That makes sense. I suppose you already know then that's why castle towers have stairs that wind clockwise? So the defenders can use their sword hands while the attackers' sword hands are against the wall.

I live in America, so I would like to see places that ARE NOT like America at all. Theme parks and casinos are out. I'm also going with the wife and kids so red districts are out too.

Dude, take my advice skip europe altogether and hit the orient. Korea, Thailand, Singapore. Austrailia is nice too. Doesnt matter, east or west Perth/Freemantle, melbourne, sydney...all good! _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. Originally by: Akita T I only drove "automatic" once. Felt really weird, and not in a good way. Don't feel like trying again.
Shifting (properly) is like, half the fun of driving. A third is overtaking/tailing. The final sixth is cutting corners or just speeding.
Agreed. I started driving manuals ~2 years ago, and I won't go back. Whenever I happen to be in an automatic, my left leg gets a twitch, like it wants to help out, but there's nothing for it to do.
Automatics are the norm in America, and there are a depressing number of cars that you can't even get with a stick. Mazda is about the only manufacturer here that puts a stick in everything anymore (including their minivan, although this would be its only redeeming feature).
Quote: You have to either push the stick downwards (older models, single rod) or "squish" the handle and the handle-rest (rod into cylinder kind of thing, or dual rods, on modern models) before you can "engage reverse".
I test drove a BMW 3-series (325i, IIRC) a few months ago. As I recall, the way to engage reverse was "pull very hard", which is one of the few things I didn't like about the car.

Well if you want castles in Europe why not go to the best one?
Warwick Castle is the best preserved example of a proper castle, if you visit in the summer they put on allsorts of demonstrations from archery and swordsmanship to a trebuchet and jousting.
Being in Warwickshire puts you in the heart of the Shires and within easy reach of most of the interesing parts of Great Britain.
Im starting to sound like a travel agent so ill stop here.

Go to Scotland. Amazing scenery and different culture.
As for castles, Edinburgh castle on the mainland is great, but I would suggest you go to Isle Of Arran and visit Bro**** Castle.

in the UK people only usually tip if they fancy the waitress It's far from customary and in no way whatsoever expected.
You pay for what you get and likewise they are paid well for what they do. A "thank you" is about the only thing that's customary.

the UK - london - the Tate Modern, the Wallace Collection, the Tower. cambridge, kings, and jesus. dont walk on the grass. up to edinburgh or york for actual history too. Good pubs, cheaper than england. The lake district or highlands for views - go for a walk in grasmere or derwent, or drive along loch ness up north.
Paris - everywhere. including the red light areas. Pigalle is fantastic, without being too red for kids. the Louvre can take a week for everything - dont go just to see the Venus De Milo or the Mona Lisa - infact, go to the MusTe d'Orsay instead for culture. then head into the dordogne or languedoc.
italy - milan for the style, (dont drive there. it's insane) florence and venice for history. Remember, all italians are genetically engineered to think they're Alberto Ascari the moment they sit behind a wheel, and rent a tank... even a fiat 500 will break mach numbers in the hands of an italian.
norway - stave churches and some stunning landscapes. from there, head into the baltic, through Denmark, up to Sweden, then over through finland, estonia, latvia, and into poland. Riga in summer. wow.
Spain - the Alhambra, Barcelona - gaudi museum.
Monaco, just to say you've been there.
prague, god so much stuff. I still intend to take my other half there someday.
the alps - go walking in the alps - you'll always find beerhouses at the top of lethal walks.

@#!^%**@@!!!!!
Have you only been in Warsaw? :P Other places are nice. Recommendations:
Village Grunwald - a place where one of the greatest battles in medieval europe took place in 1410. You can see the armory, walk the fields of battle... feels strange to walk there where so many peoples had lost their lifes.
Malbork - Knights of the Cross capital fortess - one of the biggest and impressive structures build in medieval Europe.
Tatra mountains - its great to climb up (good summits to climb up - Three Crowns and Rysy, Gerlach on the Czech's side. Try also Sea's Eye (morskie oko) and see that THERE IS NO DIRT in the view :P One has to go there :)
Imho these are the best places to go in Poland, there are a lot more but it would take a few pages to describe them all :) ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥-☻VENA☺-♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ |

Edited by: RoSsCs on 31/01/2008 16:16:26 You've gotta come to England for sure, London is great.
Other parts of the UK are good too, Remeber Great Britian is composed of 3 countries England, Scotland and Wales, and you don't need to show your passport at the England/Scotland or England/Wales border.
Don't mean to sound patronising, but I have spoken with Americans that think the borders in Britain are controlled.
London - Tower of London, London Eye, Westiminster Abbey, see the Houses of parliament builing, lots of Museums, Natural History, Science, Tate Modern and much more.
Edit - Scotland Border Sign

Call that a castle? Now thats a castle!
For baroque niceness try Eger in Hungary.
For fantasy castles go to Bavaria and check out the Neuschwanstein castle and the village of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Both of which featured in the film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". Bring your kids and tell 'em the Child Catchers gonna get them! )

La Grande Galerie de l'Evolution in Paris. It has to be seen to be believed. Someone's photo.
Les Invalides is also worth a look, even if you can only spare an hour. Buy your ticket, and if I remember correctly, the first corridor on your left takes you past a hundred foot long glass cabinet showing the centuries of evolution of the rifle, one change at a time from early muskets to the present day. That one display is worth the admission.
If in the UK, Conwy Castle and Caernarfon Castle if you like that sort of thing. Real castles, not those European wedding cake decorations. Bring raincoats for everyone.
