Do you know this situation?
You are in some system of low security, solo-mining or hunting and watching the belt for NPC ships. Suddenly someone warps in, locks you, webs and scrambles you and starts pummeling on your shields and armour - then the channel opens: "Your money or your pod, 40 million."
Say, you are in a mining battleship, your head full of implants and a decent amount of valuable ore in your cargo. What do you do?
I strongly recommend NOT to pay. For a very simple reason. The money you give that pirate will buy him half a battleship or several cruisers and allow him to visit you sooner or later again. Do not let him make money that easily. "If" you want piracy of this kind to stop, simply stop throwing isk into pirates wallets.
What will happen then? The pirate will destroy your ship, your pod. You lose your implants, the ore and the shiny ship. You go and buy a new ship from insurance and add some isk for the ship, equipment and implants. That money is lost for you but will not go into the pirate's wallet (unless you buy the new ship from him or his alt or buddy of course) where it does not belong at all.
And the next time you solo-mine in a belt you do not do it in a battleship but in a cruiser, losing that ship will be no biggy in comparision to a lost battleship. And use standard equipment, instead of fancy stuff. You will mine less ore, of course, but the loss in mining ore will be less than a 2 or 3 times loss of 40 million in a month. Question of maths.
As far as I am concerned, my ships are insured and I do not care about implantss. I will not pay. Think about it. ____________________________________________________

I agree completely, Randuin...although for me it's more than just a question of maths, it's a question of pride. If a pirate is going to profit off of me, it's going to be from whatever scrap he picks off the remains of my vessel; NOT from money I shoved into his wallet, pathetically grovelling for my life.
Of course, I don't fly around with tens of millions worth of implants in my head, so maybe my perspective is a bit skewed.

It's up to you if you don't want to pay, but you lose a lot more money and time that way. You will drop guns and modules anyways, so there is always a few millions of profit for the pirate.
Some other ppl who have done "the math", too, want to pay, but your attitude makes it impossible for them, because pirates won't even bother asking.
Btw. if you really want to hurt a pirate's wallet, why not shoot back? ;)

Interesting point - if their maths come to another conclusion I would be interested in that calculation.

If possible, of course but a lost blackbird will not hurt that much as long as the next blackbird will bring in another 30+ million.
Anyways, of course it is up to each pilots decision, how to react - let us read more opinions on this issue. ____________________________________________________

A better option is to hit your shield boosters and hardeners, hull repairer if you have it, and log.
I have found that most of the time, you can survive. Your ship has to last 30 seconds; i had 3 scorpions attack me at a gate recently and logged while cloaked. I came back a few hours later in deep space, with 1/3 of my armor intact. It's very hard to kill a tier 2 bs in 30 seconds.

Yes the rule is try to fight back, if you cant or it looks like its going badly, take the heroes way out, self destruct your ship. That way they will get nothing and soon give up hastling you. Also in most cases you will get away in your pod, just be ready with the warp to selection on a planet or a moon. Well said randuin

rules for mining in low sec: 1. always watch local and know the pirates that roam that area 2. NEVER mine at the warp in point of a belt..warp in from a moon or somethin(less likely to have someone warp in on you in range to scramble you) 3. your BS is harder to replace than your ore, so wtf are you doing sitting there looking confused .. RUN
any questions?

Lame. You say 30 seconds? Well then it was an exploit (before patch). I love it when GMs take ppl's ships away because of that :)
Hope you know that it doesn't work anymore, if you are scrambled you can log off if you want, you won't move or disappear.
And it's not very difficult to destroy a battleship within 30 sec with the right fitting.

Well, if the target ship has a (XL) shield booster and is a scorp with my skills, you'd need to deal like ~570 damage per second. That's pretty hard since you are not very likely to be in blaster range from the beginnning.
Edit: BTW, corp description "We believe in honor, honesty and integrity". The guy should get kicked out for telling people to log out from fights.

What kind of piracy would that be?
Piracy where we give u an option, or would you prefer us to just blow u up no questions asked?

so how do a pirate really pod kill you? like when your ship blow up, you double click on some random moon/planet warp there, make a bookmark mid warp, come out of warp at the planet, warp to safe spod. whats so hard about it?
the only way you really can pod someone with half a brain is using torpdos to splash him to death. but any smart pirate woudlent do that because they risk killing the loot, leaving them with nothing at all kind of idiotic if your trying to make money |

This happened 2 days ago. Skillz was in an elite frig, and there were 3 other bs there. Naturally I don't know precisely what happened after I logged, but I did have another char in system (2 accounts) in a stabber. It was apparent the pirates did now know I had logged, as they were demanding 40 mil even after char was gone.
30 seconds may not be quite correct, its either 30 or 60. And afaik, you do in fact poof after the time limit is up whether you are scrambled or not.

