Captains of New Eden. This is Kelsy Talan. Yes, the Kesly Talan. I've no doubt you've heard my beautiful music before, but anyway, enough of that titter-tatter. I've come here to seek assistance from *A snarl forms on her face* You lot. Where would I go about beginning my business to further my fortunes and influence in the skies? Nobody has thought to give me any indication, nor attention that I most certainly deserve. Who knows, I might even grant the person that gives me the most useful information a signed holoreel of one of my shows. Now wouldn't that be delightful?
It's not like you people have anything better to do with your lives other than to answer this question.

Kelsy Talan?
Opera singer right? Tanet? Luminaire V?
I was always more of a fan of Cecile De'Lare to be honest, she has a much stronger voice and a lot better pitch.
Oh by the way, I'd drop the attitude here. Your mouth will get you killed faster than you can blink.

Greetings and welcome to the world of the capsuleer. I hope you have a spine to back up your Academy diploma and some heavy artillery to back up your ego, because it gets nasty out here.
In the interests of politeness, I'm going to offer you a few basic starting tips.
1) Lose the ego. You have that 'Fresh out of the academy' feel about you, and you might think you're a big name in Gallente music but you're small out here. Talking down to the wrong people can and will get you killed, swiftly, especially when those 'wrong people' are flying assault cruisers or battleships.
2) Find yourself a profession. You can trade, build, mine, or shoot things for your money out here. Figure out what you want to do, then do it and, most importantly, specialize in it. Money you make in music is nothing to a veteran capsuleer's income.
3) Pay attention to politics. They matter out here, especially in all things involving the Amarr, as some groups like Ushra'Khan will shoot anyone that has anything to do with the Amarr, no matter how tenuous the interaction. Even flying around Domain or especially Providence is enough to get them (Ushra'Khan) to attack you. While most other groups are more forgiving, it helps to know this information before you find yourself warp-scrambled by a pack of pirates, terrorists, or other ne'er-do-wells.
4) Low-security is no-security. If Concord doesn't patrol it, be paranoid, because someone might very well shoot you for the fun of it. Especially with an attitude like that.
5) Never take anything at face value. What happens on GalNet and what's actually happening are usually pretty far from each other. PIE is the best example - Judging by GalNet you would think them to be weak, incompetent, and ineffectual. A bit of investigation reveals, however, that most of that false appearance comes from the mouthes of people that PIE has marginalized, destroyed, or otherwise dealt with who are simply attacking PIE the only way that is safe for them.
6) Find an employer. The good employers are those who will teach you the ropes of your profession, as well as the tricks behind being a capsuleer in general. The best ones will also teach you about the politics of the region and the trouble spots that are best avoided, things that 'outsiders' to that area wouldn't know. I believe Lord Archbishop of PIE runs a program for the Gallente, to educate them on a wide variety of important matters. It would be a good place to start.
Welcome to the Cluster. Don't do anything stupid and you should be fine.

Say the people with the guns. Which is most of the capsuleer community.
Oh, and if you feel that's how people deserve to be spoken to, then expect it back tenfold here kiddo.
I trust you'll do well in the capsuleer community. The market for biomass from dead rookies is pretty rife inside federal borders.
So yeah, I'd love to continue to talk to you, really, but I feel i'm losing IQ points to your sheer idiocy as I'm doing so.
I really don't want to drop too many, I've got more to remember than three verses and a quick chorus to the sound of a deranged Jin-Mei midget beating a polycarbon housing with a wooden pole.
A few deaths will bring you down from your perch, and you'll soon get over the notion that your corpses are probably being used as playthings after your death, i'm sure.
Oh, I reccomend PF-346 as a destination for your first capsuleer interaction, you'll soon see what our world is about then. It's right off orvolle, can't miss it. It's the black one with twinkly bits.

Lose your attitude, Missy. Talking down to people will get you killed right quick. Feel free to drop me a line in your pod interface (after you learn how to do that, obviously) and I'll be willing to help you get your footing so you don't find out how harsh stuff is the hard way.

