just out of interest without any deeper meaning:
Do you hide that you are playing EVE?
Simple question one would assume, or?
Let me specify my question, as I am not talking about actively hiding it, more about being silent about it. EVE is a hobby, on all accounts, for some people a serious hobby, for some not. For some people it is a job :). So do you talk about this hobby, like you would about other hobby's with your friends, class mates, colleagues, girlfriend or wife...
....or do you never mention that you waste your free recreational time with childish stupid in-mature computer games
I am asking because it seems to me that a lot of people are at some point ashamed being a gamer, especially when they are not longer in their twenties? I have been there, I do not longer care, there are worse or real stupid hobby's, but how about you? Touch my **** and I will **** your **** with an rusty **** and **** into your ****, and then I will **** your **** until you ******************** |

Nah, I'm pretty much an open book. My coworkers all talk about the games they're playing and I talk about Eve, Rift, SWTOR, Skyrim, whatever it is I'm playing lately. We usually share PVP video links with each other too.

Not really. But I find that other people aren't as excited about it as I am and I get the feeling they regret having asked me about it when I start trying to explain it to them. I can see their eyes glaze over. So now I say "oh it's just a multiplayer game". |

Hobby???? Its a frigging job, I have to do all the dirty things for my stupid Mistress, ....Mining, Scouting, Transporting, Looting, Salvaging, Probing.
I don't even have implants because I have to jump first in nullsec....in a shuttle before she decides she can follow in her fancy ships. I don't get the newest skillbooks, all the ISK I earn ends in her wallet, and the fanciest ship I ever had was a Drake which she sold when she needed ISK for her legion....I hate my life...I hate EVE. |

Yeah I'm pretty open about it.
My boss is the only one talks smack about it, he's an oversized child with this huge butthead looking head. He claims all I do is play Eve all day at work. Come on these PC have enough trouble running solitary. He's always asking, "did you get that mothership yet, how is your space base". Or telling people Ryan plays spaceships on the computer all day. I just ask him how it's different than the fantacy sports he does all day, at least I'm not fantasizing about men in tights. -á"Nerf it cause I can't fly it". The funny thing about Eve-O is that its basically only active in the EU TZ. I'm otherwise occupied in the EU TZ and thus it doesn't really affect my play time.

Let me answer that with another question: Should I?
Really, should I hide the fact that I play EVE? I don't have any reason to do so, as far as I can see. |

Or. God forbid. A Twilight fan.

A post rife with the terms of cultural enslavement. I mean, we have a gaming population that brims with arrogance borne of an impression all are independently thinking, and blatantly free-will weilding paragons of individuality....hiding the fact they play EVE...
Hide from whom? The first obvious question - what sort of person has others around them from whom they must hide things? Very strange.
Game "addiction" - something about which I've written extensively (interviewing people in the field of addictive behavior), the professionals in that field reply, "You're kidding, right?"
"Your free, recreational time..." That one got me. It's like someone speaking from inside a zoo cage. So....your time is so preoccupied with the demands of your culture, you're only allowed so much time as "free"? You get to recreate? What is it you're recreating when you do this? Yourself? Even stranger.
The "stupid [im]mature" part speaks for itself. Are you addressing stupid, immature people with your adult questions? Makes one wonder what sort of answer you expect. "Der...yeah. I hide playing EVE with my beat-off magazines."
But...you've been there. You've actually been ashamed to play games past 20 years old? Then...you got over it by becoming insensitive...? (I won't try to parse that pretzel logic.)
Einstein himself said one of the qualities of intelligent people is their understanding of the need to play games.
-8/10 for just plain idiocy on the hoof. (+2 for the effort to cloak the post in a semblence of objective insight.)

you did take that one sentence serious did you? Should have marked it more clearly as cynism
but for clarification, yes I was silent about EVE as a hobby, because you get weird looks, because people put you in the nerd category, because computergaming is still not accepted as a serious hobby for adults, if anybody of you over 30 never got a weird look when he said he plays computergames you can throw the first stone :)

I don't hide that I play, but when I interview people I ask them if they are gamers and what they do play. Nobody will be the first to admit to playing Eve, but if you mention it they will admit it.
Funny though, if they mention anything it is WoW and half the time they paint a very sad picture of their life in the process. Buff Hybrid Guns!!!! |

EVE isn't really a game, exactly.
I think it's a project jointly funded by governments across the world to safely channel the destructive behaviors of people suffering from various anti-social personality disorders.
So yes, I'd rather not tell people I play this "game" for fun. :-)
Seriously though, I never mention this or any of the games I play to my non-gamer friends. They don't ask. I don't tell. |

Yeah, but....I think you miss Serene's point, and you further do what she's pointed-out. Who cares if people give you weird looks? They're weird people. What other looks do you expect? OR, do you seek their approval?
"...people put you in the nerd catagory...." WHO CARES about people who catagorize people? They're fools! Or, do you seek THEIR approval TOO?
I'm six-foot five, I weigh an athletic 225 pounds. Anyone gives ME a weird look...well, let's just say they don't dare. But, again, you seem to think this society and their reaction to you should govern your decisions about life, and that's just a **** poor shame.
"...not accepted as a serious hobby for adults..." I just goes ON and ON...so she's right - cultural enslavement.
I don't have to cast a stone at you. You're doing alright on your own.
