1, they look the best when you roll them, from a RP (awesome bounty hunter!) perspective, before you learn that it realy dosen't work like that.
2 The Gallente, they are the enemy of the Caldari, their mortal enemy. They are French. This is something bad to be honest, as long as Brits play the game they will RP the future enemies of the French - petty but that was part of the reason I went Caldari.
This is just going up as my view and not to derail another thread on a similar topic. Thankyou.

The Gallente are not French. They are descended from from some French people. It's been probably thousands of years since the Gallente considered themselves "French" and I'm sure there has been at least some interbreeding in that time.
As far as I know, the English are mainly descended from Vikings (with some Celtic ancestry too, I'm sure). Does that mean English = Vikings?
I'm sorry the whole Gallente = French = lol thing gets on my nerves after a while.

Reasons why your wrong:
1/ Caldari are blatantly the americans of Eve.
AND
2/ The Americans are historically allies of the French.
Therefore the whole Brits + RP + French thing is wrong.
They don;t necessarily look the coolest, Minmatar + Amarr Females look pretty merciless tbh...

I originally rolled Caldari because the few player guides available at the time had Civire listed for the "example" race, with the skill choices and attributes mapped out so you'd get a good amount of starting SP and fairly good combat attributes. I didn't want to screw up so I just went with the example.
Obviously, this was possible with other races... but there you go.

#1 is correct. I chose Caldari because they are capitalist and sounded like good old America where I'm from. They also looked the least "out there" with weird hairstyles and stuff.
#2 is wrong. It is a well known fact that the French, especially Parisians are ungrateful snobs. All Americans know this and dislike the French. Basically people see "French" and are immediately turned off by Gallente, however I love their ships and only fly them.

If you disagree with me and want to prove me wrong why not actually try instead of spouting trivial comments.
*********
Granted Kahega,
Well I see the Caldari as uber capitalistic, which I see as quite similar to American culture. I see a very military orientated culture, which I see as quite similar to American culture.
Perhaps it is my first impression of the game jumping in here but they are also the only race which appears, at face value, to be a super power.
That is the way I see it. It's not exactly clear cut who is who but to me the Caldari as the least ambiguous of the races.

Actually #1 is wrong. The Caldari are blatantly a mixture of Russian and Asian cultures. Look at the names of their solar systems, how they look, and their ship designs! The ships are pure military, the solarsystem names are generally either Chinese sounding or Russian sounding, and their appearance is EASILY 'Standard Russian' save for the Bloodlines race which is blatant oriental (like all other bloodlines XD )
And you're wrong about #1 for another reason. American's aren't capitalistic. At least not like the Caldari are. Americans rely heavily on capitalism, yes, but it doesn't control anything. The ruling government body does. The Caldari State is a Capitalistic State. Totalarian Government. Like Communism (Russia and China. The two most easily recognizable race bases in the Caldari). Nothing like America is right now.
#2 is bull****, too. The french aren't ungrateful snobs. They just can't fight worth a ****. They got soft because of their culture. They're well known for being some of the most artistic people in the world, along with some of the best with food, wines, other spirits, and entertainment. The Gallente in EvE may be of French origin, but obviously they've reverted to what I like to call "Napoleanism". In other words. They can bloody well fight.

Wow, 'why I chose caldari' in game, degenerates into RL bigotry and racism in less than two pages.
Very big and clever. Oh yes.
I chose Caldari, because I like the cyberpunk genre, and Caldari sounded pretty close. I liked the 'militaristic and organised' part too. The fact that their faces look approximately human was just a bonus.
For sure I had no clue as to what the implications of Caldari ships, in terms of game balance were, nor did I have any idea as to the relevance of stats.
Gallente seemed hedonistic wishy-washy liberals. Amarr had the 'omg slaver' stereotype. Minmatar have the 'tribal-ex-slaves' thing going on.
Caldari ... was the logical, and attractive alternative.

Well done.
Both a gross oversimplification of Parisian people and a blatant, and frankly ridiculous, generalisation as to the thoughts of "All americans"
I'm sorry, have you been to Paris? They are obviously ungratefully snobs, and anyone disagreeing with me is foolish and uninformed. I say "All Americans" because the vast majority of Americans dislike the French. The number of Americans that like the French is statistically insignificant, so PLEASE take your obvious bias toward French people elsewhere.
1/ You said "all americans".
2/ Yes I have been to Paris. I am unbiased towards the French, I have seen aspects of their national personality that I like and dislike. I am however biased towards people who make statements like you did: "all americans" suddenly turning into "the vast majority of" and also claiming that an entire nation (thats what, 300 million people?) flatly dislikes another (entire) nation of people. Even if it were true, which it is not, I doubt you should be the authority to state it. My problem is not with what you believe, it is the way you said it. I couldn't care less if you're stupid enough to believe what you said but to try and deconstruct what I said with obviously flawed statements which are devoid of truth is just insulting.
No harm done however.

There's one very prominent reason that is probably more important than any other.
1) They aren't Amarr.
Note: this isn't an Amarr whine. I personally like the fact that their ships suck before you get into a Battleship. ---- One day...one day General will be worth reading.

If I remember correctly, only the Gallente main bloodline are related to the French, and considering that ancestral tie is extremely old, it seems weird to consider this valid. Caldari are the most common race for several reasons but, i'm sorry, you can't really tie it to blood origin, not EVERYBODY is that conceited.
None the less, Gallente 4tw. I'm sorry, but drones man....drones.