What I do believe Verone means, is that your corpse isn't worth much more than what he incinuated. Did you pay attention in your pod pilot training at all as to what happens when your pod *****s and you float in space? No? That can change really fast with your attitude here, if you like.

My dear...
First and foremost, if you wish to make your fortune amongst "This Lot", I would suggest the following.
Stop smoking and drinking champagne. Get out and make a name for yourself... in your Capsule. Stop asking for assistance and give it. Stop relying on what little fame you had on your homeworld.
Cold? Maybe. But it is as good as you "deserve". Everything else you must "earn". If you have not realized already, "This Lot" that exist amongst the stars are rather... how should I put this? Numb to the pleas and cries of a young pseudo-starlet trying to improve her image? Yes, that is perhaps the best way to put it.
I do wish you luck, and success. However I must say I'm not very optimistic in either regard.
Oh, and welcome to New Eden. Enjoy your stay, and remember kids: Boosters are Bad!

Ms. Talan;
I congratulate you on your graduation from the academy. Yes, I have heard of you as my Gallente mother immersed me into much of the Gallente culture. We are however not on a Gallente world now but in the cold reaches of space. Here the only music that plays often is the staccato of Lasers, Railguns, Blasters, Autocannons, ect.
Just as you were once unknown in the music industry, you are now unknown here. Frankly not many care who you were or are, just how good you are in a fight. You have come across as snobbish with a 'look down' attitude so many are a bit offended. I am a Minmatar, that attitude rolls off me as water off a Spruce Duck.
Seek out agents and begin by running missions or simply mine. Decide what you wish to accomplish and with the money earned buy the appropriate skill packs needed. Always keep training skills. As you earn more ISK you will be able to afford better ships and equipment, always insure for the max amount.
Repeat as needed. One day find a good corporation that will take you in. By that time you will no longer need any aid to figure out the next steps.
Take care and please show some respect for those that may have spent more time in a pod than you have singing.

Guess your skull is a little thick for that huh?
Here's the strait word, in space, you're not a star, your a target, and until you prove yourself you're a particularly mouthy target which is going to make most of us all the more vindictive, and most of us fly ships that will tear through anything you can afford much less fly before you could even shoot back. Out here in the black your just another rookie, and if you don't realize that it's going to go alot harder for you, if you really want to learn how to hold your own, look me up in space and ask nicely, I might just help you, mouth off like you have been, and I'll shoot you myself.

One of my ventures is a little nightclub in the Wirashoda system, the Guiding Hand Social Club. If the esteemed miss Talan would consider an appearance there, to treat my clientele to a few hours of her delightful song, I'm sure I'd be all too happy to share a few tricks of my trade in exchange. Admittedly it is a far smaller venue than a star of your caliber is accustomed to, certainly nowhere near the million-capacity amphitheaters of Luminaire, but I do hope our humble establishment may some day be graced by the likes of Kelsy Talan.

Newsflash, M Talan - you're just another celebrity in a world of celebrities now. We are pod pilots, the immortal rising stars. Even the least of us has a fan club somewhere.
And I can honestly claim never to have heard a single note of your music. I'm sure it's lovely but seriously - can the attitude. You're no more important than the rest of us nowadays.
as for fame - identify something that nobody's ever done before, and do it first. Examples would include Chribba's high-sec mining dreadnought, SirMolle for being the head of the most politically significant alliance ever founded and Tank CEO for....

I never thought I'd ever agree with Verone, but I do here. Seriously, Talan-haani, you're coming across as a big-headed naive fool. Talking down to people and near-as-dammit calling them 'scum' will only get people's backs up.
Now, lose that attitude and you may just live for more than two minutes. There are some seriously nasty and unpleasant individuals out here with even more unpleasant guns and ships bigger than your ego could ever hope to be. ---

It's called 'common courtesy.' Now, you may dislike the 'common' part of it but it's needed to denote how regularly it is employed by people. You may think you're big on your homeworld, but out here I'm afraid that YOU ARE NOTHING. One of the many, one of the ultimately forgotten.

