I have a theory, try not to look surprised. Maybe you notice these things, maybe not. Here it is..
Presently, you've got groups like TRI and GS ganking people in empire. No, do not complain.
GS is hitting Exhumer pilots with can flagging, and TRI is suiciding into pimped out Caldari Navy Ravens. On its own, there is not much to talk about. This stuff happens every day.
Two large alliances doing it at the same time is suspicious. When you factor in recent events, you get a possible reasoning for it.
Recruitment.
If you're an experienced PVPer considering a change, looking for groups that do PVP isn't exactly narrowing things down. Rational people will go where they think they'll have the greatest fun. Most of the time, this means going to the alliance that enjoys ****ing others off.
BoB, MC, Ev0ke, KIA and Outbreak became popular choices because they fought with everyone, everywhere. TRI is a popular choice for going against the plans of others, and burning many allied bridges. GoonSwarm has its own language for describing how incredibly easy going they are. RA is up there because they only show up when there's big stuff to kill, and the whole russians = vodka = drunk = comedy stereotype.
The part that explains the empire ganking, is the situation with Tortugans and BoB.
With the Tortugans, many of the alternative choices to BoB disappeared when they got involved in exactly the same kind of warfare. As a result of alienating their core principles and sacrificing some independence, each group suffered internal casualties. In the end it was not as fun as they had imagined. Now they've split ways again, reverting to their previous course of flying around killing stuff wherever they want. How much credibility they get for advertising their 'no politics, no bs' stance is going to stay questionable for a while.
As for the second reason.. When it comes to recruitment today, joining BoB ensures all your PVP desires come true. However, them being backed into a corner makes you consider the increased risks of internal drama and other nasty tension. Even if it never manifests, people looking to join feel like they're gambling somehow.
But when it became apparent the BoB NOL defense was very enthusiastic and GoonSwarm activity is on a downspin, it prompted a reaction by GS. TRI members must of felt it was some kind of preemptive move to poach players leaving the other groups, by asserting themselves as "the most fun alliance ever" through empire ganks.
Whether or not this war ends soon, people feel like it might/should. Alliances are noticing this, and being very opportunistic about it. An important part of the war now is seeing who can poach members the best. It could have just as much impact on bringing it to an end as all the ships killed ever did.
And like I said, it's just a theory. This is how I've interpreted current events, and there is no real evidence to prove it one way or the other. I'm just very amused that for once, the casualties are actually innocent.
Damn carebears. _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |

Interesting perspective.
While talking to an old friend who empire PVP's, I considered joining with an alt for a while, just to randomize things a bit.
Yes, the POS warfare gets stale, the constant moving 150 jumps to get a fight gets stale, and many other things of major 0.0 alliance warfare gets stale.
Now that fights are on my doorstep, life is no longer stale.

I think empire ganks as a recruitment tool are not effective to get in 0.0 pvpers. I know i enjoy 10vs10 - 30vs30 fights the most, where the guy at the other computer im shooting at is the challenge, not how to get around gameplay restrictions to make carebears cry, or battle the lag more than the red ships. Dont get me wrong, griefing can be fun, but the people who would join an alliance based on that would most probably go for privateers or some similar empire wardec corp.
Im pretty sure that its in both cases just seasoned pvpers who are looking for something to get a laugh out of, not some permanent trend of vets going to empire spreading mayhem for all eternity.
As for the political stuff you spiced your post with, sounds far-fetched and quite irrelevant to your "theory". Tri has always enjoyed spreading grief, and i believe goonswarm is famous for it. Throwing those other alliances you mentioned into the mix isnt necessary nor sensible imo.

I doubt it's anything that complex.
Pimped CNR suicide ganking have always been profitable (even more recently, however, with the ever-increasing price of gist mods), but for some reason, it wasn't really common knowledge. But as more people do it, that knowledge is spreading, inducing more people to do it.
As for hulks in high-sec, maybe some in GS felt the need of a change, to have a break time from the lagfest in Delve?