I also chose the Caldari because they seem to be a fusion of American/Japanese culture. In my opinion, both America and Japan are relatively family/duty-oriented (despite our media), dedicated to working hard, and heavily capitalist. For example, a disproportionate amount of mega-corporations in RL are American or Japanese.
I also considered Amarr or Gallente...the Gallente are very engaging, and I consider them to be an amalgamation of modern European countries. Very focused on the rights of the individual, freedom, and the arts. (Sorry, my fellow Americans, but Europe often outstrips us there.)
The Amarr seem to be drawn from a mix of Catholic and Eastern Orthodox ancestries. In fact, the Amarr remind me of nothing so much as the Byzantine Empire. Huge, ungainly, and very bureaucratic.
The Minmatar are, of course, the third world in many ways, though also young, strong, and growing fast. Go minnie!
This is, of course, my perspective. I mainly chose them because I value many of the same things the Caldari are said to embody: duty, family, and work.
Yes, I am a RPer. --------

Actually the people who get refered to the game also get taught and you have to admit, Caldari ships are the easiest to understand. Missiles use no cap, always hit so tracking isnt a problem. Optimal and falloff isnt a problem you just need to work out flight time etc. Shield boosting is easier that armor reps cause its quick.

Well you do have a point. The 4 choices (from a role-play perspective) are: 1) fascist holy empire, 2) rag tag ex-slaves, 3) narcissistic, meddling descendants of the French, and 4) high tech and highly talented soldiers who won a war of independence.
Its not hard to see why 4) is so much more popular, to the uninitiated noob.
Its also always struck me as odd why the Gallente are described as "descended from the French". I mean it's obviously not a problem for me (seeing as I picked it), but it seems so unnecessary. The games is set 10's of thousands of years in the future, after a perioid of massive colonization, a huge catastrophic dark age, and a complete rebuilding of society from the stone age and up. What possible relevance does the "French" thing have? Its not like all the others have got a similar label- Gallente are the only group in the game to have their specific, pre-EVE-gate origins spelled out, and I can't honestly see why. And bearing in mind RL cultural biases, it seems positively counter-productive. ------

The really funny thing is that many of the ships names are not French, but Greek. I think that there was a subconscious mistake when describing the Gallente, they wanted to be the European part of the races that consisted EVE (logically one power block in ancient earth would be European Union).

Your statements are ignorant. The fact that you feel you have the right to judge how ALL the french are based on your limited experiences during the span of your puny insignificant lifetime makes me sick. Along your same line of reasoning I could say that Americans dislike the french because they see so much of themselves in the french. Arrogant, ungrateful snobs. That is of course, if I were to use your same line of reasoning, I'm nowhere near that ignorant however.

Its called hyperbole. There is a lot of truth in that the average American has a more hostile disposition towards French than any other country whether anyone else feels its justified or not. That would be the statement without hyperbole. Try reading the subtext before you get butt-hurt.

Being a relatively aged Caldari character, I can honestly say I compared Missiles and Turrets, and Shields and Armor, them being the tactical styles of the four races. I just liked the general idea of shields and missiles, so my decision was made. I didn't look at the gameplay of them, just my personality shining through influencing my pick.

Edited by: Kirjava on 27/02/2008 09:40:14 Okay, I am laughing at how this has gone.
My point I tried to make about the French thing is why? Why on Earth do you name a specific race as essentially the French? It just seems naive on CCP's part that this won't affect people when picking for the RP. The rivalry between France and Britain is staggering still so why put it in? AnAnarchist, not trying to target anyone but CCP labeled the Gallente as French and poked the bees nest on that one, if the Minmatar were Italian it would have been the same thread about that.
Point is, I hope someone in CCP has read this and sends someone a memo to get the French description out of the Gallente, I know the Caldari are supposed to be Japanese/Finnish but thats not what new peeps see first.
I also did call it petty in the OP for what it's worth but a few people seem to have overlooked what I thought of it.

1. Description: Militaristic capitalists, the only democracy, freed slaves/underdogs, religious zealots/slavers. Hmm, I know where I'm signing up!
2. Stats: Caldari (and not just Achuras) have the lowest base Charisma overall. I actually picked Deteis for good int/mem with balanced other stats, but I am glad the bloodline choice kept me from REALLY screwing myself in Per/Will (Intaki 3 perception WTF?). Pretty much, Caldari base builds have the stats where they matter (Per/Int) more so than most races do. Khanid Cyberknights and Brutor Slave Children notwithstanding.
3. Kestrel/Caracal/Drake/Raven is easy mode for PVE. Adapting them for PVP takes some work, though, as most Caldari ships are pants solo. Scram and MWD in tank slots ftl. . . though I admit they'd be imbalanced if they didn't have to make that tradeoff. -------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. You mean none of you guys used up a trial account or two to get a picture of what the game is like?
Eve attribute and skill system makes it very clear Charisma is the dumpstat, even for a jack of all trades like me. Really, only exception is fleet command, or maybe alliance/corp management and trading to some extent.
So, Achura it is.
What makes the choice even easier is that faction means so very little, if anything at all. Which I think is great, you should never be locked and pigeonholed in a sandbox game.
As for making the choice for RP reasons, well, Gallente without a doubt. Freedom and democracy, clearly more important then anything else.

From a RP POV, I personaly loathe freedom and deomocracy in the game. Why?
Because I play a game where I am merciless and in which we build empires and piracy. From a RP pov I would have chosen Ammar, but I am not hardcore RPer but it's different person to person, or there would be no RP other than Gallente.

This thread could have been interesting if the real life bigotry and anti *Insert country here* ramblings had not been introduced. EVE Online is set many thousands of years removed from the Earth of old. French, American, Russian, British etc are as distant a memory as cavemen are to us today. In the NEW Eden Universe you can roleplay Amarr, Caldari, Gallente or Minmatar. References to real life Nations is completely irrelevant.
This thread will be locked since moderating out all of the racial rubbish would make it look horrible.
For future reference you should all be advised that posts which are blatantly bigoted or racist will earn you a warning and possible ban.
