Well, regardless of when the daily DT happens, it's going to be somebody's prime time. *** "Some would call me a Demon. Others, a Vampire. But if the truth be told, I'm a child of the moon and a Goddess among men." Free pint of blood for the Dev who agrees |

It's only prime time for the minority. It's early morning for US, noon for western europe, and complex farming time for eastern europe. That only leaves the australians in the lurch.

Look on the bright side. It's perfectly timed for me.
There now... I bet you feel better, right?

Seriously, though: DT it timed to suit the server admins who are based in London. As others have said, no matter when it is, it's in *someone's* prime time, so CCP may as well suit themselves. It's not going to change,
But you know... it's only 30-60 minutes. Stop, take a break, get a drink and rest your eyes from staring at a PC monitor for a little while. Then log back in and nail those faction spawns.

I'm ok for when downtime hits .... I have my shrink booked up for that hour everyday, I ring him as soon as the server goes down and he talks me down until the server is back up.
When patch day hits I have my shrink come over and stay with me for 24 - 48 hours.

I am an Australian and, yes, it is very annoying having three hours each day (9pm till 11pm) in which I can log into pod... only to have the middle hour removed each and every day due to downtime.
Perhaps a rolling-roster to spread the pain...
But, it'll never happen, of course.
I cope. And it probably helps prevent me from getting TOO addicted...

I really don't mind it.
It's 12.00 - 13.00 here in Denmark.
So I'm at work Monday to Friday and in the weekends its a break to get a shower + dinner
But its a bit unsettling that the server has to be restarted once a day. (do we have a memory leak problem :P)

Sorta. It is faster to not actually delete all the stuff that gets removed at the time, so we get less lag but a 1 hour downtime. ---- Anything less is wasted effort |

yes i agree,
i work overnights so eve is down for an hour when i get off so i think they should move it for my own personal needs
its not just random time its for the server technicians in london to work on it durning thier work day, and allows plenty of time to fix any issues.
why dont you just wake up in the middle of your "night" and play then, thats what you are asking people to do for you

This question comes up every so often. The reason downtime is when it is, is not to hinder one particular timezones play, but rather it's within the core hours here at CCP. So that if something goes wrong, or we need to roll out a new patch, you're sure to have people available.

Out of idle curiosity, is it technically possible to remove the need for DT by increasing the power/quantity of hardware? If so I presume it's outside the budget but hypothetically speaking would it be possible?

To spice it up a little, they should introduce a series of "unscheduled downtimes" whereby you get a free one without any warning. Or maybe some mini downtimes localised to just a certain system, or maybe just have a whole node go through a DT cycle without warning or something...
Then you can hit everybody's prime time without prejudice. That should make things fair and end the whinage. -- Death of an insidious dictator Birth of a new one

It makes sense that teh DT is during the CCP working day. Should there be a problem it's much easier to locate resources during working hours rather than 2am in the morning!
And on a selfish level - I'm at work during the day - so I am never effected by it

If DT is 11-12 or so 'your time', isn't that when you have lunch? Wouldn't it be better an hour later so you can be fed before trying to figure out why things aren't back up yet?
An hour later would put DT in the PT of Bass Strait (the water between Australia and New Zealand). There are less players in that TZ than the east coast of Oz. Yes, I am an Aussie and DT is in my PT and it's the only thing 'wrong' with EVE. Just one hour + or - would be fine btw - this really is right in the middle of PT. The middle.
Perhaps the servers could be fixed to not require some much offline time. World of Warcraft has a few more users than EVE and it's up 24/7 with a DT on tuesdays... sometimes...
thanks, kristaki

I think they tried it once before. But the problem is that the database starts to get screwed up. They need to downtime in order to clean it up and make sure it doesn't explode basically.

And sov/outposts get updated during DT, otherwise you'd have stations suddenly springing up when you weren't expecting it and bumping you to next week :D

Thanks very much for demonstrating what type of person you are. If you had the problem, I'm sure most of us Aussies would think "Jeez, bit of a shame buddy. Wish i could do something to help." Your attitude is simply nasty, as instead of simply being happy that you're not one of those affected, you also have to throw in the little snipe at the peeps who are affected.
Sincerely glad to not know you in RL, Gangus Matari BackBone [MBB]
