one has mentioned is maybe the story can be from the amarr empires perspective and they are fighting against the unhuman jove who want to put their people and the other human race's people into dastly pods.

It's all about the having the right people for the job. Uwe Boll has in some inexplicable manner managed to grab most game licenses open for the world of movies, and therefore marked such conversions with a huge FAIL.
I have high hopes for the Warcraft movie though, as the studio involved in its creations have a good repertoire, and I am convinced that EVE would make a great movie/tv show if it only was created by the right people.

I'm not going to start talking about the huge production cost in making an Eve-movie, which is pure SF and mainly CGI.
But one can dream. I asked that question once in a live dev chat, but didn't get an anser. So are the secretly making one or do they just haven't thought about it.
Anyway, If you want a director to give eve the tribute it deserves only a few come to mind:

As said, i think pod pilots would work in a movie if the whole movie didn't take place in them. The backstory tells us that pilots can and do get out of their pods while in stations, something which ambulation will enforce when it gets here
Hopefully the movie world would have the harsh gritty feel that eve puts forward mixed with the healthy paranoia that the players add all by themselves.....Trust no one is practicaly the first commandment of the game afterall :)
Strangely enough, in my mind I see the in-station sequences with a Bladerunner/ Firefly feel.. used, dirty and realistic (but without bladerunners constant rain of course :P). Space should be the same, no pristinely shiny ships everywhere you look, show the damage and repairs of old battles etc etc.
And as for fleet battles.......there HAS to be one scene where the fleet warps in and the FC screams " IT'S A TRAP!!!" just for gits and shiggles :D

I think the major conflicts (amarr-minmatar/caldari-gallente) are to immense to cover in one movie. Maybe it would be easier to filmatize one of the short stories?
