Seriously...
They use up tonnes of room (10m3!) and refine into pretty much nothing at all. Getting them from salvage is nothing but an annoyance since you have to jettison them all the time. Seems as though their only purpose is to make fun of you ...
Methinks they should be removed from the game entirely, or use the same volume as normal salvage since they serve no actual purpose whatsoever, and only certain wreck types drop them.

Nothing crushes young dreams so much as to wait patiently for your salvagers to reel in some goods only to find you have a cargohold full of Scrap metal. It's downright depressing.

No, it's more like we're picking through the trash for the goodies as opposed to cleaning the trash away. If I only want the goodies then why do my salvagers pick up the trash anyway? It's not like mining lasers sometimes just shoot out a load of mud into your cargohold.

I think scrap metal parts should be a required part to recieve missions from a cloaked agent, later proving to be an android in service of rogue drones.

Metal Scraps are not salvage, although you do get them from salvaging. They were in the game long before salvaging and rigs were introduced.

Yep and they were useless back then too. I second this motion. Scraps need to either have their volume reduced, minerals gained from refining increased, or just done away with. Is more an annoyance than anything. Getting those messages where you don't have enough cargo space to salvage when you have 50+ m3 open. It's quite annoying.

If thats the case they should throw in other useless loot of a comedic level. 10m3 units of toliets, garbage, the occasional thing of illegal medical waste....

Metal scraps are like the new cap boosters. It's all meant to fill up your cargo and slow you down. On a side note why are combat ships in missions dropping Miner 1s? How is it I can take a serious beating in a mission and when I look at the loot it's civilian shield boosters and standard missile launchers? And no it's not my crappy tank and DPS :p.

Same reason you see killmails where Dreads have civilian shield boosters fitted, seriously NPC's must have noobs too.

I agree. Nerf metal scraps for all of the reasons listed above -- and because they are overpowered as they currently stand!

I assumed that that is exactly what they are for. I strongly do not agree with taking them away even though they are pointless - because Eve is not meant to be all easy and nice. Being attacked: pita, Gatecamps: pita , Metal scraps: pita ,etc. etc. Ok they are pretty trivial in the scheme of things but they fit well with the 'life is not a bed of roses' theme of Eve.

I am all about making EVE hard but not a "feature" where the only "feature" part of it is a time sink. I like to make the competitive things hard, so if you get good at it you have an advantage. No one is winning with metal scraps, not even CCP as all those cans people jettison them into in missions hubs has to cause lag.

This sounded so ridiculous I had to try it. I bought 5000 metal scraps and put them in a hangar with my Tempest BPC and lo and behold, Larkonis is absolutely right. Makes one wonder what other kind of secret build requirements some coder put into the game. Things done for the lulz have benefited Tempest builders on this day.
edit: and this isn't even a joke about the Tempest being a pile of scrapmetal.

Edited by: Shintai on 21/03/2008 13:02:32 There is a stargate in a mission that gives 250 scrap metal or so when you blow it up. Talk about laughing in your face.
Anyway in short I like the idea of Metal Scraps. However it should be changed. Size is an issue for the super small reprocess. Either make them drop maybe 10000 trit on reprocess or so. Or make them very small and increase their droprate alot. Abstraction and Transcendence: Nature, Shintai, and Geometry |

Personally I like Metal Scraps as is. Salvage materials may be very valuable but they are, after all, just junk, garbage, detritous. Your salvagers pull everything of value out of a wreck, just because you rate the value of the metal scraps as lower than the trouble involved in hauling them doesn't negate their inherant value.
The only thing I might agree with is the annoyance value of having salvagers shut off because a dose of metal scraps has used up too much hold space to allow you to continue but I would suggest the solution to that is simply to have any salvage which won't fit in your hold drop in the can when the wreck disappears in the same way as loot does. --

a full cargohold of Metal Scraps would yield you about 2,000-4,000 ISK (depending on the size of your cargo). I wouldn't call that 'valuable' in any way, considering a refineable module such as a large turret uses up only twice as much room and can be worth anything up to 1,000,000 ISK.
I would much rather take home 5mil ISK worth of refineable modules and 5mil ISK of Salvage, than 4,000 ISK of metal scraps. They arn't 'valuable' by any standard.
If however they dropped a much larger quantity of minerals, or used so little room it didn't matter, (or didn't exist at all) it wouldn't be nearly as bad, IMO. ...

of course .But if you are playing 'there and then', there should be no problem. ( inho)
after-all if you dont notice your cargo hold getting full . for no apparent reason . apart from metal scraps you deserve everything that happens.

That would be all well if you could jettison a can at any time you wanted. There's a timer that keeps you from doing that more than once every few minutes, so if you're moving around the place salvaging several wrecks at a time, you'll often find yourself with a cargohold full of scrap metal you can't get rid of fast.
