You could visit Vadstena in Sweden if you want some history. You can visit Vadstena Castle and Alvastra Abbey. A short trip by car and you get to Omberg which is a very nice place to walk around during the summer with a beautiful beech forest.
Lots of hiking trails and a very good view of the surounding areas when you are on top of the... (I think I call Omberg a very large hill (250 or 350 meters in height, I dont remeber))... hill if the weather is clear.
I would recommend you stay out of the surounding towns of +desh÷g, HSstholmen, Boxholm and Mj÷lby since they are the arm-pits of the area.
Vadstena and Motala during the summer can be real nice. A refreashing swim in the nearby lake of VSttern maybe can pick your intreast (if you like to swim in 7 degrees C "warm" water)
There is a canal going right through Motala which is quite buissie/bussy/balls>< with boats during the summer. Had you visited Motala Canal a decade ago you could have visited the cafT my moms best friend and her husband owned back then.
As you can see in the links, Vadstena and Motala are not very populus so don't expect anything in the way of night-life. You have to go to Stockholm, Gotheburg or Malm÷ for that.