I think all the people with their pathetic one-liners should shut the hell up and actually participate in giving these forums some content worth reading. Honestly, it's getting worse every day.
DG posted something which was worth reading regardless if you found it untrue, ridiculous or if you completely agree with him.
EVE is a great game, greater content wise than any game I have played (and I was kicking ass on my tapedeck Commodore 64 in the day and basicly played every popular title or cult game out there) But it is the only game with a forum that is lately becoming completely worthless. Just scroll up and down this thread and just honestly ask yourself what the point is all the posts in it. Out of all the responses maybe 5 where actually on topic and not some sad, sarcastic, quasi-whitty statement.
Ps. This is not just intended to the goons, but to also every alt poster and Eve player that tries to derail threads. If you don't have anything to say regarding the content of a thread just rephrain from posting in it.
To get down to DG's post, we've been seeing more and more Coalition gangs down in Catch and Providence the last few weeks, the assault on NOL as mentioned by BOB in a recent thread has been halted (albeit temporarily)and alot of them are fanning out and having fun elsewhere, including empire.
I think Tri and Goon moves in empire should not be seen as anything more as having fun, maybe they might put their time there to good use, but I don't think this is some evil masterplan coming to fruition.

In Tri's case, probably. In Goons case? Just lame ganking. It speaks volumes that one alliance is taking on some of the most expensive combat ships in the game, and that the other is going for miners....

I forsee these large scale suicide gankings of everything faction or officer to be the end of suiciding as we know it. I mean what is the meaning in striving for the pimped out ship if you know a group of lowlifes will just gank it at first light anyways?
CCP will have to nerf it now, it's Zombie smartbombing Yulai all over again.

Recruiting through displaying your talents is one way. I guess blowing up ships where there is a larger audience could attract publicity, and through that, recruits.
I like the fact that you can do it (suicide gank), but awknowledge the fact that if overdone, it is subject to the nerfbat. I dunno, I guess it's not easy designing a game

Hmmm this gives me an idea on how to attract wide eyed empire noobs to INFOD, if suicide ganking in highsec is enough impress them, then they will be blown away by our badger and bestower kills, truely the endgame of pvp. _________

I hate to poke holes in your theory, but afaik most tri corps have closed recruitment atm. Ours certainly does and we were doing lots of the recent ganking. I guess kinda a good possible analysis even if you are reading a bit too much into it though.

I'm pretty sure that the only real reason TRI do it is because they want to make quick money. As an alliance they can get enough people to run a successful empire gank and as PvPers they like to kill.

It's just a quick and easy way to make isk for a corp without having to mine/npc/trade. I wouldn't say sitting for hours on end waiting for a good target is comparable to PVP in fun-factor =P
If this is indeed a way to make isk by suiciding stuff, then they are doing it wrong. Not the ideea mind you, but the implementation. :) You could make more if you did a bit of research first.

All I did was try to explain some current events with TRI and GS. If you really want to generalize:
- all major alliances care about their image - all major alliances will attention *****
Ganking in empire is just one way to keep your alliance on people's minds. I never implied empire ganking would attract hardcore pvpers on its own, this is like a tiebreaker more than anything when you're trying to chose between two pvp-heavy groups.
It isn't a master plan either, and there are other better examples. Most people are consciously aware of stuff that'll get their alliance some public attention.
CAOD is a better example, because you don't get kills or money for posting. There's also a good chance it'll aggravate you if you actually spend time reading, so it's not even a fun place to be sometimes.
For all the career ****posters in GoonSwarm..
- most of them wouldn't be doing it on their own, or come to CAOD at all - some of them go straight to reply, and never visit the thread again - a few are sharing threads and tag teaming
Unless these incredibly funny people are getting paid to waste their time every day, they're tryin' to represent. Cause most of their recruits are pubbies who join SA for GS.

Yes, DG, I will complain. Both Triumvirate and GoonSwarm are rephrehensible barbarians who prey on the weak when they cannot manage to sate their bloodlust on properly matched opponents. But, this is par for the course.. the 'Aligned' groups like Goonswarm and their pets, and the other side called BoB do this all the time.
There is an alternative... there are NRDS groups to join, that aren't on either side.
Don't be blue or red.. be Grey. Sure, its harder. But worthy things in life usually are. With God, All Things are Possible Probable is another matter, entirely. |

