Dragonfly Light Freighter
Intrigued by the discussion on mini-freighters (and always looking for an excuse to build yet-another-starship-model), I decided to try my hand at a Gallente light freighter.
The model is not yet textured; I'm currently adding details to the geometry. And several areas are yet to be filled in; those big smooth blank areas will be getting some attention this week.
Dragonfly Freighter (in progress)
Dragonfly Freighter Side Profile (in progress)
Dragonfly Forward Detail View (in progress)
Comments and critiques welcome. Will update the thread as I progress.

I'd stick the side engines closer to the body and distort them so the look more organic and maybe stick the third "mini" engine on the right engine housing just cause.

Originally by: Sopha Serpentia Its too symmetrical and un-eve like.
You're right, way too symmetrical for the artsy Gallente. I'll add in some changes this week. (Modelers are soooo lazy... always wanting to mirror geometry to save time. )
Originally by: Ppffffft It looks like the galaxy transport ship from Planetside
I'd never played Planetside, and just did a search for the Galaxy transport. From the top it does resemble the craft (that's what I get for using the basic 'aeroplane' design), but when the model is completed it should look very different from the Galaxy. Sopha's changes will go a long way in that direction.
Interesting note: The forward 'wings' are actually cargo holds, much like those seen on the Obelisk. But judging from the replies, many seem to think they're large engines. I'll have to find a way to differentiate the two.
Thanks again for the replies everyone. Think you guys could come up with a new name for the ship? I like Atlas. Any more ideas?
All feedback is greatly appreciated.

Very nice looking base model. It would be nice to see it in the game, along with the functionality it offers. I have wondered why there is no mid-sized hauler in this game. It seems a little odd that your options for hauling volumes are either a suitcase or the entire planet.

Pegasus! (it's a horse that flies and horses are pack animals )
Bout friggin time that ccp released something intermediate between the biggest hauler and the freighter impo, something that cost like 100 to 200 mill and can carry roughly 100k base load, and have some slots, for the rest it can be as fragile (and gankable) as any of the other transports/haulers.
Just make it need hauler at L5 and introduce a new skill (racial cargoship skill or whatever) adds 5% more room per level and 5% speed/agility/whatever per level. Have slot layout of 1/2/4 for gallente and mebbe roughly the shield/armor/hull stats of a BC and the sig of a BS.

Experimented with several configurations which were highly unsymmetrical... and ugly to boot. Didn't like a one of them. There is a fine line between 'unsymmetrical' and 'unbalanced'. I finally decided to restrict the non-symmetrical elements to secondary geometry (the Dominix and Vexor are good examples; minor hull items are different from side to side, but overall the outline is fairly balanced).
Rear View - Breaking the Model's Symmetry
As you can see, the rear and undersides of the model are currently devoid of any detail.
Spent more time tonight researching ship names than actually working the model. Researched all the Gallente ship names to get an idea of the pattern (as wandering as it is). Leaning towards one of the following names:
Atlas - a titan. Notus - the south wind in Greek mythology. Iris - messenger of the gods. Argus - multiple sources. Crius - a titan.
Not much of an update, and will hopefully accomplish more tomorrow.
Cheers!

Galaxy
And that Galaxy pic looks similar (to me at least) to the Dreadnaught Corvette. These are all variations on a theme which has been reproduced hundreds of times, and have their root in modern aircraft. One of the reasons I love the Homeworld and Eve ship-types; they do manage to break out of the 'airplane in space' rut.
When I began the model, I was attempting to evoke the features of a dragonfly. If you remove the rear engine module, it comes fairly close. But it felt very unbalanced, and I ended up adding the rear engine module to balance out the front. With that move, I ended up in 'aeroplane-in-space-land'. Sometimes, try as you might, you just can't stay away.

I can see the Galaxy-dropship reference if I interpret the two large modules on either side as engines, but I'm inclined to see them as cargo holds.
Will they have exhaust trails or will they be rounded at the end to confirm my inclination?

Rounded... with lots of detail and thing-a-ma-jiggies. I just haven't progressed that far. I've also considered dropping the maneuvering thrusters (seen in the rear-view pic) just to prevent such confusion.

Nice work.
Why not break it away from the empire styles, and make it the first in a series of InterBus improved industrial/haulers - parallel to the ORE miners - available to everyone. You could keep the symmetry then as you have no prior constraints.

