Hello all the wise ones of the boards, I have a question regarding the interceptor, taranis in particular, and web. Why do you fit web on the ranis? In my opinion, if an interceptor got web, it's a dead interceptor. Wouldn't it be wiser to fit just scram and something else and orbit outside of web range and survive? BTW, this question is for interceptor in small gang, not solo. IMO, inceptor is not a solo ship.
Thank you so much in advance for any answer.

So you can kill other inties, sacrifice for a nano ship tackle etc.

Edited by: James Lyrus on 10/01/2008 22:24:27 'blasteranis does 200ish dps at 2km.
If you're getting that close, then you need a web. And actually, if you're getting that close, it's entirely possible to maintain transverse, simply because your orbital radius is so much lower. Even when webbed. 10x less speed, 10x smaller orbit = same transversal.
You can't disengage at that point, of course, which is why people don't tend to do it much any more, but don't underestimate the impact of an actually really high DPS ship closing up and being near unhittable.
Also - sometime webbing them is really useful too, in a gang support roles. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

Yah web is for catching inty's or Nano's without the Minny Recons. The short range ultra fast inties are usally great for gangs bad for solo.

A web is essential to stop ships from getting to the gate and jump - because that's what they'll try to do... You really need webbers.

Each race has two interceptors, a tackler and a killer. A tackler is meant to tackle any ship, with their new bonuses you can be out of web range/nos. range which adds to your survivability against ships that you otherwise can't kill on your own. In the case of the Gallente, the Taranis is the killer and it's implied that you will be using blasters and a web (though you can get creative and try rails if you want). You have to be more selective about your targets, solo you can kill other interceptors, frigates, some destroyers, some cruisers and some AFs. In groups you are even more deadly. But the fact is that if you are not confident you can kill it in a flat out slug fest, don't get inside web range.
Yes, you should run a web on a Taranis. No you should not engage everyone within web range.
A large part of PvP is target selection. People who say that getting in web range with a ceptor is suicide either have exceptionally bad luck (like the time a Badger MkII killed my Crow) or are not good at selecting targets.

A web on a ranis can be useful as stated above. However, I would never in a million years stick on my my Ares. Taranis isn't really built for speed, its more of a speed+dps combination, so be sure to pick the right ship for what you want to do. When you're going over 8kps in an Ares, fitting a web is just silly

Already mentioned but if something larger than you that using turrets webs you, you can web back. This will prevent them from flying away and outrange you. It will also allow you to manually orbit them at even closer distances which will make them miss you.

Also, keep in mind that if you're up against something that is far slower and you get into trouble, if they're webbed and you're webbed you can usually set your orbit outside of web range and get there relatively quickly and simply MWD to safety, just remember to set the orbit beyond web range and not simply fly away in order to keep transversal up.

I went solo vs a blasteranis and he took my Sabre to half shields before I podded him - but he was double webbed and at my optimal.
I was *REALLY* surprised at just how much damage he was dealing. I'd probably orbit further out next time.

neutron 'ranis?
well to be fair, even a tanked ion 'ranis would fall to a Sabre. However, half shields is something that you should expect vs the taranis, when you consider blasters with faction AM and the 2 T2 warriors ---

Yeah, it was a neutron 'ranis. The sheer amount of damage applied from a frig was just a little bit offsetting... hehe.

I fit a web on my stiletto but I'm kind of suicidal when it comes to flying interceptors, it depends what I'm trying to do 90% of the time I'll be outside web range but if it's a nanoed up HAC or something I can fly in close web him and watch the rest of my gang blow him out the sky so that gives me some satisfaction...

if you manage to get that crow in your web range, the crow is dead. simple as.
the hard part however is managing to put the crow inside the web range of the slowest inty of the game ---

In my experience Domination Web + Overheat is totally OP while flying a Crow.
For any and all ceptors (except ranis, usually takes a few more to get past hull. They just don't expect to get webbed at 19km, so they leave their MWD on going 'wtf?'. That + a few volleys + fat sig = dead ceptor. If I can't overheat for long I just cruise down to 15km.
Originally by: IHeartYou However, Crows seem to suit me best because it's just so much fun to toy with your target, then own them with your 150-200dps.

