After this recent shut-down, I was thinking about EvE, and how it differs from MMOs I've played. You know, more shut-downs, more little problems, etc.
And then I started thinking about the player base and the people who run this game. For all the little inconveniences I encounter in this game, I've come to believe that they are all worth it.
I'm a long-time gamer, and I played 3 other MMOs before I came over to EvE. In none of these games - as polished as they might be - was the community anywhere near the level of good humor and wit as that of EvE...and developer/GM support was far less personal or well-intentioned.
Granted, the forums are often full of trolls, whines, and in-game chat full of smack-talkers. But for every person who shoots off his mouth of fingers, there are about ten who have a bit of perspective.
And, yes, I know the GMs are often busy and don't get around to blocking every ISK seller out there. But they do a pretty darn good job, even with 200K subscribers who think that the petition button has to be used frequently lest it gum up and not work when you really need it. (Guilty here )
Yet every petition I've filed has been answered politely and quickly, and when I've requested more details, I was responded to with professionalisms and politeness.
But what I find even more amazing is the immense amount of developer feed-back and community involvement constantly displayed by CCP employees. Consider the recent issues with the "graveyard" and secure can clean-up. CCPPrismX didn't state "my way or the highway", or ignore the issue, he clearly listed why he couldn't make it a partial fix and offered to mitigate the problem any way he ethically could.
I have no intention of giving CCPWrangler a hug, but I really enjoy this game, not only because of the gameplay, but also because of the devs, GMs, and (most of) the players.
That's more than worth a few inconveniences. --------

Thirded. CCP don't get enough credit. The game may not be moving in a direction I truly appreciate at the moment, but that's more a matter of personal preference (and, for all I know, the game may be about to take a turn in a direction I like). -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire "Look, pa! I do like the fact that CCP is not ASIAN based.
Not that I did'nt thouroughly enjoy the last MMO I played that was, but after reading the OP's opening post I can't find a single thing I could not agree with.

Asian based? Would that be Blizzard? Or FFXI? I don't really know where game companies keep their servers. Except for CCP. --------

Simple fact is before I played EVE I played loads of other PC games and never played any MMO's. Now I only play EVE (have'nt bought another PC game since starting my sub in Dec 06) and I love the MMO concept, single player games just don't interest me anymore.
And to CCP, you are doing a great job, the sheer depth and complexity of this game is amazing and I'm sure will keep the playerbase absorbed and entertained for years to come.

It's true.
Forums tend to be rather skewed, because people don't tend to post when it's 'all ok' - too busy playing I guess :).
So it can often seem like everyone's moaning.
When it's not true. I've been here for ... ooh about 3 years now, and I still enjoy the game enough to run 3 accounts.

Yep despite the downsides, eve still is a very immersive experience and Im still here and as addicted as ever. Just please ccp, dont loose sight of your original vision of a harsh world and harsh, unforgiving game mechanics. Dont fold to the endless whines in the hope you might increase your playerbase. Chances are you will loose all your current hardcore subbies who relish in the uniqueness of eves environment.

To be honest i dont think that eve has more downtime than other MMOs. In other MMOs though the shutdown will only affect one server so only a subset of the players are affected. Since in eve all the server work together to run on instance if a server goes down it affects all players hence the whining. I think this is a small price to pay though for the awesomness that is one universe.

I don't post a lot in the forums, though I read them a lot.
Well, this post sure deserves a reply.
I started out with EvE back in 2003. But quit it after half a year for other MMOs. I had a couple of eve-breaks in the meantime, but what is more important to me, that I always came back. Shows me what a damn fine game this is. No other game in played has that much immersion and depth
At the moment I really enjoy it again and I don't see an end to this.
Thanks for the decent game and please keep up the good work, CCP. *thumbs up*

I will sign this and add my own experiences. Every time I've submitted a petition and or one of my friends has, it has been answered professionally and honestly. GM's have always tried to help me when I had questions and or problems, and every single time I've said thank you, I've gotten a 'you're welcome' back. <3
We get passionate and heatedly debate changes on the forums, because CCP has created a game for us to get passionate about. And to the guys that oversee the servers, thank you so much, I swear you guys never sleep. Anytime of day, any day of the year, the response to any server problem is almost immediate. Thanks

CCP you answer when they say you are good but you never answered on my posts about balance issues, never. Back on topic now, no i dont think gms do there job nor do i think that dev team does its job very good (look balance issues), do they try? yes they try, but they get paid for that job so they need to try more and more as we all try our best and beyond on our real life jobs. I can say some examples but nevermind.
The only team in CCP i have respect is the forum moderators, that have to read all that crap (yes including mine), read every post and see if it needs moderation, and also pass 'the juice' to the upper tier people that drink their coffes on the top floor. Only those guys deserve respect, cause reading pages and pages and some more pages full of crap is very hard especially in front of a computer screen.