Plutonian, I really like how the ship is coming along and it definitely has a distinct "Gallente" look to it.
With regards to modeling, did you box-model a lower polygon count "rougher" image and then meshsmooth by smoothing groups to get the curved look? If not, what method did you use?
Thanks! -LD

Hercules
Plus it has the added benefit of being a mythological hero / demigod which fits into the naming scheme.
Over-sized engine cowls give this ship the look of something that was made to do some serious work! I for one wouldn't mind seeing a nice symmetrical Gallente ship that doesn't look like a turd or a lopsided booger.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments.
Originally by: Daan Sai Why not break it away from the empire styles, and make it the first in a series of InterBus improved industrial/haulers - parallel to the ORE miners - available to everyone. You could keep the symmetry then as you have no prior constraints.
I'd originally considered making it an ORE ship, simply because from CCP's standpoint, it is far more efficient to introduce one ship into the game than four. And I'd love to see it in-game.
However, the harsh reality is that accepting assets built by fans for use in CCP's professional game can be problematic; I have no access to their graphical pipeline (I'm not even sure what program they use for 3D creation), and so some work would have to be involved just to get the Lightwave model into the correct format for the engine. In addition, developers generally have no legal procedures in place for such a transfer... and if you have to involve the lawyers to build one, then it would have been more efficient to just have your in-house artists build you a ship (that's what they're there for). You avoid the whole Can-O-Worms from the start.
I'd give CCP the finished model for free; I love the thrill of seeing something I've built in-game. In the past I've contributed to several start-up projects and one professional game (Stardock's Gal Civ 2: Dark Avatar). But unless a system already exists where CCP can utilize a player-built asset without suffering any legal risks, I don't think it's going to happen.
So this one is just for fun. And I find the Gallente ship styles interesting, especially since when I began I was doing my 'dragonfly' thing (a style which wouldn't work very well on an ORE ship).
Originally by: Liara Dex With regards to modeling, did you box-model a lower polygon count "rougher" image and then meshsmooth by smoothing groups to get the curved look? If not, what method did you use?
I began by jumbling 4 plain boxes together (one long for the spine, two for the cargo holds, one for the head). From there I began slicing cuts where needed and manually (point by point, poly by poly) moving things around until I got a pleasing rough shape.
I'm using Lightwave 9.3, so after that I simply hit the subpatch key (sounds like your meshsmooth tool) and then start sculpting the shapes, cutting and beveling where needed to get the required surface geometry.
Originally by: Heimdall Aus I'm thinking that a light freighter will be one of those "jack of all trades" type ships that get used for everything... so why not give it a name like a real world transport that fits the same niche:

Plus it has the added benefit of being a mythological god which fits into the naming scheme.
I'm still indecisive on the name; Atlas and Hercules both are nice IMO, but also fairly mainstream when compared to Thanatos, Nemesis, and other Gallente-ship/greek god names. I had thought I'd get the model completed (or nearly so), and then post a poll.
Let the players of Eve decide the name.

As for the name, i suggest Ceres.
Quote from Wikipedia: 'In Roman mythology, Ceres was the goddess of growing plants (particularly cereals) and of motherly love. Her name derives from the Proto-Indo-European root "ker", meaning "to grow", which is also the root for the words "create" and "increase".'

Edited by: Yargo Metash on 21/02/2008 20:32:06 Awesome ship model Plutonium. I've had dreams about carving out ships (namely, a Thrasher) from big white unmodeled virtual clay.
Your ship definetly looks very Gallente, and perhaps taking the maneuvering thrusters off of the cargo bay's and slapping them either on the main engine housing with a bulbous addition (Ala Thorax or Brutix) or simply make them smaller. They're a little big for maneuvering thrusters compared to the model size. The small ones are fine, the big ones are too big. Splitting them up into a two-three thruster cluster would help, possibly... Mabye. My minds eye says "Too many thrusters!" then. Hum.
Either way, nice job and looking forward to the finishing touches stage!

Name wise, I vote for "Barbados", since we don't have any ships named after Caribbean islands yet. ------

Looking better but can we get a picture that shows the entire model instead of the close ups you had in your last update?
There is nothing wrong with being even there are several even ships in gallente land which includes 100% of thier industrial ships.

