The commentary has been awful so far. They don't know what's going on half the time; they can't see ships on screen or control what they see to commentate on it; and they talk like they're on TS or Vent with their buddies. Also there's constant technical problems. This is your fifth tourny right?
Whose the slob with the dirty teeshirt and curly hair in the 'studio' running the end commentary? You are on TV for crips sake. Comb your hair, shave and put on some slacks and a polo at least! It's bad enough we have to listen to your drivel. Also would it be too much to ask for you to back up your opinions with some sort of game knowlege other than "These guys are n00bs!"? Sit up stright, speak clearly and in complete sentences and at least sound like you know what you're talking about. Consider ditching the blonde sidline commentator who has no clue what's going on.
CCP, hire a professional production crew for God's sake (Get some free interns from the local university)! These guys are representing your company and once again it seems as if everything was simply thrown together in someone's basement.

I think they are mostly ok actually. But one thing I find slightly disturbing is that they seem to not understand some basic things. The most important being they dont realize an entire team can be jammed or more likely damped. Curses, stealth bombers, armor tanked ships, they all fit damps with probably lock range scripts. So while you can get your remote rep cykle going you cant shoot or jam the other team. Time and time again though KIAeddz and Verone seem to not understand this and say things like "There doesent seem to be any damage at all on X team" "No I dont understand what Y team is doing". I can tell you right now what they are doing, trying to get a lock thats what they are doing. Also sometimes they dont seem to notice the health bars and the camera man is waving his pointer franticly trying to make them notice team X's guardian is going into structure while they are saying "nothing at all going on atm".
Other then that its all ok. Verone was probably only tired anfter the journey thats all and looked alot better the second day. Smack is quite evenly distributed so its all fun (not like 2-3 tournaments ago when it was more like BoB-tv then EVE-tv). Though it did **** me a bit when Stavros said "smashkill suck as usual", as if Roadkill had anything to do with Smash setup.

This commentary is loads more cool, professional, and fun than any previous tournament. If you want Spiral ("the slob with the dirty teeshirt and curly hair in the 'studio' running the end commentary") to put on a tuxedo and dance for your entertainment you have the wrong place. The Chippendales are down the street on the left.
I'd also like to comment that the studio looks great, the sound and video stream quality is superb, the playbacks are up quickly, there have been several welcome CCP appearances (Hilmar, Oveur...), and in general I've had a roaring good time watching Tournament #5.

First off, I saw the whole thing from start to end yesterday, there were zero technical problems, sound and video was perfect, yes perfect from start to finish (helps to have 30mb cable and use VLC player).
I found the way they presented themselves to be very appropriate considering the are all indivuals, you sould like someone from a different generation who would frown on someone wearing runners to the office.
Now considering this is a "Video game", I found it quite entertaining and generally good to watch.

This is spot on, the other thing I found disturbing was their lack of drone knowledge on Saturday, what you said about not realising the other team was jammed because of drones or mods and basically not paying attention at times was a bit surprising but yeah overall I think they all did a good job.

Unfortunately, the commentators usually have no idea what is going on in a match. They talk down to teams who lose like they are idiots, yet only once in a while the team actually is terrible; most of the time however their setup just doesn't match up well versus their opponents. I know they can't see what each team is fitting but its usually very obvious as to what each team is doing. There are so many little things the commentators do that just annoy the crap out of me. They act like they have to keep talking and talking and talking when there is nothing to talk about, so they just talk and talk and talk and talk about nothing. They force themselves to find things in a match to talk about and it just makes them look stupid.
I really like the idea of having the local college students volunteer doing the production or at least planning the event. -------------------------- Piwate Bunny Wuv

I do have to say, in almost every match there's a mention of 'oh, the game is pretty this time', and it's getting a little old. It's not a good thing to keep repeating yourself.
This happens with other things aswell, when talking about certain teams for example. It always comes down to some event or trivia that gets repeated 1-2 times in every match they play. Last time this was really obvious in the Ivy League matches...

Whine.
If you don't like it, don't watch it (the big X in the upper right corner). I've enjoyed every minute of the last- and this tournament. If you want professional (and strangely boring) commentaries go watch golf or whatever.
You get something unique to the gaming world, brought to you a ginger bloke and great panel of experts and ofcourse the lovely StevieSG. Do remember they can not see whats directly affecting each pilot, there is no big red glow around the ship being dampened or jammed.
Like i mentioned above, if you don't like it - don't watch it, or mute it and comment it yourself, see how well you can manage, i'm sure your corp mates can have a good laugh or be amazed of how great you are and that you should apply for an expert next time around.
Good job EvETV and CCP, it's been worth the wait.
PS: CCP, fund EvETV, it's what makes this game unique and stand out from craftworld's and other MMO's that can never achieve what EvE has, pure awesomeness.

I disagree with the OP.
I really like the commentators. They make good points, generally have a good idea what is going on, bar the occasional slip-up. And yes, the commentary should be exactly like if you are on TS chatting with your gang mates. It's like watching football with your mates in the pub, and talking about it, vs watching the sterile comment from the tv. Presenters/experts in dirty shirts also increases the image that these are PLAYERS indeed, and not some pretty faces they hired (remember the nice looking girls for the Eve-tv newbie experience? how where they reacted to?).
My only minor comments to the commentators are, is that if a team looses, they conclude it's automatically a bad setup. As mentioned before, it's a rock-paper-scissors thing.

I really don't need to tell you what your available options are, you seem bright enough. Or am I in for a major disappointment?

I'm really enjoying the coverage so far. Remember this is a game and the commentary is being done by gamers - not professionals and we should expect that. If it was'nt for these guys there would be no coverage and no EvE TV and Alasse Cuthalion would'nt have balls the size of planets

Would you rather stare at a "please wait" screen and listen to junkie xl for the n+1:th time between each fight, and have nothing but in-game sound effects during fights? Slacks and polo? It's not a damn golf tournament. I find the commentary very entertaining even though they're not omniscient and sometimes get things wrong. Good job spiral, eddz and others.

Yes I agree and its a shame as much is its nice to see someone happy his own alliance wins a maach it looks amatuerish jumping around the studio when your supposed to be making impartial commentary. Commentators keep jibber jabbering over each other yawn! The theme music sounds like it was grabbed off late night poker and not for a spaceship game.

LIES! I can tell that without even reading your post.
Since internet broadcasts can only transmit video / audio streams and no smell streams, you surely have no idea how they smell in reality, unless you were there.. in which case im sure you did mistake your own stench for theirs.

Edited by: DTee on 03/03/2008 10:51:48 I totally agree your on TV to potentially 1000s of people. Its only professional to dress the part and make yourself look half descent.
It would also help to have a countdown before each match and someway of showing which team is on which side in a match.
They should also consider getting on TS or Eve voice with the team that has just taken part in a match to ge ta real picture of what happened. (I am pretty sure its not THAT hard to grab TS details and then air the audio over evetv.