I'll add props of my own here. The GMs really do care about what happens to EVE, and the forums are well policed by moderators. Most of the time, changes to mechanics are dealt out reasonably, not in accordance with whine threads. The petitions are always answered politely and timely, even if they all result in the same answer (Logs show nothing...). All in all, I enjoy the world CCP has created immensely, and plug it to customers whenever I can (I work in the gaming retail business). So take 5 minutes off from work, scroll through this thread, and feel pride at what you have accomplished.

Heh, zeba, don't worry about the trolls.
Yeah, I don't enjoy some things about Eve, like the lag in Jita or Motsu or Umokka or...but then I also have to think about all the times it ISN'T lagging, and all the fun I have had with this game. So, that's one reason I wrote the post.
Also, I think that, as a game company, CCP is quite accomplished at running an MMO, and I believe that, overall, they've performed better than any other MMO out there when it comes to truly caring about their players. --------

I've been following EVE for well over a year now and playing on and off. Sure there are things that annoy me, and sure there are plenty of things I would like to see changed.
CCP in my opinion is doing a fantastic job, and has made incredible improvements in both quality and customer service. Decisions to changes in game play while maybe not popular I believe to have been fair and well thought out. Many changes that were particularly unpopular at the time the change was made have turned out very well.
The interactivity of the devs and the comunity is also wonderful.
Seeing how this company works and what it has done and where it's going really makes me wish I could work with CCP. Maybe one day I will.
Good job guys, and I'm anxiously awaiting to see what's comming out next.
Hopefully soon we can get more news about World of Darkness.

Edited by: skuko on 05/03/2008 10:06:30 Edited by: skuko on 05/03/2008 10:05:20 my story:
i have been following eve online since 2004, tried to play a couple of times, but always gave it up after a month. nevertheless, i read and still read the forums daily, so one can say i've been here all the time. all this time i've played wow (covers in fear), not because of the game anymore, but because of the people, because of my friends playing it. however, for some reason, i kept returning to eve, as if it had a siren voice calling me back all the time.
last august, i created this "wannabe r i d d i c k" caldari and i persevered and kept playing eve, despite the eventual boredom from running missions. and now, after half a year with my essential fitting and learning skills done, i'm having a BLAST! see, i'm not the "instant gratification" type of guy, but it took me about 3 years to fully understand and appreciate this in eve.
i want to thank CCP from the bottom of my heart for this SPECTACULAR game.
AND i want to thank all of you for NOT being a WoW-like community
edit: hehe, some words just don't make it trough the filter

I agree here. I remember multi-week petition queues and it works very well now. Bug reporting is great too. I am pleased with game balance in sub-capital ships. Graphics looks awasome and EVE Voice is very good idea too.
Unfortunately there is HUGE problem with lag in large battles or medium large battles involving fighters/capitals. Thanks to current game mechanics such fights are required if you want to hold space so you can't really avoid them. Server performance is horrible. Yesterday 300+ people crashed a node. I remember our fights in the last year, we were crashing nodes with 600+ people and 300+ fights were laggy but playable. This NFS project is one great disaster.
So thanks for CCP for a great game but there will be no hug until you fix lag.

Congratulations CCP you are PERFECT.
Can we get some tips so we can be perfect in our jobs as well? Maybe make a topic with title "Copy CCP Perfection 101"
1. The GMs/Devs already get 5362 posts a day about how they're horrible. This is the one thread that respects what good they do for the community, and I think it's long overdue. I still have issues with some of the nerfs/balances that they do, but thats for another thread. Let them have 5 min of respect before going back to the whine/nerf threads, they've earned it.
2. Why must everyone spell my name with a c... it's spelt with a K dammit

EVE is a cold, harsh world, filled with people that would kill you without a second thought. The forums are even worse. |
