I just offered to help a guy named Saber Stuner on a lvl4 mission. Formed a fleet with him and warped to him. One minute later i find myself a ransom, a ship and a pod poorer, as his friends waiting there kick my butt. How come this kind of tactic, based upon other peoples good will even exist?! Lesson: Don't ever help people.

When you formed a fleet with him, there was a warning popup that said that by accepting him into the fleet, anyone he is at war with can fire on you. That popup would also list the corporations he may be at war with. You should have checked the local chat for anyone in the listed corporations to make sure.

Heh, I had this happen to me fairly recently. It's a pretty clever scam, in that it preys on the goodwill of others to kill them.
EvE is a dark, harsh, cruel place where you have to be powerful and wealthy if you want to be "nice" without risking everything you own. Sorry, but that's the way it is.
The fact is, you should never help anyone you don't implicitly trust with your ship and your pod. Never join a fleet with anyone not in your corp...some people will tell you ways to make it "safe", but fleets are not safe.
Period.
So, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and go refit a new ship, and maybe hire some mercs on the guys if you need retribution. It's not the end of the world, although it feels like it now. --------

That's not always the case.
You don't get the "Dodgy" warning, listing all wars, if the original inviter is clean as a whistle (and un-ganged, at time of invite).
You'll notice Saber Stuner is not on the killmail... the one the OP initially joined up to aid.
Saber was most likely solo (at that time), invited the OP (who received no warning)... then when OP is mid-warp to Saber, invites all the crowd of uglies. You don't get "dodgy" warnings if you're already in the gang, when new members join.
Not sayin' it doesn't suck when it happens... just sayin' it is completely possible to join an ambush gang unawares, and with no warning.

The sadness I see in this is that pirates ask for a ransom to spare your life...then kill you anyway...
Doesn't seem very pirate-ish to me >.>

Pirates that actually deserve that name don't have to stoop to these 'tactics' to make their epeen explode. Gang sploiters and suicide gankers, both the same ilk. They're about the lowliest form of life to be found in EVE, ranking even below Goons.
This is why I always have autoreject on when operating in highsec.
And the real funny thing is, the people condoning these actions, which kinda encourage people into misrust and rather staying on their own, then turn around and harp about how this is a multiplayer game and you should be interacting with others when they whine about solo L4 runners in a different thread...
There is no 'n' in turret There is no 'r' in faction There is no 'a' in Scorpion There is no 'e' in Caldari There is no makeup in rogue drones |

The real tragedy is not the ship loss but the fact that they went to all that trouble for a plain t2 fit Abbadon.
Where are the deadspace hardeners? Officer Damage mods? Hell even faction gear would do, somewhere lofty is crying over having his name associated with this poor mans high sec gank

Dear Minyana,
Please post this in Crime & Punishment. I'm sure the morally upstanding citizens of eve will be outraged by this in that section of the forum.

What's with all the scum infesting Gen pop?
Back to C & P with you! Shoo!
Anyway, this sort of mechanic probably exists because Eve's lead(?) developer is the type of person who wants, feels compelled, to throw grenades at noobs, if that ever becomes possible in internet walking, I mean Ambulation. That's what I read in some devblog or some such. In other words, this loophole in gang mechanics exists because the makers of this game want such loopholes to exist. It's been around for so long it cannot be considered an oversight, and thus it's WaD. Even if I think it's ridiculous.

If you do get the urge to 'help' any more 'poor players', accept the invite, click on 'warp to member', wait for the warp to activate, click on 'leave fleet'...
If they're stupid enough to still fire on you, you get to see concord wtfpwn them :)

OFFS!!! Clearly people that get caught by this "tactic" are the ones that only run to the forums when THEY need something (or to whine exibit A: Le OP). This "kill the carebear****s" tactic has been poppin up alot in the last few weeks because dont like to listen and they CLEARLY dont know how to leave gang when being locked.... takes at least 5 seconds to lock a battleship (in another battleship i think, dont quote me it) so thats 5 seconds PLUS those 2 seconds from when the warp bubble is about to collapse......so in total around 7 seconds (1337 math skills yo) to right click and leave the frakkin' fleet.. OR even better when the other dude warps you, leave the fleet that way if it aint a trap just frakkin join up again i mean REALLY, some of the player base of this game is that of two frakkin dead frogs!!!
