This is from the patch. Hopefully in about 10-25 minutes you will be able to connect. |

That might be an unrelated issue. Have had it happen more than once (as I'm sure the majority in this thread have) on both of my machines. It usually means that something in your files got corrupted and the best fix is usually just to cry over all your screen prefs and game options being lost and then just reinstall the whole client... It's usually a good idea to keep a copy of the client setup program on hand for just such situations.
That said, I'd still wait on the restart of the servers and see if it fixes itself. If you are using Win2k it could be the error symptom you are getting from the bad patch.

edit: just restart client - and yes unrelated issue most prob

...... c'mon ccp, you can do better than this, basic client and patcher issues in a product that is more than 3 years old? I realize that with any software product there are mistakes made and you won't catch everything, but this is like delivering a car to a customer and forgetting to put in the ignition-lock cyclinder..... (with the boot.ini mess being like installing the engine backwards....)

Edited by: Angel DeMorphis on 17/01/2008 21:53:01 I haven't lost any skill training due to this; I was able to log in just after down time to switch skills, too. I care not that they tried and failed to implement a new patch technique. I'm in the business, I know how it goes. Heck, I wasn't even mad about the boot.ini issue. Like I said, I'm in the business, and I know what can happen, and they quickly got on the horse to provide the players with information on how to fix it in the short term until they finally announced a good solution. (Thankfully, I hadn't restarted the computer, partially due to the possibility of an issue like that.)
But today when I logged in, I got a notice that it was downloading a patch. No notice on the MOTD. Nothing in the patch notes. No information or news from CCP. Nothing. Many hours later, still no patch notes. The information beforehand is the most important. I'm not even talking about setting a long skill to train. Screw skill training. I want to know what and when I am downloading something out of the ordinary.
A trustworthy system only makes you download and install new programs when you okay it. I don't okay it by logging in. Spyware and malware downloads and runs new programs without your knowledge....
Am I'm whining and complaining? You better believe it. This is unacceptable. (Heh, now I suppose I should mention something about closing my 23 accounts?)
EDIT: Note, I'm not whining about something not working/breaking. I'm not whining that the patch failed to do what they wanted or even caused some to not be able to log in. I'm whining that we're getting a patch forced down our throats with no info whatsoever. And what about when they do stealth patches like this that affect gameplay and still have no patch notes? Yeah, not cool.

Did this silly patch reset keyboard settings? I logged in this morning to change skills with no problems, get home after work, try logging in and my keyboard does not work. I had to reset to Windows default and reboot to get it to work.

Do we still have to manually patch or not? If not, please remove the instructions for how to manually patch. I can't tell from what's been written if I still need to manually patch, or did the reboot fix things so no manual patch is needed.

No, dear. This is what happens when you let the developers do quality assurance on their own code. Outsourcing would be an improvement at this juncture.

Wrangler. When I read this message I get absolutely no idea of what is going on other than that something is/was wrong. I have noticed no changes in my client after the patch (except some malfunction with my skill training, which is partitioned), since it just downloaded and installed as usual.
I am, however, now sitting back with a feeling that there was (or perhaps even still is) something wrong with my client, yet I have no idea what it was?
For instance - In the original message above there is a description for how to manually patch. The message does not explain whether or why I would have to do that though. It just tells me how.

Harper: I'm not 100% certain what happened yesterday, but I gathered this info (from forums + my experiences with my client):
- CCP's goal was to integrate the patcher software to EVE client. It should have worked like following (start EVE client, log in, client notices patches, it starts to download them, informs that patch is loaded, you'll just restart client) (previously we had separate patching software).
- the manual patching was added to instructions from CCP devs, so people could still patch clients "manually" instead of this auto-patcher.
- the auto-patcher did not work with win 2000, nor with setups that had EVE client in non-default installation.
- after that something else happened too; I think following was for example reported: some auto-patchers went into infinite loops, auto-patcher could not patch more than one client in same computer.
- even more mess started since no patch notes nor announcement before hand was given.
- patch actually tried to patch something else than the auto-patcher to EVE Client; apparently some keyboard gets stuck in login-screen was on bug list. (still: no patch notes)
My own experience was last night that old client still works, and is no way faulty nor messed-up, and best of all: tries not to do anything auto-patching patching. (I think this was the backwards change that required server boot.)

Guess I was one of the lucky ones, except I did have to stop what I was doing for the short reboot - however, dinner was early, so all is/was good.
Not everyone had problems - or maybe I am crazy in keeping to near defaults - and that is why all went well.
Have an EvE-y day!

Edited by: Vahligmarr on 19/01/2008 00:42:21 have you considered this (below), at least to change skills? you won't have keyborad issues with ubuntu i guess.
Originally by: Vahligmarr for all that have important things to do tonite in the eve-universe and can't login i would suggest downloading ubuntu gutsy.
DL + install will take 1 to 2 hours. install eve after that and you can at least change skill, or finish your mission etc.
but be aware that Ubuntus bootloader (grub) will remove your windows one, which is no problem at all, you can boot windows normally through it, it is only important to know if you plan to remove ubuntu afterwards. its not a big thing, but you should read how to bring back the windows bootloader before uninstalling ubuntu....
good thing is, you have a peek in a really good OS which is absolutely free....

I just have to add to this thread...
'Stealth' patching - aka Auto-patching is a truly apalling idea!
Please, please don't do it now, or ever.
Firstly - if we don't know we're being patched, we cannot take any of the normal precautions, like backups, etc.
Secondly - this is no use at all for Multiple installs, which have been essential for some time. Manual patching is the only way. Please don't screw up our gaming experience for no good reason at all.

It was a proof that CCP fails at what they claim they do best .
It's like it isnt enough with the stupid UI bugs in the unstable client. So many changes in 1 patch was extremely stupid.
Only time CCP will start worrying about service quality is when they lose a big number of players in short time. Only then they will start treating players like the paying customers they are. I just came back to the game and paid for 2 accounts and I regret it already. ---------- My words represent my opinions and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of my corporation or alliance. |