Hey hey... Name idea.
Gallente mostly use God-names (or derivates) for ships...
The ship designer is called Plutonian.
Wasn't Pluto a roman version of some greek God?
Wiki'ed: Pluto is an alternative name for the Greek god Hades, but was more often used in Roman mythology in their presentation of the god of the underworld. He abducted Proserpina (Gr. Persephone), and her mother Ceres (Gr. Demeter) who then caused winter in her grief. Although he is often envisioned today as evil (for his similarities to the Christian Satan) the Romans did not view him as such.
Pluto was originally not the god of the underworld. Pluto is cognate with the Greek word "Ploutos" (wealth, cf. plutocracy), and, under the original name Plutus, was considered by the Romans as the giver of gold, silver, and other subterranean substances.
Now, the underworld thingy is a bit too dark for a 'mere' freighter. So I submit the name "Plutus", meaning wealth. Fitting, yes?

You gotta keep consistent with Gallente naming scheme which means you have to pick a name out of Greek mythology. Chop chop!
Thorax is not a greek god
THORAX (0e6poú). 1. Of Larissa in Thes-saly, and one of the powerful family of the Aleua-dae. Thorax and his brothers, wishing to confirm or to increase their power, were among those who urged Xerxes to invade Greece, and promised him their assistance in the enterprise. In the Persian king's retreat, after the battle of Salamis, Thorax formed one of his escort, after which he still con¡tinued to show his zeal in the cause of the in¡vaders, and was present with Mardonius at the battle of Plataea, b. c. 479. When the Persians had been finally driven from Greece, Leotychides, king of Sparta, led an army into Thessaly to punish those who had sided with the barbarians, but the Aleuadae purchased his forbearance with bribes. (Herod, vi. 72, vii. 6, ix. 1, 58;) [leotychides, No. 2.] - Looks like they named it after a right git
Back to something on subject - I love the way the ship looks, but I thinks its way to cool to just to be cargo hauler, looks like it would make a nice cruiser or bc.

Originally by: Yargo Metash Your ship definetly looks very Gallente, and perhaps taking the maneuvering thrusters off of the cargo bay's and slapping them either on the main engine housing with a bulbous addition (Ala Thorax or Brutix) or simply make them smaller. They're a little big for maneuvering thrusters compared to the model size. The small ones are fine, the big ones are too big. Splitting them up into a two-three thruster cluster would help, possibly... Mabye. My minds eye says "Too many thrusters!" then. Hum.
Since I'm not working with sketch references, the model is in a constant state of flux. I look at a plain area and say "Hmmm... what would look cool?"
Unfortunately, what looks good today isn't always as pretty tomorrow morning. So, in the updates, you'll see some objects which change position or disappear entirely as the model progresses. The thrusters are one of those. Currently, they're on the back of the engine module, but may not stay. I'm unsure if I'll keep to the 'traditional' round thruster nozzles or switch to a more modern integrated unit (rear thrusters on Vexor are a good example of a more integrated unit).
Originally by: Nova Fox Looking better but can we get a picture that shows the entire model instead of the close ups you had in your last update?
Sure, though there's not much detail in other areas. They're rather plain at the moment. Gallente Light Freighter Update 2-22-2008

I'd considered that, but felt it was a bit prideful to use my own character's name. But since you mentioned it, I'm now free to throw it in the hat with the other names. \o/

Im also just wondering if you seen my thread on destoryers artwork.

I don't expect to have another cargo module between the engine module and the main ship... I want to keep the lines more graceful and tapering in that area. But it does need something. Currently it is too delicate and fragile-looking.
I've followed your destroyer artwork thread with interest. Very nice sketches there, and I'm quite envious. My sketching skills have atrophied horribly since taking up modeling.

What bothers me atm a wee bit is that the rear engine module looks similar to the two cargopods on the side. maybe take a look at the Navitas, it has a very elegant end and might be just the thing for yours? another option would be to cross reference between the Iterons and the Obelisk. Maybe it doesnt need a tail at all?
Another good approach would be to not just design it to be "pretty" but to try to do a technical approach. Like, what is this good for, why place the engine so far from its energy core, where is the energy core best placed, where does it load/unload its goods, how should they be unloaded/loaded, will it be armored or more of a nanofreighter, etc.. i think if you ask yourself all those questions you gonna get a pretty good vision of what to place where and how it should look, even before you model it. For me this helps me alot, otherwise i'd be on it an tingle around with no end in sight. just my 2 cents

If the big one is called the Obelisk, the small one has to be called the Asterisk.
It's only natural.