Edited by: Asuka Mei on 27/02/2008 09:33:10 Its understandable that you would not want us to know your tactics, fair enough.
You dont want us mining in high sec and its impossible for us to mine in 0.0. Low sec there is just no reward vs the risk. So if I may ask... where would you like us to mine?
Im pretty new to the game and I only recently finished training for my hulk. In 0.0 we cant kill the rats so we cant mine there. You might say "Get some one to protect you while you mine", but that means I can only mine when my friend is online and im sure he doesnt want to sit and watch me mine for hours.
Im also not sure on how to go about mining in 0.0. Ive got no pvp experience and Ive only been to 0.0 once... and it didn't end well for me.
A lot of ppl want us to move to 0.0 but then also tell us not to go if we cant afford to lose our ship. What they fail to realize is that we are miners... we will never be able to afford to lose our ships :/
How ever, I do like the feeling the goons have given me as a miner. Just makes the game a bit more fun :)

I totally get the idea of ganking CNRs , especially those belonging to obvious isk seller alts. Suicidie ganking one can't be that easy, and im sure that you must get some nice loot drops from them. That makes sense. You take a fair losses in exchange for loot and a SWEET killmail, in excahnge for nailing someone who is probably an ISK seller and therefore beyond contempt.
But why the hell would you bother going for Hulks ? I mean seriously.... The best it'll drop is modulated strips, while not the cheapest things out there aren't rare or valuable in the grand scheme of things. Plus, your attacking people who genuinely can't fight back. Ok, people suckered by can swapping should know better, but thats not really enough reason to divorce them from their ship. I mean... whats so offencive about mining veld?
Im also kinda disappointed in the whole 'they should be out in 0.0' thing. Industrial pilots who may genuinely have almost no combat skills beyond cruiser 5 for ultimate osprey joy, and have spent a huge amount of time working on T2 production, resreach and refining skills can be entirely forgiven for not wanting to go out to 'the front lines' where there assets are risked. It would be like going on a killing spree in the local shopping centre of your choice and when the cops ask you why you tell them 'because they didn't want to die and just went about their buisness'...
Its irrational and frankly its the type of thing that this game doesn't need. As if the current crop of grief-war corps, as well as a nearly uninhabitable low-sec, we have to put up with one of the biggest alliances taking out some frustration on people who don't even have guns fitted.
Why not send out the same pilots to go after low sec carriers and motherships ? Or whipe out some sentry tankers ?
Why do you feel the need to attack the player base for a few really REALLY cheap kills (since your not even suiciding) when you could actually contribute to the community?
I dunno how any of you get your kicks, but to be honest I enjoy a fight, not a slaughter.

Ummm, you are wrong, do a touch more research next time on the topic...
1) CCP published the facts, GS named it all by themselves 2) Wiki quote "According to scholar John Esposito, Jihad requires Muslims to "struggle in the way of God" or "to struggle to improve one's self and/or society."[3][4] Jihad is directed against the devil's inducements, aspects of one's own self, or against a visible enemy.[1][5] The four major categories of jihad that are recognized are Jihad against one's own self (Jihad al-Nafs), Jihad of the tongue, Jihad of the hand, and Jihad of the sword.[5] Within Islamic jurisprudence, the term jihad is usually used in reference to military combat" This would definately fall under Jihad of the sword, possibly of the hand as well. 3) STOP BEING SO SENSITIVE!!! (j/k)
And same question as a previous poster (page 1) I would have to question the cost of this little action GS is taking I would have to think they are about even on ISK totals of losses delt vs. losses taken.
My final comments, I do think its more than a little arrogant of GS to assume they can force older pilots into 0.0 with these tactics. And perhaps a little foolish as well, if anything they're only stirring the empire based pilots up who will eventually rally up to stop them. I'd like to see the surprise look when they drop in on a bait Hulk, and find themselves tackled and podded by some unhappy former victims. With turrets, Concord, and Empire resources behind the Empire pilots, GS could find that losses total rapidly climbing to a painful level...

I wonder what would happen if I decided to call one of my EVE projects names like "the big-nosed plot to rule EVE" with a corp name referencing 2nd WW era political ideals.
My point is that I dont think it suits CCP to lack imagination to simply tell GS. "look guys, we cant have references to real world sensitive topics, so how about you call it something other than Jihad?".

