Ok before you tell me to go but that really nice laptop you have. Please consider the following.
I am not rich, in-fact I am poor! (In-game and In-RL) reduced cost and 2nd hand is ok. I am not looking for Uber, I am just looking for the (very) basic. I want log in and update my training or check my market orders. IÆm not looking for a laptop that I can do fleet ops or pvp. LOW Rez /safemode is fine.
With that said, I prefer Toshiba, or fujitsu. 2 years old is a-ok.
Anyone have any recommendations? Hoping to find it on E-bay second hand. My old IBM Thinkpad T-20 just wont cut it.
Thanks in advance for any advice you provide

Edited by: Soulita on 28/01/2008 04:47:43 Was going to recommend you a samsung r70 hooked up to a big screen lcd... but you say you want a low cost solution.
For low cost I would not look at a laptop.
Best price/value solution would probably be to buy a case, a 350-400W power supply, an AMD XP chip (Socket A), an asus A7N8X (deluxe version is nice), and an AGP geforce 7600GT (512MB is cool, but 256MB should work as well).
All of this will be available on e-bay. The price for the whole system should be around 150-200 bux (excluding monitor). The 7600GT handels the shader model of the premium client I think, so you might even be able to use that.

Any.
My build is about 18mo-2yr dated and it runs up to four instances of EVE without a hitch. So buy what you can afford.

Most 2 year old models with dedicated gfx card and 512 meg of Ram should be able to drag you into station enviroment so you can switch skills and look at market. Altho it's good to make sure gfx chipset it uses actually supports direct x 9.0c.
If possible then 1 gig of ram and separate gfx card with dedicated memory would be optimal. While even minimum configuration can in theory allow you even to undock and do afk hauling or whatever it has usually relatively long loading delays. Avoid integrated gfx chipsets if possible, as some of them have problems when trying to render EVE fonts. You can get into game with them, but chat channels are totally unreadable, as is most of market data.
High display resolution is also bonus to look for, as you can squeeze more information into bigger resolution screens (ie, if you would be able to pick between 1600x1000 and 1200x800 resolutions then first one would be better pick for EVE).

Of course none of these would actually support SM3 as directx9c support does NOT mean your card supports SM3. And for new trinity graphics, that is what you need.

I have an old Toshiba Satellite (1GB Ram with a built in FX5500) and it runs EvE fine. I use it in the evenings to update skill trainings and even to mine while watching something on the telly. I occasionally run missions on it if I have 30 minutes to kill and don't want to go upstairs to the computer room.
I get no lag/graphical slowdowns on it and it's wireless. /win

2 years old laptop will not support SM3 and DX9c.
You need a laptop with ATI 9700 and 128MB dendicated ram, and a P4 3ghz.
Look for Acer ones (they made some fantastic ones with the spec above back in 2004) and they will be dirty cheap.

I have a ASUS laptop its about 2 years old and ive played eve on it since I got it, I cant remeber the make its like ASUS A2k ? i think, I had extra ram added to make it 1gig, other than that runs eve just fine, has the mobility 9700 and I use radeon drivers.
Thankfully im building a new gaming rig next weekend , quad core geforce 8800gt , 4gigs ram etc gonna be nice.

If you only intend to play little things on it, and use a desktop for playing properly then most recent laptops will do. This one for example, is utterly crap for running eve but it runs it.
Just don't try playing properly. Eve kills laptops. I know, it has killed 2 of mine already.

I play on 2 laptops.
An IBM T43 with 1.5GB RAM, rest stock. EvE runs fine. My gaming laptop with a GF 7950 GTX which handles the premium graphics.
As already said, buy what you can afford. EvE classic runs on pretty much everything not 10 years old ^.^
Or, wait til they finally port EvE to a smartphone and get yourself a smartphone to change your skills

I recently bought myself a laptop for the very same reasons you are mentioning :)
Lenovo 3000 N200
It comes in extremely many shapes and sizes, but my version is equipped with a celeron 530 processor, 1.5GB memory and 120GB HD. Intel graphics card. Price was around 300$, doesnt get cheaper than that, AND it can handle
-skillswapping -Marketchecking -trading -Flying between destinations
Haven't tried combat yet, but I'm pretty sure it wouldnt be a pretty sight :P Oh and if you dont want to have a go with it because it's not FSC or Toshiba, please, reconsider. This machine is quality straight through even if it's cheap.
Anyway, if you still want to go FSC, they do have a machine with similar specs as the Lenovo. Just bear in mind that even if the FSC has more memory, Hardware.no just did a test to see which of these cheap machines were better, and the Lenovo raped the FSC trough every test they could throw at them... :)

Edited by: Andrue on 28/01/2008 13:25:45 Most recent laptops (18 months old or less) should be able to log on so you can change skills and play the market. Mine (Acer Aspire 4310) also lets me fly around in space at 30fps but since the Trinity patch it can't render ships in stations properly (I often only get polygons) and sometimes crashes when I dock. I've found that it's safest to minimise Eve while docking as that seems to be a workaround. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

I'd take exception to this ... I've got the Dell M1730 and it's BUILT for gaming. Run's 2 eve clients in premium graphics without breaking a sweat (duel graphics cards in SLI).
That being said it won't fit the price budget of the OP ... but it is a Dell machine that can be a gaming machine.
I've played successfully on a HP/Compaq nc8230, although not with premium graphics (which it doesn't sound like you need) ... as well as a 4 year old Dell Insperion (sorry don't remember the model number) ... if you only want to change skills and do "station" stuff ... then as has been stated above pretty much any machine in the last 3 years with 1G of ram and running XP should do the job.
Good luck finding a machine :) - Dunedon

Runs 2 clients just fine. Shouldn't be too expensive too. I use it for about a year for lots of things including EVE.

I'm also shopping for a laptop that plays EVE (not a desktop, I need the laptop for work). I found a reasonably-priced Lenovo that has a nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, I just wish someone would tell me if it would play EVE Premium.
I know it's not a gaming card, but I'm not looking for fleet battles either . . . I just want to see the shiny new ships. And I don't know squat about Direct X9 and SM3.