Can you clarify please - what is it exactly that you do because in all honesty I have not heard of you before today. You claim to be a singer but I am not so sure. You say you improve moods for a price and "perform" for a living. What is it that you are looking for? A stage with a pole or a Sugar Daddy perhaps? Alice will not be pleased if she hears of this as it is her stout belief that we should never use our sex to gain a free ride and trinkets from men. And you, Achuran. Who are you to tell me how I should alter myself? I am exquisite just as I am.
Who am I? I am Megumi Sophia Iwasaki, youngest daughter of Admiral Toshiro Iwasaki of the Caldari Navy. Sister of Captain Ichigo Iwasaki, also of the Caldari Navy. My family have been serving in the navy since the ancient battle of Tsushima back on Earth thousands of years ago. I have been in space since I was 17 when I enrolled at the State War Academy. I have operated against numberless pirates within state space. I was at the CVA defence of their starbases in Providence, supporting their defensive fleet with vital E-war equipment thus giving interceptor squadrons an additional edge. I am Achuran. I am Caldari. I am proud to be both.
As for you, who are you? A self-centred Gallente diva who thinks that just because some people were misguided enough to purchase your music that she has the right to talk down to people who have been in the depths of space longer than you have had a career. You waltz in here, proclaim your brilliance and then expect people to fall down and kiss your painted little toes, worshipping your every breath and step.
Well, here's a newsflash - it's not going to happen. Very few people out here have any time for posturing, hot-air and arrogance in the face of naivity. I admit that I haven't been an independent pod-pilot for long, but I have been around long enough to know that elevating oneself into a position of importance that you haven't earned is likely to gain you many more enemies than friends. The real problem is that many of those enemies have very, very big guns.
Any of my friends will tell you that I have little time for Gallente in the first place. I have even less time for idiots. Sadly you have fallen into both categories. I suppose you're wondering why I'm even wasting my time arguing. After all, one should never argue with a fool for they are doing the same.
However, whilst I dislike Gallente at the best of times, outright weapons-grade idiocy such as what you have displayed in this comm channel ranks as far worse.
There are many people I will admit to disliking. Verone and Evanda Char are two names that spring instantly to mind. However, my dislike of them does not preclude deserved respect. They have the respect that one would give to any foe.
It is this basic respect that you have utterly, completely and totally failed to demonstrate. Calling the assembled community of pod pilots 'you lot,' 'you people' and 'riff-raff' is hardly the attitude of one who has respect for others. Nor indeed will it garner the support and information that you so crave. In fact, it is far more likely to do the exact opposite.
I have no animosity towards you. In fact, I am putting my own - somewhat irrational - dislike of Gallente to one side in order to try and pull you back from the black abyss of pain and self-destruction that you seem so intent on diving into.

Well, a strong sense of self-confidence is a prerequisite mental trait for a capsule pilot...
Overwhelming arrogance may be going a bit too far, however. Captain Talan, seriously, you need to come to accept that all of the people you are talking to are every bit as "important" as you claim to be. Every last one of us is a celebrity, a mythical figure that the average human will never glimpse outside of GalNet broadcasts.
Your "better than you" attitude is the sole cause for the amount of flak you're receiving. If you were to treat us with the same respect that you feel entitled to, you would find us a much more civil and welcoming bunch. At the moment, however, your prima donna act is just setting people's backs up, and making them say mean things.

If you'll notice, I never threatened you at all. If I came across as threatening then I apologise. I have tried to be nice within reason. There are however limits to my patience.
However, your disdain for people's prowess with weapons is sadly misguided. Those that can shoot strait and fast are the ones that are more likely to survive out here. 'Lowering yourself to our standards' is something that you're going to have to do sooner or later. Otherwise, you'll find space a highly unpleasant place to live. Wordsmiths, whilst political animals, find themselves rather physically impotent when they inevitably run into trouble.
I suspect that your issue is really the fact that people have been hurling abuse at you since you opened your mouth and communicated. But is it really that surprising given your first words here?

