A brief check on his contract history shows no finished contracts, ie no failed courier contract.

You sure that failures show up? One of my alts set up a contract that was accepted, but never completed. It never appeared in the other guy's contract history.

Gosh, I thought I would read something like...
"I accepted a courier contract, and paid the 150 million isk collateral. I flew into low sec, and right as I came out of the gate, I was ganked by a team of people from the same corp that had hired me through the contract. I hadn't really noticed before that the item being transported was a Civilian Shield Booster, and I lost the collateral, wasn't paid (because the delivery failed), and I lost my CNR Raven with faction fittings..."

you need to under stand contracts,
contacts are not a NPC thing, they are setup by other players, that thing you destroyed belonged to another player.
how is it fair you can destroy it without loosing your collateral?
