This is an old trick.
Either make the gang yourself or don't accept invites from people you don't know.
fyi Lofty was not the inventor of this.

Oddly enough, they don't have to invite someone else into the fleet. I formed a fleet with a guy, and no one else joined it that I saw, and I still got pew-pewed. I also left the fleet as soon as I realized what was happening, but they still killed me with no Concordokken. So, because there are so many ways to exploit the fleet/war mechanics, the only safe way to deal with this is to refuse to join a fleet. --------

Edited by: Thommy on 16/02/2008 16:23:26 If you did not fire an shot on them whatsoever you should have killrights on them if im not mistaken. That is unless wardec fleet tricks wont hand out killrights.
Also i have not read all followup posts but like have been said many times you cant always know 100% sure this trick is going to be pulled on you because of the following situation:
- Char A (lets call him bait mission runner without negative status). - Char A puts out an call for people to help him on mission. - At this point you join in. - In the join fleet is an standard text with no confronting warning about an wardec (although im not sure anymore what the exact standard text is). - Player would think its ok and joins fleet. - From this point Char B and Char C join in who are in war with each other. - Original fleet members are not warned about these joining the fleet nor that they are in war with each other, however duo to wardec & altered fleet mechanics i believe you will get an 15 minute flag at this point (so if your at this point in warp and notice suddenly 1, 2 or even more guys join its probably to late allready, add fleet notification lag and your sure not to know before its to late). - Ship is destroyed, if you stay in that fleet so will your pod.
Personally i would say these 2 things "whats the counter?" and "can i get them back for it?". Counter is obvious dont join with strangers unless you control the fleet yourself or you are really sure you can trust them other then that if you find yourself makeing the mistake of still joining in on it and warping i think atleast once in warp there is little you can do.
For the 2nd one im not sure you can but id make good use of the killrights .
Edit: btw worse is when they just keep spamming you with fleet invites hopeing you accidently join it when your occupied with other tasks when in space.

More of a suspension.....was for callin someone a nerd apperantly thats frowned upon who knew eh? anyway my points was that all ya gotta do is leave the god dam gang while in mid warp, then if it's all gravey and turns out you arent gonna get royally f**ked by a 1337 high sec piwate just reform the gang.
There's been posts just like this one poppin up on the forums alot in the last few weeks, doesnt take much to read em and take the advice of the repliers. That way there's less posts like this and evertually people stop getting caught by this exploit.

There's also a version where they can still do it if you form the gang. I think it involves the bait changing what corp he's in.
IMO this should be considered an exploit unless the warning popup appears. If you say "yes" when it asks you if you want to do something risky it's your own fault, but somebody who doesn't know about this gets no warning. -------------------------------------------------- <3 my Drones |

Edited by: 000Hunter000 on 16/02/2008 18:29:57 Yeah this tactic does suck but u could have taken a few easy steps to avoid it.
Could have checked if the guy was at war, accept him into your fleet (u get the warning message which shows if the guy is at war), don't let him accept u in his. And last but not least, EVE is a cold harsh place, Don't help people u do not know or trust.
Quote: There's also a version where they can still do it if you form the gang. I think it involves the bait changing what corp he's in.
I thought u could not change corp in space? but this should definitly be considered an exploit, and the easiest way to fix it is to make it impossible to switch corps while ur in a gang.

I dissagree that this is heartless of CCP. Its more like an open 'sand box'. And more importantly so is 'R/L'
Much better to get 'taken' here, and lose ISK. Than to get taken in R/L by 'Deposed Nigerian Nobility', or worse. And lose Real Life Money, resources, health, life.
If we could Ban these things in 'R/L', then it could further to make Eve more 'realistic'. _______ All Our Base Are Belong To Them |

Actually, this is what happened to me:
I made the fleet.
The guy had a waiting application to join a shell corp at war with his buddies' corp.
The guy warped us to his buddies
They blew up my ship.
This way, the target never gets a warning, and thinks he's safe because no one else has joined the fleet.
Unlike the regular lofty trick, this one smacks a bit more of "exploit" because it uses corporation mechanics to avoid the warning. However, I'm still pretty sure that it is perfectly legal, so I would advise not petitioning it.
Just don't help strangers.

Pathetic tactic. Sad thing that some people don't take this game seriously and use this kind of trick (emotional leverage), to obtain ingame victory. Preying on others' goodwill has more to do with taking advantage of a gimmick in general gaming social behavior -gamers help each other in mmorpgs,in pve-, than playing well, good fittings, good tactical understanding of the situation etc. This is garbage and should not happen in such a game as Eve that has excellent pvp-oriented gameplay.

TRUST NO ONE AND NEVER FLY ANYTHING YOU CANT AFFORD TO LOSE OR ARE WILLING TO RISK FOR A JUICY REWARD! (And that reward hardly lies in doing a LVL 4 mission for someone else if you can do it alone!)

And let the turds dictate not only how I play, but how I think? Screw that. I'll take precautions, like using a cheap T2 fit Domi or Raven, but I'll keep helping people when i feel like it. And I don't help people for a reward, what kind of talk is that?

This is a stupid old scam.
CCP could fix this by simply disallowing warring parties to be invited to a gang when people who weren't vulnerable to them previously are already in it. It's not hard, but CCP chose to grief their newer players like this and keep this scam in the game.
But hey, they spend a lot of money on advertising to bring in new players to replace those who were disappointed with the dodgy game mechanics and left.
EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...