Time to dissect this a little, if you would indulge me.
Quote:
I've come here to seek assistance from *A snarl forms on her face* You lot.
Pay attention to the words I've highlighted: You lot.
Now really, is that any way to endear yourself to the local populace? Particularly in the way you said it. Do you go on stage whilst on tour and refer to the people who have paid to see you perform as 'you lot' in the same way? I hope not, because if you do it's a wonder you have any fans at all.
[qoute] Nobody has thought to give me any indication, nor attention that I most certainly deserve.
On what basis do you deserve the attention that you think you do? I've done some snooping and have found out that you're rather well known on your homeworld - understandably - and on nearby planets. This area covers three star systems I believe, I may be wrong. Last time I checked there were over five thousand star systems that we as a species populate. In other words, you're famous in three of five thousand star systems.
This means that - assuming an equal population distribution, which I know isn't the case but it simplifies things - you are famous and well known to less than 1% of the total population.
Therefore it stands to reason that few of us would actually know who you are.
Quote:
It's not like you people have anything better to do with your lives other than to answer this question.
Actually, many of us have far better and more important things to do than respond to your demands. In my case I am regularly employed by the Caldari Navy to conduct dedicated anti-pirate sweeps amongst other things. In Verone's case he feels that shooting unarmed transports a viable use of his time.
Also, again the use of the words 'you people' comes across as arrogant.
I hope that I've managed to make things a little clear to you, Talan-haani. If not, and you decide to continue down the road you have chosen with the same attitude, then things are highly unlikely to go your way.
In fact, the most likely result will be you getting turned into space debris. ---

The problem is, Talan-haani, and what you're failing to see, is that they're responding in the same way that you initially addressed them - with disdain.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The same goes with the way you speak to people. If you speak coldly and disdainfully to somebody, then it stands to reason that they will speak to you in the same way. I myself never presume to judge what people may have meant, only what they have actually said.
What you say and what you mean can often be two completely seperate things. You may have not meant to come across as arrogant, self-righteous and haughty, but the fact remains that to many of the people here - myself included - that is exactly how you came across.
The gift of a great speaker is their ability to modulate and adjust their speech and turns of phrase to the people that they are talking to. If I'm talking to a superior officer, I use 'sir' or 'ma'am' - dependent on gender - and I speak respectfully and correctly despite what I may think of the individual personally.
On the flipside, if I'm talking to my elder brother I wouldn't be so formal. I'd lace my speech with flippant insults and attempt to deflate his sometimes overbearing ego. This is despite the fact that he outranks me, and I certainly wouldn't do it in an official communication.
What I'm trying to say is this: Your manner of speech, whilst it may seem natural to you, will get people's backs up. You have repeatedly come across as talking down to people who have been out here longer than you. Nobody likes some greenhorn with nearly zero experience telling them what to do. I wouldn't dream of trying to tell you how to sing, as I am not a professional singer.
However, listen to people like Verone. They've been out in space far longer than you or I. They've seen everything, done everything and thus we could benefit from their words of 'wisdom.' Though of course, what counts as wisdom is purely subjective. I wouldn't listen to what Verone had to tell me as our personal philosophies are totally opposite. However, I would listen to Lt. Cmdr. Marithin Sanalis. Partly because he is a personal friend of mine but mainly because he is a highly experienced pod-pilot and there are many things he can teach me.
There are things that I could teach you, Talan-haani, if you would listen. However, the holier-than-thou attitude that you are displaying - intentionally or otherwise - will get you more death threats than offers to help.
Bottom line is: I am willing to help and guide you, despite what dislike I have for Gallente. I will gladly teach you what I can, and at the very least try and point you in the right direction. That is, if you wish me to. ---

