World of Warcraft is getting its own movie, why not Eve?
How would you like to see it done? What kind of director could do it justice? And what would the plot of the movie be? Perhaps..
The Gallente-Caldari war, and/or the Amarr reclaiming and downfall at the hands of the Jove. Or maybe the rise of first pod pilots?
I wonder if it would be completely ruined like the Wing Commander movie, the way they completely erased the look and feel of the game genre and started from square one. I think the look and feel of the EVE universe with its ships, stations and quirks would be right at home on the big screen. Even better on IMAX.
Perhaps the movie could be based on the real player-driven universe with the rise and decline of BOB like the Roman empire.
I think it would generate good revenue through royalties for CCP and be a brilliant marketing strategy to attract new players. What say the citizens of New Eden?

They would need 4 movies, each longer than the last Lord of the Rings to tell it all, so I'd say no movie(s)

Movie -> videogame usually = win. I know it never really works the other way around, but I can dream.

Yeah, the cinema would lag out and crash with all the people blobbing in. When the chaos was over everybody's belongings would be gone.

In the sci-fi department:
Star Wars, Jedi Knight, Knights of the Old Republic, Empires at War. Star Trek: Armada, Bridge Commander, Starfleet Command, many others.
Most action movies have spawned decent games in recent years, like:
Die Hard Terminator James Bond Series Scarface Alien/Predator
Most games that are turned into movies fail due to lack of a decent game plot in the first place, or a crappy perversion of the original game's plot. There's one game that I can't imagine being screwed up if turned into a movie, and that's Halflife.

Edited by: Jezala on 02/01/2008 00:51:49 The only plot line that I can think of in the Eve universe that is movie worthy is the fall and rise of RA/Goonswarm. The game lore can't hold a candle to the players' alliance history of the last year or so.

I actually think that EVE would make a better movie than World of Warcraft... I mean EVE has a MUCH richer history and backstory than WoW, not even counting player created history...

actually, thinking about it, with all I hear on ts, this is practically a movie anyway. but I think it could work out actually.
Tom Cruise as Cyvok. Samuel L Jackson as evil thug.
Plot is based around the major turning events of the south. Heavily based on the strategy used. Flown starfighter style for cinematic affect. Large fleets of battleships shown with individual crews all flying in formation to attack posses. Dreadnoughts and titans. OMG OMG, I just came in my pants.

eve would make a great movie.
becuaise video game equals a bad movie
MMORPG however... I think the openended sandbox of eve would make for a great story as there is no linear one player story to follow.

Could be neat if it was made as a triology with the classic fantasy story advancement. The main character starts as a frigate pilot and advances troughout the movie, starting with small skirmish and culminating in the last movie in a giant fleetfight (without lag and turned off effects - woot) with DDD and the whole package.
Another kewl way would be like Crash, where you follow different people in different yet related situations.
I don't see why an EVE film is a bad idea, EVE is so open ended and fleshed out that it could turn out decent.

I'd probably read a book that had the Eve backstory to it, not sure what the storyline could be though..
But a movie would be overkill, and would have so many chances to be lame. Done perfectly it would be amazing though. An Eve-Starwars.

I think it would work best following multiple characters that end up in the same situation in the end quarter of the movie. Like from the GNW to the siege of EC or so. ___ P.S. Post with your main. Mind control and tin hats |

if they were like the halo short films ive seen, then it would be pretty cool.
however, i honestly dont think the eve-online population has the talent, determination, resourcefulness, aesthetic style, and editing chops to pull it off.
cutting corners is what eve-players do best. and when they arent cutting corners, they do what everybody else does.
and the process of making a film - even a short film - is anti-thetical to that "philosophy".
better to leave it in the hands of professionals. which is to say - a movie will never be made; let alone a "good" one because the "professionals" are too busy working.

Dont underestimate gamers, especially the ones in eve...Because one thing ive seen in eve vs other games is the debates dont go towards"its magical,"they towards"well the formula (1.24*5)+(1/3*5)etc". Signature removed. Contains no Eve content. Navigator ([email protected]) |

mathematical aptitude is not evidence for creative drive or creative "skill".
if that were true, andy warhol would have solved for x, and russel crowe would have played him in a movie; instead he painted campbell soup cans, and is portrayed in >dozens< of movies.
as it stands, the eve-online population as a whole cant get it together for something as demanding as a short film.
and im not talking about one of those banal, one-joke wonder fraps that get distributed but, you know, a sincere effort to make a quality short film.

Don't see how you could make an EVE movie. This isn't the 1920's. People expect movies to have sound.

a movie about the "rich" player-created history in eve.. uhm.. no.
However, turn the eve-novels into a string of one-hour-series, then hell yeah.
Then it would go places, theres so much potential in the backstories that you could probably make a full 2 hour blockbuster out of each and every one of them.
but.. about the players? hell no.
As for directors.. hmm well david lynch would be a good start. (imagine what Dune would have been like with today's fx )
guest directors like romero, clive barker and the likes would be perfect for some of the novels (methods of torture f.oi)
my thoughts on the matter anyway.

Yes but if some eve players have that mathematical skill then there are probably others that can produce movies well...Eve players seem to have more intelligence then most other mmorpgs. Signature removed. Contains no Eve content. Navigator ([email protected]) |
