After this recent shut-down, I was thinking about EvE, and how it differs from MMOs I've played. You know, more shut-downs, more little problems, etc.
And then I started thinking about the player base and the people who run this game. For all the little inconveniences I encounter in this game, I've come to believe that they are all worth it.
I'm a long-time gamer, and I played 3 other MMOs before I came over to EvE. In none of these games - as polished as they might be - was the community anywhere near the level of good humor and wit as that of EvE...and developer/GM support was far less personal or well-intentioned.
Granted, the forums are often full of trolls, whines, and in-game chat full of smack-talkers. But for every person who shoots off his mouth of fingers, there are about ten who have a bit of perspective.
And, yes, I know the GMs are often busy and don't get around to blocking every ISK seller out there. But they do a pretty darn good job, even with 200K subscribers who think that the petition button has to be used frequently lest it gum up and not work when you really need it. (Guilty here )
Yet every petition I've filed has been answered politely and quickly, and when I've requested more details, I was responded to with professionalisms and politeness.
But what I find even more amazing is the immense amount of developer feed-back and community involvement constantly displayed by CCP employees. Consider the recent issues with the "graveyard" and secure can clean-up. CCPPrismX didn't state "my way or the highway", or ignore the issue, he clearly listed why he couldn't make it a partial fix and offered to mitigate the problem any way he ethically could.
I have no intention of giving CCPWrangler a hug, but I really enjoy this game, not only because of the gameplay, but also because of the devs, GMs, and (most of) the players.
That's more than worth a few inconveniences. --------

Thirded. CCP don't get enough credit. The game may not be moving in a direction I truly appreciate at the moment, but that's more a matter of personal preference (and, for all I know, the game may be about to take a turn in a direction I like). -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire "Look, pa! This one should represent the forums fairly well.

I do like the fact that CCP is not ASIAN based.
Not that I did'nt thouroughly enjoy the last MMO I played that was, but after reading the OP's opening post I can't find a single thing I could not agree with.

Asian based? Would that be Blizzard? Or FFXI? I don't really know where game companies keep their servers. Except for CCP. --------

To everyone at CCP, whatever your job, I thank you for bringing the experience that is EVE to us all.
I may whine when something does not go my way, but I'm still paying, and I'm still playing, and I will defend eve from any outsider who has a sour opinion of your game.

Signed,
Simple fact is before I played EVE I played loads of other PC games and never played any MMO's. Now I only play EVE (have'nt bought another PC game since starting my sub in Dec 06) and I love the MMO concept, single player games just don't interest me anymore.
And to CCP, you are doing a great job, the sheer depth and complexity of this game is amazing and I'm sure will keep the playerbase absorbed and entertained for years to come.

Eve is good but still had many imperfections, some of which it will never get rid of. Think it is safe to say it is the best MMO for me of the ones currently out there for the time being

It's true.
Forums tend to be rather skewed, because people don't tend to post when it's 'all ok' - too busy playing I guess :).
So it can often seem like everyone's moaning.
When it's not true. I've been here for ... ooh about 3 years now, and I still enjoy the game enough to run 3 accounts.

Yep despite the downsides, eve still is a very immersive experience and Im still here and as addicted as ever. Just please ccp, dont loose sight of your original vision of a harsh world and harsh, unforgiving game mechanics. Dont fold to the endless whines in the hope you might increase your playerbase. Chances are you will loose all your current hardcore subbies who relish in the uniqueness of eves environment.

To be honest i dont think that eve has more downtime than other MMOs. In other MMOs though the shutdown will only affect one server so only a subset of the players are affected. Since in eve all the server work together to run on instance if a server goes down it affects all players hence the whining. I think this is a small price to pay though for the awesomness that is one universe.

This community are like all the others, including WoW, including L2, including EQ2, including whatever mmo you want. They're made of people. The devs are people. They're not magical developers.
Could have said thanks to the devs without subtly including the elitist rhetoric.

I don't post a lot in the forums, though I read them a lot.
Well, this post sure deserves a reply.
I started out with EvE back in 2003. But quit it after half a year for other MMOs. I had a couple of eve-breaks in the meantime, but what is more important to me, that I always came back. Shows me what a damn fine game this is. No other game in played has that much immersion and depth
At the moment I really enjoy it again and I don't see an end to this.
Thanks for the decent game and please keep up the good work, CCP. *thumbs up*

I will sign this and add my own experiences. Every time I've submitted a petition and or one of my friends has, it has been answered professionally and honestly. GM's have always tried to help me when I had questions and or problems, and every single time I've said thank you, I've gotten a 'you're welcome' back. <3
We get passionate and heatedly debate changes on the forums, because CCP has created a game for us to get passionate about. And to the guys that oversee the servers, thank you so much, I swear you guys never sleep. Anytime of day, any day of the year, the response to any server problem is almost immediate. Thanks