Ms. Talan:
For the time being, let's set aside issues of common courtesy or, for that matter, reciprocal regard, respect, and politeness.
You're a capsuleer, now. Congratulations are in order. The world you're stepping into exists an a completely different scale than the one you lived in previously, one in which millionaires frequently look impoverished and billionaires represent a sort of middle class.
It's also a world in which groups function at a rather higher level than individuals-- but in which groups are vulnerable to attack. Capsuleer corporations and, especially, alliances, function legally almost as sovereign nations. They can lay CONCORD-recognized claim to territory, declare war on other capsuleer entities, and have war declared on them. It's highly probable that you will, sooner or later, join such a corporation.
And this is where the potential problem in speaking with, shall we say, a brusque manner, even if it seems justified, can cause you and those close to you (capsuleer and crew alike) a dreadful amount of trouble.
Pirates, particularly those who double as mercenaries and who have access to hisec, are noted for their thirst for blood, their *****ly sensibilities, and the speed with which they take offense. There are beings out here who will declare multiple weeks of open war because they don't like the tone with which they're addressed. The death threats you've seen might be considered a taste of things to come, only here on IGS there's relatively little likelihood of a wardec going through as a result of some minor rudeness on your part. The same cannot be said of persons you might address in Local. And if you stir a violent reaction, everyone around you will suffer the consequences.
That being the case, if only for the sake of being able to promote yourself as a useful and beneficial pilot to have in one's corporation, you may wish to address your fellow pilots with a little more caution, if not regard. Unless you desire a very lonely career, the people most likely to suffer from your words are the people you will most want to like you.

Quite refreshing, honestly.

Edited by: Stitcher on 13/01/2008 23:05:51 That, unfortunately, is rather the point - you would have received just as much constructive advice and welcome from any one of us (with maybe a few possible exceptions) were it not for the fact that your inaugural message set everyone on edge.
We're used to fame and power, and being regarded as either celebrities or at least respected equals. Comments like "It's not like you people have anything better to do with your lives other than to answer this question. " and "I've come here to seek assistance from [snarl] You lot." tend to upset people, especially when they are entirely unprovoked.
I think the people here can hardly be blamed for finding your attitude more than a little bit annoying, Talan-haani. You did introduce yourself to the entire capsule community with a verbal slap in the face.
Treat us with the respect and civility we expect and deserve, and you will find support and friendship here. Continuing to maintain the delusion that you are somehow better than us simply because of your talent for holding a tune and, I will allow, not inconsiderable beauty would be a mistake however.
If you truly wish to succeed as a capsuleer, then my advice and assistance to you is to seek out and forge friendships with other pilots. Doing so will first involve learning how not to insult them the first time they meet you. -

In all seriousness he is right, rens definitely has more opportunity for a new pilot as well as far more security. I believe its a very quick journey if you come down via rancer - be sure to take advantage of the autopilot function my dear it does take a lot of the dross out of a long trip.

Glad your op went well! The Game was good, but the following accusations of tailored booster use is starting to get old now!
I think my platoon (Marine) may have been attatched to your Fathers command years ago, back when he was a Captain (Shows age [IMAGE REMOVED] ). Back then I was a young Lieutenant, never met him, but heard good things!
Ms Talan, one quick question? With all the smoking you seem to do you must have a singing voice like an old Brutor Dock worker. Do you think it's about time to quit?

Then let's bring on the constructiveness..
First of all, welcome to the life of being a capsuleer.. you'll either hate it, or love it, and which one you'll end up can be decided by many things. If you hadn't noticed already, we populate the biggest known entity around, space, and as such most of us do not care much for planet-side politics.. you are who you are and you will be treated like you are not... after all, in space nobody can hear you scream for mercy...
That set aside, your capsuleer training will have given you enough information on what is safe... everything NOT on that list you should deem unsafe.. including other capsuleers.
Now fly off, and get yourself blown up at least once.. as breaking legs isn't really an option when you're protected by your pod.
It was like a baby, it landed on my lap and was helpless and totally defenseless. Then I shot it and bragged about it on a killboard.