Edited by: atrophocy on 11/01/2008 11:05:02 the way i see the taranis, you've got two options [<3 trinity ceptor buff, made gallente tacklers viable]
1. Suicide Gank ceptor
blasters, web scram mwd, magstab and whatever else takes your fancy in the lows.
This thing demolishes other ceptors in record time, if you can get em webbed. it's more like a nano assault frigate. dps is off the scale for a ceptor. Can be very very effective in gangs, but will die alot as you are engaging at point blank range and will get webbed and instapopped alot. Great in big fights cos you can sneak up on enemy ceptors and have them webbed and dead before they know whats going on also put out great dps for taking out bigger targets in gangs.
2. tackler taranis.
125mm rails, mwd, cap recharger, disruptor, overdrives/nano
will go 5.2km/s or so with decent skills, is cap sustainable as long as you dont shoot too much and can engage at 15-20km comfortably and keep a point. does great dps for a tackler while having pretty decent survivability. Obviously no need for a web here. This option has only really become viable since Trinity as previously you had to drop your speed mods for cap mods so you didnt cap out in 10 seconds flat.
So, for the OP, i'd say you definitely have to consider your role in the gang and what other ships you'll be flying with and against and decide what is best for you. I'd really recommend flying both and getting a good feel for them. great little ship.

Prob with crows is that now with the reduction in cap usage of scrams you get them fitting webs as well so all that will happen is he'll stay at 10km and still kill you. Just have to hope you picked a fight with one of the ones that isn't packing a web.

it most certainly does. but it also does very little else. The taranis can be a viable tackler while still doing some decent damage. in small gangs you want tacklers that pack a punch, not a disruptor with an mwd. besides, taranis looks cooler

You can pull of suprisingly hard things in a taranis, and 2-3 of them in packs are just totally overkill.
Webb is there just to hold the enemy down, to use rails and stay out far might sound like a good idea, but wont grant you those very nice Battlecruiser solo kills :D instead go in hard with ions and a trimark HP tank or gank-style and you got yourself a real killer, way outclassing all the other inties at killing bigger ships without having to use 10 of them.
Hell i got some friends i use to fly with that have soloed battleships in a taranis, and in packs of 2-3+ battleships are a piece of cake, though we have spend the past 1.5 years in taranises atleast, and the best got 15 mil + SP in gunnery alone. So it will require skills on pilot and character side. But it is indeed possible, though hard To get it to work like a charm add ECM drones and a well coordinated team that you trust and know what they are doing, and your set.
Also: torp-raven dmg on a tarans at 500m = PATHETIC -----------------------------

Edited by: Sean Faust on 11/01/2008 17:44:33 Getting a crow webbed in a taranis is not hard if he does what crow pilots typically do, which is to orbit you from outside web range and pelt you with missiles. Don't set an orbit or try to approach them, just try and calculate where they will be at a specific point in their orbit and meet them there manually =). Its a trick that a corp mate of mine who flies blaster fitted taranises almost exclusively taught me and it works. I haven't had much success with it myself yet but thats because I haven't had a lot of practice, but it works for him almost 100% of the time and he seldom, if ever, loses to crows 1v1 in his taranis.
One thing you have to bear in mind when engaging a crow in a taranis is that almost every crow you engage will be faction fitted, and it is the only ceptor that people really fit like that. So you will probably far outgeared by most crows you engage, but that doesn't change the fact that almost all use the same highly predictable strategy.
As far as non-crow opponents go =P, your best friend if you don't know other races' ships well is these forums. Learn about common fittings for all ships, and which ships do and dont fit webs. Learn the taranis's weaknesses and learn what ships are commonly fitted in ways that exploit those weaknesses.
And don't ever try to engage a gallente drone ship in a taranis =P or any pvp fitted gallente ship at all really (with a few exceptions of course). I can't count how many times I went into lowsec with a cheaply fitted vexor (my level 2 mission ship) and ate some poor inty pilot alive who tried to screw with me.

TBH, either his gunnery skills sucked or he didn't fit a MSE. You simply can't deal enough damage to take a dual web/MSE Sabre to structure before it pops you. Also, the dual web really does give him a significant advantage of range if he wants it.
All of that said: the Taranis is dangerous - and if underestimated, it very well might kill you. I harmlessly learned my lesson. ;-)