Most honorable, real pirates, will not blow you up after you have payed there said toll. We in SNeaky magic will not blow up anyone who pays the said toll, as we dont benefit much from blowing up your bs, we would just rather get the isk and let you go. For some reason people still thinking logging will save them and if you cant afford 15mill then you really shouldnt be flying a bs. ================================================

Ok let's be realistic for a second. If the toll is not crazy and inculdes basically a leave me alone for the day clause you would be stupid not to agree. Now 40 mil is too much unless you mine with rare mods in which case I can't help you anyway. 20 mil on the other hand to save a ship, implants if you have them and most importantly to be able to keep mining uninterupted and not have to waste time getting another ship. Well that sounds reasonable.
Oh yeah it isn't the hero's way to die by self destruct. I hate that you can even do that. Hero's fight back with what ever weapons you have.
If people don't pay the tolls they will just pwn you 155 km from the gate and pick up your crap.

ummm forgot to summarize the point i was trying to make. for a miner, paying is normal and smart most of the time. for a pirate its also smart cuz pirates are after money. for a fighter its...not...because honor > money in that case.

i think ppl who gets killed by pirates in 0.0 are just lame when they whine about it. When u are in 0.0 u are in NON SECURE space. U shall know that it is a possibility that a pirate comes to try and kill u when u mine. It nothing to whine about when a pirate says like "20 mill or ur corpse" its just to pay up if u want to live.

4-5 warp stabs, face a warpable object, and the second a pirate enters the system, warp and log. Don't wait around for him to say hi.
Barring that, warp to an object and call in reinforcements. Either way, forget about fighting. You CAN'T fight a dedicated PvP set up when you are set up for mining. Not effectively anyway. Thats what these pirates count on. So either log, call in back up, or at the very least hit a station and refit for battle. If you know what you are doing and it's one on one, you might stand a chance if you get a combat rig and then return.
If you stop paying attention for a bit and get a face to face with him, the warp stabs should keep him from locking you down. Two finger salute while running like hell.
I've never been in 0.0 myself, but there are multiple posts about this stuff. They all say pretty much what I've written above. If you are only worried about NPC rats you can get away with as few as 2 warp stabs in most cases.
Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake. -Napoleon Bonaparte |

What kind of piracy would that be?
Piracy where we give u an option, or would you prefer us to just blow u up no questions asked?
Or piracy in general, EVE should become carebare land where we all hold hands in an astroid belt and mine veldspar, or travel through 50 jumps of 0.0 AFK happy in the knowlage that no one will kill us!
I think this is a crucial point. It will lead to more killing.
In fact, the pirate is there to kill you. By giving you a chance, she's being very generous. Your choice to take it or not. I know I'll enjoy my work either way. You decide if you want to keep your ship and implants.

Yes, we pirates have a hard time making the people we ransom actually pay. This is what the whining should be about, but like most of u, i dont like whining. I have experienced that if the pirates (at least works for me) lower the price a bit, they will get people to pay. When i ransom i usually do it like this:
any cruiser: 2 mill lvl1 bs: 10 mill lvl2 bs: 20 mill
Now, those prices are pretty reasonable if u ask me. My experience says that most people actually pay, and that is what i want! money being transfered... If u however log off, u will see ur shiny little egg, when u log back on again.
Happy mining. -------------------------------------------------------------- Making a new char picture will not work on the forums. The payment, however, does. |

Quote: i think ppl who gets killed by pirates in 0.0 are just lame when they whine about it. ... JUST LIVE WITH IT DAMMIT
No lame whining at all, read my initial post .
However, 'tis not necessary to "live with it" - Question is still: 'To pay or not to pay' - and maybe find solutions how to evade paying if not willing to pay to make a pirate rich.
So far most of the posts gave some ideas - thanks a lot. ____________________________________________________

Honestly, I do not care about how you earn your isk. I only care how I spend mine. And I am glad to see that the word "carebear" is still used as an offense ____________________________________________________

I don't see the problem. If ppl want to pay, why not?
Pay : Lose honor+money (possibly +ship+cargo+equipment+pod+implants, depends on pirate, should be rare)
Not pay : Lose ship+cargo+equipment+pod+implants (generally more expensive, if not the fee is too high and the pirate should reconsider the amount if he/she wants ppl to pay)
If you don't care about the honor and principles, I don't see the point in not paying, as you will lose less money that way.
Would I pay? Probably not. It's a lot more likely that I'd attack with whatever weapons I have, and if all else fail I'd probably start ramming the pirate (although I know it won't do any good).

Some other ppl who have done "the math", too, want to pay, but your attitude makes it impossible for them, because pirates won't even bother asking.
Btw. if you really want to hurt a pirate's wallet, why not shoot back? ;)
so true - if i start to ask money, guess what i get?

*sigh*
its shoot first ask later - because its just stupid to pay anyway - inshurance will cover theyr loses - only if the BS is uninshured - and the worst case scanaio is that the vicktim log off - ofcorse if hes scrambled the ship will not warp away, but here u can se an examples for the attitude towards pirating
we realy got no choise exept killing em at the tracks
Let me see if I understand this. YOU are making fun of someone elses English?