I've created models in this manner before, and enjoy those 'hard-science' projects far more than the casual ones. It's fun to actually design the spacecraft instead of just focusing upon the visual details. However, it requires a highly technical and well detailed universe to pull it off, or you're stuck making up 'fluff' off the top of your head.
While Eve certainly isn't the softest sci-fi out there, I do not feel it has enough detail to create a 'realistic' model. For instance, I cannot point to any specific bulge on the Domi and say "that's the shield generator grid" or "that's the Mk1 Hans-Bellings Powerplant". Ships here are designed more for looks than according to any strict subset of rules.
Previously, I created models from the Independence War series (by Particle Systems). With such a highly detailed science underlying the models, I can easily build a new ship type since I know what it will require; a specific thrust-to-mass ratio (which determines the rear thruster size and configuration), the required agility determined placement and number of maneuvering thrusters, which determined whether the craft would utilize fixed weapons or turrets, and so on.
But Eve, to my knowledge, lacks those hard technical details.

I must admit, I like the engine module the least of any part of the model. It just doesn't feel right. Which is why I'm detailing other parts first; sort of letting it stew on the back burner until inspiration arrives. I do believe it needs a tail of some sort, not to mention some fairly powerful thrusters to control the mass of the ship + full cargo holds.
I love the Navitas (and still own my original one... the first ship I bought in this game), and you're right, it might be an excellent source for inspiration.

Thanks. As mentioned in a previous post; just doing this for fun.
Or rather...
Doing this because a year and half ago, while waiting for my brand new Lightwave 9.0 to arrive, I tried out a 14-day Eve Online trial. As you can imagine, I didn't get much modeling done... and it's time to change that.

Oh dont worry about my sketches alot of professionals call it horrible then again I never went to art school like they have. I definetly would love to be able to digitially paint and do low poly 3d modeling to enhance accuracy of my digital paintings for other angles.
About the sensible design of eve ships, Ive drawn plenty of my own ships but when friends asked to try tossing some dice at the eve online ships I started to have to throw some rules out the window and pick a few new ones up.
Even in space there is not atmo or friction there is till overall structure stress and some of these ships still should snap in half or apart pulling some high speed turns. However its eve its a game its a sci fi ill let these things fly.
And as you can see with my destoyers they dont look half bad, so just saying you dont have to stick with being sensible with design however some reasonability between the forward section and tail section is needed.
You dont have too take my suggesionts but im sharing some of my perspectives on what makes gallente style thier unique design theme.
Thier designs are not pure organic per sey but mechanical to accomodate for something organic within. Vexor oreinios thorax hulls clearly show this
Thier trinity designs have more of a knightly style to thier looks with layered plates in various areas this however can be also interpetied as fishlike with gills and the sort. Malus Incursus Vexor Tristan and Megathron
And thier last design aspect seems to be based on what you get when you pour motlen metal into a liquid or around an object thats in that liquid atron, brutix, dominix, eberus, moros are heavily styled in this manner.
Then there are the hybrid mixups but only the newer ships have this the hyperion and mymidon are 3/4ths knight style and 1/4 blob style.
well thats all i have for now.

It's hard to say what it'd look like textured, but I think that a tiny bit more detail on the wings could go a long way. Not suprisingly the Galaxy from Planetside had this same issue and it made it look quite bland, especially with the skin it had
Still it looks quite nice imo. I've tried modelling a few times but I usually just end up getting bored/frustrated with it

Since Gallente ships are so reflective, they pull a great deal of their character from the environment. However, the images in my progress reports are just screen-grabs from Lightwave's Modeler program, which doesn't show reflections. So much of that 'Gallente-charm' is missing in them, but will be present when the texture and reflection maps are applied, and true renders are done.
Most certainly the wings are going to get some lovin'. Here's my current design direction.
Last two nights I've opted for sleep over modeling. (Bad modeler!! Bad! ) But hope to make more progress over the weekend.
Cheers

Hey i havent drawn in two days but take breaks often on fun stuff or it will make you sick of it.
I see your ship is well inspired though I did not use reference pictures though I might me able to get it closer to the styled race with my destroyers. I do have several more additional ship classes i sketched out such as landers and juggernaughts.

Rather classic traditional balanced design.
Nothing wrong in general, has lots of influence from many popular scifi crafts but its not EVEish.

Quick status update: still here, and still working on the model... but headed in a new direction.
I'd played around with the new tail section, as suggested using the Navitas as a source, and eventually ended up with this. Ironically, right back where I began with the dragonfly.
Making a ship which resembles a dragonfly is neat (if one does not go overboard; spaceship always takes precedence over animal). But, as others have pointed out, not really 'Eve-ish'. A bit too whimsical for this game.
I've decided to put this design aside for the time being. I'm building a new version which is pure Gallente from the start... and more suited for the Eve universe. Updates as progress occurs.
Cheers!