ji+had ûnoun 1. a holy war undertaken as a sacred duty by Muslims. 2. any vigorous, emotional crusade for an idea or principle.
Again I strongly disagree, what about Muslim players who believe in the non violent aspects of a Jihad? What about the 50,000 players with semi-offensive names, or those with non-RP styled names? And to take it a step further, lets start censoring all religious references, as one of the youngest religions on the planet, Christianity should be getting bashed on a regular basis, Judaism, Buddhism, Catholicism, etc. etc. (and for that matter talk to a theology expert, the term Jihad stretches FAR beyond the realms of Muslim, Middle Eastern, or even EurAsian cultures... see definition of the word above )
CCP is doing the right thing, they report it exactly how it is, reporting on news is not approving of it, it's an informational article (and valuable one for Empire players) that they have taken a GOOD approach to, report the facts, let the players decide the rest for themselves. If you personally find it offensive, go find a GS member and take it out on them, not CCP.
Try to understand three basics on this; EVE is an international MMO, they really can't discriminate against anyone or they lose business. Censorship is a dangerous thing, and easily goes beyond "protective" They run the game, they are not (nor ever have been) "Big Brother"
ps - Thank you CCP for keeping us informed in an unbiased and impartial method!

Right, lest just ban words like "crusade", "terrorist", "bomb" as well. Maybe even "war" too huh? And "Eve"online? surely thats not pc. "new eden" huh, we better change that too. "Insurgency" must be cutting it a bit fine as well. Tell you what, lets call its "daisy picking online" instead.
I might also point in you in the direction of the sci-fi novels of Frank Herbert, one of the most popular and award winning sci fi authors ever. Amazingly enough a pivotal moment in the back story of this far future post apocalyptic struggle of man-kind isolated from its former home (sound familiar?) was called the "butlerian jihad". Now there is a whole lot of books we gotta burn too. You got any matches?

You seem very worked up, wanting to defend against an imaginary threat...
I guess there is a line. I am not suggesting we burn books, or ban certain words. If you got that from what I wrote, the you are reading too much into it.
I am pointing out that putting "jihad" and "suicide"-ganking together in a newsitem is beneath CCP, or at least used to be.
Now all I need to do is press F1-8 and have a "catch-phrase" to play.
I will form an Incredible Mob Of Fat People, and go around crashing nodes on purpose and whine about it on CAOD for months and months... WoW is THAT way ->

From a classical historical perspective, yes, you are very wrong. Typically if you have to type something like "now I am no X, so I may be wrong, but.." means that you are, in fact, going to be wrong and you should stop typing.
So... by your logic, people should only open their mouth, or put pen to paper if they think themselves infallible?
I dont normally respond to GS posts, because they dont contain anything of substance, but in this case I am making an exeption.
Granted, I should have bothered to look it up on The Internet to verify beyond doubt the truth in what I write. To be frank, I still find difference in the way the word "Jihad" has been used historicly, which only reaffirms my point
- that the recent "bomb-the-infidels"-variant, is something very much connected to real world issues, that a game development and publishing company should steer clear of.

I would believe individuals.
But I don't believe for one second, that two big alliances are completely indifferent to the drama and attention they'd get from empire ganks.
Doing it at the same time, roleplaying it, advertising it on a website... "You're stupid its for fun!", "NO WAY ITS ALL ABOUT THE ISK!". Yeah, even if you like the smell of your own farts, that's still crap you're smelling.
If someone is actually stupid enough to get angry over my theory, it's because I didn't imply their e-confidence and e-morale was shattered. That would've been so much easier to troll than "you care what others think", and "you're trying hard to impress".
It's not really a secret, but alliance people always try to hide it. Every established group has twirled for the public at some point, and at least recruitment is one of the better reasons.
What is so bad about admitting you'd like to wear makeup, put on a dress, dance for others, and be loved? Seriously. _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |

Originally by: DigitalCommunist But when it became apparent the BoB NOL defense was very enthusiastic and GoonSwarm activity is on a downspin, it prompted a reaction by GS. TRI members must of felt it was some kind of preemptive move to poach players leaving the other groups, by asserting themselves as "the most fun alliance ever" through empire ganks.
You're reading too much into it.
One corp in Tri started doing it because they had members that had experience doing it before, worked out exactly how much they could make in a night of decent suicides compared to the cost; the lulz factor came into the picture after that. It's easy money.
They were careful about trying to keep it under wraps for 2 reasons; the less publicity it got, the longer and more often they could keep doing it. They waited about 48 hours before posting kills/losses to the tri boards for the suicdes to keep them off the front page etc.
Before long, angel picked it up. Obviously, she was too busy thinking about shoes to consider that keeping it under wraps would increase the lifespan of our little earner; before long there were a handful of tri gangs suiciding complete crap, barely making profit; again, I assume angel was too busy thinking about shoes to do actual maths and work out they were making no money.