Aww, all this "useful" but somewhat tainted advice almost makes me feel loves by the other capsuleers. Sarcasm, for those that didn't understand, which I'll presume is the majority. Now this trade business, if Jita is the larger of the two for trade, what would be the point in avoiding it?!
And mr Flux, my smoking has never affected my singing voice. I can promise you that.
*The Gallentean waves the cigarette by the holder with a sneer on her face, eventually taking a drag from it*
I'll look forward to the responses.

Because the larger of the 2 trade hubs mean more competition of people constantly undercutting by 0.1 isk, heavy traffic and large amounts of high sec pirates that have no problem sacrificing their ship and crew to destroy your craft and have someone else come along and scoop up any remains.

sigh...
let's try this again, I as well as others here, have been trying to help you despite your attitude, I even offered to show you the ropes myself if you'd do me the courtesy of not insulting me for my trouble.
You've made claims about your piloting skill, well and good, the fact that you are a capsuleer at all puts you far above the average citizen's piloting ability, but the fact is that everyone you've so far insulted is at least that skilled, most if not all of them far more.
I've spent the majority of my career making my living beyond concord's jurisdiction. I've done a lot of unsavory things in the name of survival, and there are plenty more like me populating the space lanes. If you really want advice, where to start isn't important, anywhere is good, but talking down to people like me will get you killed, too many of us have done far worse things than to balk putting you out simply for having a bad attitude. ... Why do I PvP? Because I love the feeling I get when I see the pretty lights and know that someone somewhere is screaming incoherently at their computer screen. |

I would like to address another issue, as well.

Heyla Kelsy,
The need for musicians in space is limited at best. While I've busked for many corporations and individuals in the past, private contracts don't pay much. Saying that, I could get 10mil sometimes for a good performance.
Another musician who could inform you more would be Sae. While I'm a singer myself, Sae is a dj and she's performed in quite a few notable establishments, including La Maison De Tout Les Plaisirs, if my sources (and spelling) is right.
However, for the most part, most of us make our livings out here by gun and laser. While singing can be fun, it won't be what keeps you in that shiney ship, or two. Singing planetside will reign ya a mill isk a year if you're as good as you say you are (although I don't recall hearing about ya before), but out here, my bounty is as big as that and I'm embarrased by it.
Good luck - and I don't wish that often, but I know how hard a singer can struggle out here in space
Fly safe, I guess.

Ms. Talan;
Who you were no longer matters. You are now a capsuleer. Congrats on making the grade. However now you are a nothing to most all other capsuleers. You are a noob, newbie or new pilot. We don't care how you were raised, how much ISK you made from music. All we care about is a good fight and mutual respect. Yes Ms. Talan, respect.
Please don't choke upon that word. Respect is never free and you can't buy it. 9K platinum records gets you nothing in the respect department out here in the black. You are a nothing until you prove yourself.
Most new people play it smart and keep quiet until they train their skills up and upgrade to a better ship then that scrap heap the academy gave you. Not you though. You came across like the spoiled rotten diva you are and now people are ready to line up to gank your butt so they can epoxy your frozen corpse to the outside of their station cabins window.
Play smart and shut up. Do agent missions as you train skills and upgrade ships when possible. In a few months people will forget your attitude and you should be ok. All your talking is doing now is painting large concentric rings on any ship you fly.

Jealousy is a terrible thing, Miss Molanth.
I must say I'm surprised Tissa didn't issue a single insult at me in the last message. Realised that it's futile to attempt to change me? Yes? Good. I'v also noticed the threats of violence have changed to something a little lighter, taking note of the cake suggestion. If you must bake me a cake, make sure it's of a sufficient standard.
